And I thought the ending of Roseanne was bizarre.

I couldn’t remember this at all. I think I’d be about 19, I guess, at the time, and I only vaguely remember Rosanne turning the lights off in the house. But looking it up it sounds heartbreaking ... and weird, like who let them get away with doing that and was it was planned that way through the final season? Sounds brilliant though.

It was not brilliant, it was weird as fuck - and completely ignored when the show started up again last year (for obvious reasons).

I’d read that in the final season all this nonsense below happens though, so it kinda sounds like a fantastic modern twist to explain the bullshit that had been happening in the final season. Man, I wish I’d watched Rosanne meeting Steven Seagal. For some reason.

-Roseanne imagines herself in That Girl, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
-Roseanne goes all AW HELL NO on The Jerry Springer Show.
-Roseanne and Jackie modeled for Playboy.
-Roseanne entered a beauty pageant.
-Jackie goes on a date with a prince played by Jim Varney.
-Darlene gives birth to Satan.
-Roseanne fights women-hating terrorists on a train, meets Steven Seagal.
-Roseanne dreams that she’s in Evita.
-Jackie wrestles Dot Marie Jones
-Dan’s mom keeps trying to kill her son.

EDIT: The episode where Roseanne meets Steven Seagal is called “Roseambo” and sounds fucking mental: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/toughguy ... 13337/amp/

I got a 5 on the first of those and a 3 on the second, I actually got quite a few threes today.

Semi relatedly I also got three of the four broken kareoke rounds, in house of games. messing up the 2nd one and kicking myself for it.

It's very strange seeing a close friend on the TV. Kinda surreal really.

'His Dark Materials'.
Enjoyed the first episode and although the monkey wasn't scary enough I think enough has been set up for an excellent series. The actress playing Lyra is ace.

Fun to see New College stand in for most of Exeter too, if you like picking up on that sort of thing.

I gave up half way through this week’s Giri/Haji because of an absence of recognisable plot.

Checking my notes, I see that I thought "not a lot happened" and "these children can't act" so I DISAGREE, SIR.

I can picture you playing the Greg Davis role in a 'Taskmaster' knock-off.

I saw it as a mostly world-building episode, but as for not much happening, I wonder how much made sense if you know the books or not. Admittedly I didn't feel much threat from the golden monkey (one of the most nightmarish creations in literary history) or the child-knapping but those were minor faults.

As someone who has sat through The Golden Compass more than once, it all feels very familiar, like they're just making that film into a series. I know they're heavily restricted by the described technology and time period, but damn, throw a few changes in

I read the books years ago so I remember bits of the plot, but I never found the books all that engaging, certainly not enough to re-read them. I think this was partially because I often found the plot confusing.

I really liked the movie they made and thought they should have made the others.

Will definitely watch this. That said, I thought the third book mostly got a bit annoying and/or confusing.

As long as they do one book per series, there are years before they fuck up the ending.

Looks like Taskmaster is involved in a bidding war between UKTVPlay, Channel 4 and BBC (yes UKTV is owned by them too etc) like a Bakeoff contest. Luckily horrible N*el Fi**din* has already shat it up once so hopefully he won't be on again bullying people to attempt suicide and telling everybody what he's wearing if it's not commented on.

BBC 4: Rich Hall's Red Menace

Enjoyable fast-paced rant about the cold war era, with excellent use of archival footage. I can never tire of cold war/atomic era chic. The highlight is the segment on "Doctor Zhivago".

Ah, I almost watched that the other night, but ended up watching a documentary on Johnston & Gill Sans typefaces :D

Also, I want to call them fonts because they are so widely known as fonts, but every single program I have ever watched always starts with some snug ‘I know more than you*’ bit where they tell you that you are wrong, because the font is the size and weight, which many people know but aren’t tedious dicks about. So, anyway, that was good. Quite shocking in places (incest... and someone having sex with a pet dog...) but aside from that very interesting.

*Also, the presenter keeps on telling me that I never notice or do not recognise things, which is pretty condescending because I do. I’m pretty sure a fair section of people watching documentaries on typefaces might.

No Idea, who presented that, but I'm going to play guess the presenter based on Mimi's description.

I have opted for Giles Coren.

I just looked it up and I was wrong, but I've never heard of the person who presents it, so I'm okay with that guess.

Typeface is clearly correct because a font is for washing a baby's head in church or a source of a lot of knowledge.
