He's a wonderful old gentleman. The second series has a crew dedicated to following the Schnabels. Awesome.

I was the same with the Hoffman crew. It takes almost the entire series to really remember them. The old man Jack is quite daft. He keeps saying he's the only one who knows about mining, but then spends most of his time just randomly digging holes all over the place wasting fuel. Dorsey with the big Craster beard I actually liked, as he just kept getting beaten down by Todd at every turn. No wonder he's angry all the time.

Ace.

Dorsey seems alright, and certainly the most memorable so far. He wants to get things done and learn instead of shooting blind. But Todd is a right dick. I hated him from the moment he shouted at Dorsey for raising an eyebrow when the cable snapped in the first episode. By the time he shouted at him when Dorsey complained about the kids leaving food around, I just wanted him to fuck right off.

That's exactly the time I turned against Todd too. It wasn't even as if he was shouting at the kid, he was quietly explaining to him why it's a bad idea to leave food lying around. To be shot down like that over alpha-male territoriality... I just get the impression that because he had a more white-collar job of a real estate agent, Todd felt threatened by him.

Exactly. And you could see the kid smirking, too, the little shit. Todd is just an absolute dick. And now he's guilting his sister into lending him more money?

Season 2 is so much better, now they're following the Schnabel and Dakota teams as well. It really shows the Hoffmans for the fucking obliviously dense rookies they really are.

And I'm so glad they failed so hard at the end of season one :D

:DD Same here! I love that the "glory hole" really wasn't a glory hole of any kind. It was just an old man going mad and digging holes at random.

Amazing, isn't it. I laughed so hard when it said they were losing their lease because Dickhead Todd missed a payment, too. It really says everything you need to know about the team. He really reminds me of Ricky from Trailer Park Boys. Yet somehow less competent.

There were several times I had to snort in derision, like a sneering Cyril. Once when one of the wives mewled "God wouldn't have brought us up here for no reason!" when that's exactly what happened. How they kept thanking Jesus for putting gold in the ground, but not when he'd put shit in the water and almost killed their child. In the second series, how they kept bigging each other up with "this is the greatest country in the world" despite being in Canada.

Rumours have it that Todd was actually banned from ever mining again in Anmericar after the authorities saw the amount of shit happening in that series :D

:DD Amazing.

I'm not too far into season 2 yet, but I've just watched them drag the wash plant through a jungle  It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he was banned. What a tool.

And then they're being showed up at every turn by a sixteen-year-old boy, who's showing miles more both knowledge and maturity.

Series three started last week. I hope further ruination occurs. I dread to think of the damage these dicks would do in Guyana digging up virgin jungle like the grubbing bastards they are.

Are you a horror flimum fan? Do you like reading and watching things about horror flimums? Then why not watch Mark Gatiss' Horror Europa on iPlayer? It's dead good. Then try his three part History of Horror, which is even better.

I'd've liked to see a longer section on the Blind Dead trilogy. Was nice to see him give a long segment to The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue, though.

Oh aye I watched that a while ago, some amazing footage and properly stirring driving but also some really rather sad parts. Ford RS200 is my favorite.

Cor. Episode 2 of the new series of Bering Sea Gold is quite, quite astounding. A new crew member called Dave freaks out in a way that I've never seen before. Quite amazing. Hope he's okay :S

About 3:50 on here.

People who like Things may like to watch Prescription Thugs by Josh Alexander. Gives quite an insight into practises of some within Rasslin and Uffuck performers. Former biffer Chris Leben in particular.

Wonderful doc on a brand new channel called *checks notes* Bee Bee Cee (somethings to do with men's genitals I think), aboot climbing Legend Eric Jones and his last climb at age 82. It am called The Last Climb: Eric Jones, surprisingly. Link for idleness: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... eric-jones

There's an excellent Arena up on iPlayer called A British Guide to the End of the World. It's Threads and When The Wind Blows levels of 80s nuclear misery. A fantastic part when a Italian born landlord of a pub in Derbyshire is outfitted with an early warning system that would blink if an incoming missile had been detected so he could warn the village. Except they hadn't given him any klaxons or sirens so it'd mean him riding around on his bicycle shouting "The Russians are coming" and hope that people listened. Great stuff.

New series of that Theroux character started at the weekend. Plus there's good two part Storyville on the Jonestown Massacre.cre.cre.cre.cre.

Will check out both those. Didn't realise Theroux had started either. What's his theme this time around?

I just watched Don't Fuck with Cats on Netflix.

Barely believable story of a group of internet sleuths tracking down a man who, without spoiling too much, films himself killing cats and posting the videos on the internet.

As the above would suggest, there's some distressing imagery in this, but largely described.

Here is the problem I had with Don’t Fuck With Cats.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
It’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. The documentary centred on a group of internet sleuths (and self confessed nerds, as they spent all their time on facebook, which is what it means to me a computer nerd, obviously), who had absolutely no bearing on the case in the slightest, and nothing they did had any effect on whether he was caught or not. The only thing they did was give him more attention.

1. They didn’t know who Luca was until he turned up in their group and told them who he was.
2. They bought everything Luca had setup online as truth, and had supposed lightbulb revelation moments that shocked them how elusive and clever Luca was, whereas to any non-idiot it was blatantly bullshit.
3. Luca was identified as the killer by the evidence he left at the scene. Nothing to do with the facebook group.
4. Luca was caught after his picture was put up on Interpol most wanted, and a shopkeeper recognised him from the news. Again nothing to do with the facebook group.

Ultimately it was a documentary about self serving narcissists who massively inflated their own sense of self importance and relevance… and Luca.

I’ve finished watching the 5 part documentary called “Once Upon a Time in Iraq” about the 2003 invasion. It’s fucking harrowing stuff told by the military, journalists and locals. 10/10

It’s on the iplayer thing.

This is what I thought of it when I watched part 2, but I've watched the whole thing now, and it is indeed harrowing. It also explains why we're now continually infear of Islamic terrorist attacks and it's very much due to what happened in Iraq.

Harrowing, but very much worth watching.

I didn’t think the politics were particularly front and centre in this. It’s more about the personal struggles of those living with the decisions and orders of others. The politics have been explored much more comprehensively in other mediums.

I have not seen this and now I think I have to. What's it called again? And why am I imagining a crazed* Klaus Kinski in the role of Todd?

We are the Champions on Netflix is great! The first episode is about cheese rolling, and it's insane and brilliant.

We watched the first two last night. It is indeed great, and is narrated and executive produced by Dwite Schrute

Considering how awful I find Fairytale Of New York (the song, not the book) I enjoyed the Story of Fairytale of New York, currently on Beep iPlayer.

I was surprised at how productive Shane MacGowan was and also didn't know that he was the only Irish member of the Pogues, or that Kirsty MacColl only got involved with Fairytale because Steve Lillywhite, who was producing the song, suggested her when they had no female singer lined up for that part of the song after Cait O'Riordan left the Pogues.

Maybe the most surprising thing was that Shane wasn't dead, considering his lifestyle.

I started wortchin I'll Be Gone in the Dark hoping for an in depth doc aboot the golden state killer, of which I know very little. Instead what I got was up to episode 3 which have all been aboot the lady investigating it, who is now dead. Apparently she was married to a "comedian" called Oswald Copperpot or something, so we get another 20 minutes talking about him while watching him sign books and do his fucking atrocious stand-up ("I'm gettin' laid all the time so I thought I wouldn't be funny no more!" - show people rolling around vomiting from laughing in some sort of huge stadium/Thunderdome). I gave up when they started talking about how she got along with her Mom. Not worth the time!

We are the Champions on Netflix is great! The first episode is about cheese rolling, and it's insane and brilliant.

Yes! I find it quite uplifting and inspiring. The chili pepper eating one was good too. I look forward to the others.

The documentary I enjoyed recently was the ZZ Top one on Netflix, short and punchy, and some good music in there too - they're better musicians than I realised.

Latest Louis Theroux is excellent. I really can't comprehend the minds of people who like Joe Exotic and want him freed.

Simon & Garfunkel:The Harmony Game

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... rmony-game

It’s billed as The Making Of Bridge Over Troubled Water, but really it’s their musical lives up to and including, and a little beyond the making of that final album. There’s a few clips you’ve likely seen on past documentaries (including my favourite TV clip of all time, when they are discussing parallel fifths, and it’s the most awkward exchange to human beings have ever had), but it’s a great documentary and there’s some sublime music and song and it’s a really great 1.5hrs of filmmaking, even if you’ve already watched ten different So Mon & Garfunkel documentaries in your lifetime.

We’ve been watching a load of the original Fraggle Rock recipes on AppleTV, and Darwin absolutely loves them. They stand up to the test of time admirably. The only negative is that the episodes on AppleTV don’t have our lovely lighthouse keeper, but rather the old American Chappy working in his shed, and he’s a lot more wisecracking and sarcastic.

There are brand new Fraggle Rock episodes due on the same service later this month. You can get five months free if you have a Barclaycard, I believe.
