I've used project X cloud as I've had an invite into the Beta and it's brilliant. I don't get how it works, but I can play Sea of Thieves on my phone where ever I want with no lag so it's great!

In the previous video they're directly comparing XCloud with Stadia, and it doesn't look good for Stadia.

Not just in terms of game selection, and the fact you don't have to actually BUY EVERY SINGLE GAME AT A MASSIVELY INFLATED PRICE.

But also how it runs on a variety of hardware, and how sensitive it is to available bandwidth.

Also XCloud seems to do a much better job of coping with bandwidth fluctuations, where Stadia outright just stutters or drops frames or simply stops for half a second or so, XCloud dynamically reduces resolution to, y'know, actually keep the game running.

I'm back to where I was on Page 1 of this thread, unless Stadia evolves into something much better, very fucking quickly, it's dead.

Prepare a plot in the Google Graveyard.

As I understand it, the problem is the lag on Stadia (and cloud services in general, potentially, but Stadia seems to really suffer from it), is the inconsistency of the latency.

If the lag is consistent then (a) The developers can code to account for it and (b) The player very quickly gets used to it and factors it in.

The problems start when the lag is inconsistent, occurring at any time and for a random period, at which point the feel of the game is ruined and it starts to become a major issue for playing the game.

I've heard the word 'unplayable' used to describe Stadia in all but the best case scenarios, (and even then it's not a slam dunk).

No, the other way around. Make everything else go SO fast it cancels out the lag.

If you process the input 50ms before it occurs then it’ll appear as if there isn’t any

If you can predict correctly 50ms before, then it's fine.

I think this is a bad idea.

I'm reading it and I'm not tired of it. Also, I assume from the capitalisation there that you're attempting to use terms from that stupid Wiki site no one cares about which just makes you look like a tit. Stadia is awful, no one likes it or cares about it, stop white knighting it for no reason.

To put add a little more context:

PS4 has over 100 million sold [released Nov 13]
Xbox has 50 million sold [released Nov 13]
There’s a LOT of PC’s out there

Stadia was released just over a week ago and I don’t believe there’s any sales figures released yet.

Yes I know, the point is this thing needs to reach some sort of critical mass, and it needs to do it quickly. By all accounts the multiplayer aspects of a lot of games on Stadia just aren't working because there simply aren't enough people on the service.

Everyone who's got Stadia has got Destiny 2, everyone who's got it is super keen and shelled out top dollar for the Founder's Edition, you'd expect them to be online and using it, if there are fewer than 20,000 people online playing Destiny 2 worldwide, those aren't good numbers.

To my mind Stadia either needs to grow quickly, or it's going to shrink quickly, but with XCloud looming and looking, y'know, a fuckton better, I'm not sure I fancy Stadia's chances.

Ultimately, it's doing hardly anything that Google said it would, it's just another OnLive, and we know what happened to that.

So Borderlands 3 is now out on Stadia, running on an October patch (so missing loads of content and fixes) and locked at 30FPS.

All hail the power of the future!

Wolfenstein Youngblood on Stadia.

TL:DR version, compared to XB1X version.

Graphics settings - Match
Resolution - Stadia Lose
Framerate - Both versions fail to solidly hold 60FPS, however XB1X offers a performance mode that dynamically drops resolution in favour of performance, Stadia doesn't have this option so you just get framerate drops
Input latency - Stadia Bad Lose (Gameplay affecting) <<<< CRITICAL
Image compression - One of the better Stadia efforts but still visible
Price - Stadia Lose
Configuration options - Stadia Lose (XB1X offers 'quality' and 'performance' modes, this is absent on Stadia)

Test kit, very low latency OLED TV, 300 meg fibre.

Remember that on paper the Stadia 'server' has a fair bit more power than an XB1X.

I'm not sad I didn't get Stadia for Christmas.

I'm posting about Stadia, in the Stadia thread, I'm interested in the tech and the way it's consistently falling short of what was promised (sometimes way short) is fascinating to see, and I know not everyone will spend the time watching the (excellent) Digital Foundry videos, hence me taking the time to write a short synopsis.

Plus I called TWD correctly earlier than most, IMO.

It's just a day. Plus I'm on 24/7 on call for work this week which means NO BEER and my phone can ring at any time of day or night and I'll have to remote in or attend one of our sites, which does't feel massively Christmassy.

Anyway Christmas is for children, not adults, Jnr has got her SIX MILLION PRESENTS and seems very happy with them.

Called what? Called it shit? It wasn’t shit when you were hating on it ... but, yes, it did get very shit thereafter. Very shit. Mind you, I still haven’t watched the last season. Maybe that’s something this Grinch could do over the next couple of weeks.
