The Nigel Farage Publicity Machine Brexit Party won't be standing in existing Tory seats. Complicates things somewhat, but might still help prevent a majority if they split the vote in key Tory targets.

I wonder if Mr Johnson has dangled a knighthood or a peerage in front of Nigel Farage.

Contesting every seat would definitely have helped the “anyone but Boris” camp.
This’ll just make it a lot harder for other parties to take seats off the Conservatives.

I am really struggling to summon up any enthusiasm for this election and its probable aftermath.

I really hope that all the parties running candidates here up their game and send canvassers around because I wouldn't want my box of questions to go to waste. I've only had one leaflet so far, from the Lib Dem.

Whilst eating breakfsat I made the mistake of watching this C4 interview with Michael Gove. I'm now genuinely angry at the way he avoids the reporter's questions and instead repeatedly attacks him. This kind of Trumpist shoot-the-messenger thing is really poisoning discourse. And Gove knows exactly what he's doing.

I don't think I can just avoid it all, even though that'd probably be good for me. Would someone lend me some cash so I can go and spend the next month in the Antartic communing with penguins rather than endure another few weeks of this?

The Tories are an absolute fucking disgrace. Say what you want about Corbyn, that he's naive, unelectable, blah de fucking blah, but what he isn't doing is using Putin's playbook for handling the media/public. It's got to the point now where so much lying has been normalised by these shitcunts that nothing can blow up in their face. When I saw Raab actually smirking his way through questioning the other morning over the CCHQ twitter thing I felt actual rage. They have completely fucked everything.

BUT! Northern european names for bear - e.g. "bear", "björn", "bär" - are thought to originate from the words for either "brown" or "wild animal". This is assumed to be an ancient tabboo on actually saying the name of the creature, and therefore summoning it. "Bear" is thus thought to be the earliest known euphemism.

I honestly don't know. Is there no smoke without fire or does it stem from the fact that he has spoken up about Palestinian rights? Is it just a handy stick to beat him with and a similar level of scrutiny applied to any past Labour or other party leader would find a similar level of antisemitism amongst party members that the leader was supposedly turning a blind eye to. From everything he's ever said on various topics I'd find it extremely weird if he believed that everyone deserves a fair go except Jews, he just hates Jews for some reason.

I feel the same. He's definitely handled the issues of antisemitism within his party very badly, but I feel accusations levelled at him personally are generally conflating support for Palestine with antisemitism. Like you say, it's a powerful stick to beat him with, but I'm not convinced it has any truthful merit.

This is a worthwhile read

And, if the fact I read recently is correct, this means that there is no written record of what that original name was, i.e. what it was taboo to say.

As if doctoring Kier Starmer’s interview recording wasn’t bad enough, the Tories have created https://www.labourmanifesto.co.uk/ to attack Labour.

I’m sure they think that’s very clever.

It isn’t.

I have had hayfever fits that lasted hours, but as long as the transition was painless then what’s not to love?

This is a pretty big coup for Labour. They need to keep connecting the NHS to Mr Trump in people's minds for it to be effective. Handily for them, our favourite sitting US president is dropping by next week.

I'm thinking of preparing some prompt sheets to keep by the door in case any canvassers call.

The Tory one will probably consist of a rant about all manner of shit they're responsible for, e.g. everything fucked up by 'austerity' which some economist or other recently said was entirely unnecessary, the ability of the Blonde Buffoon to grin like an idiot all the time, while lying through his teeth, their childish tactics during their current campaign (the Kier Starker interview doctoring, their fact checking website, their labour manifesto web site), their total contempt for most of the electorate, the fact that the best they could do for a leader was the said Blonde Buffoon, the ridiculous strategy of going back to the EU to renogiate a deal again and again like a petulant toddler that's not getting its own way, long after it became clear that the EU are just not going change their position, etc, etc.

Hey, he got them to remove the hated backstop - only to be activated if no other solution could be found - by agreeing to a border in the Irish Sea! Doing something "no PM could ever agree to", as one critic once described it.

Malcolm Gladwell vs Barry Gardiner on bartering over the NHS.

The latter is much more eloquent than I expected, and the former more condescending than I had imagined.

That said, this clip might well follow 5 minutes of Gardiner shouting down Gladwell, as it is with political rapport de jour, so Gladders might be feeling all huffy and flustered, like.

Alan Renwick of the Constitution Unit at that godless place on Gower Street has written a few ideas on Twitter about possible solutions to the Conservatives' current un-conservative attack on institutions.

It starts here:

It'd be brilliant if he does lose his seat. Not only for the schadenfreude, but because people might start listening to us constitutional nerds saying that it doesn't technically affect his position as prime minister.
