I used to dislike Mariah like all people everywhere (whilst still thinking its one of the top three Christmas tunes ever) but I watched her in the film Precious and found a new found respect for her. She had a moustache. I like that she had a moustache. It helped me see past the Mariah-ness.

Also, that’s a great film. It’s difficult to watch, but brilliant. The main actress puts in such a heart-wrenching performance that it stuck with me for ages.

Ooh yes, I liked that video - a nice counterpoint to the usual "Christmas, but it's only November!" (again. Every year. Must we?) For those who don't mind, or don't care, it was quite nice to just see it outright acknowledged that yes, it's November, and from here on, you're going to hear Mariah (and Slade and Cliff and The Pogues and oh gosh).

I've just had my first ever business enquiry through Linkedin!

It hasn't turned to anything yet, but after being on there for a good number of years. This is quite something. Maybe they were right and it IS the future of business networking?

Or why the makers of that 4head treatment for headaches don't make a treatment for eczema.

I am absolutely, 100% ready for festivities to happen around me this year. I have never wanted Christmas so much as I want it this year. I am sitting here slowly sewing a Christmas decoration. I have – get this – invited my in-laws.

I have eaten a mince pie today. I’d like to say it was my first of the season, but in fact it is my fifth. I have bought new Christmas lights. I’m really looking forwards to it.

someone I've never heard of from a department I didn't know we had sent an email to the entire company address book today being all excited about linked in and how we should all make sure to list or company allegiance correctly on it to help increase brand awareness and business.

This did not make me rush to create a linked in account.

:luv: I'm feeling pretty festive too! I don't normally let myself get carried away until after Isabel's birthday though (14th) but I have had a couple of mince pies :D

Last night, we had a family baking evening and MrsPaz put Michael Buble's Christmas album on. It was pretty nice.

My mental image was of them baking a Buble CD and them eating it.

My baking consisted of melting a load of easter chocolate and remoulding it as 'cakes' with crushed up candy cane sprinkled on top. Gourmet!

My mental image was of them baking the Evanses from number 132 in a big fuck off pie. The music was a jarring counterpoint to the violence, a la Happy and Umbrella Academy etc etc.

'Candy cane' to me means those hard candy teeth-rotting horrible things, so adding that to chocolate would just utterly ruin it surely? Although, the kind of candy I'm thinking of would be slightly too sticky to crush properly so maybe we're talking about something else.

To be fair to them it was a spoof of a US ad that was a sofa company assuring people they had sofas for both black and white people

Oh, was it? Every reference I saw to it online suggested it was from a four years ago and completely ‘legit’ (which I guess it is, but with no mention to the source material it was spoofing).

There are local cable companies in America where you can pay to get your own ad played in your area. This is basically trying to recreate that, there’s usually very little budget involved and it’s just the owner of the shop showing various items for sale with some odd catch phrase. Rhett and Link, the guys that created the Red House ad and sang the jingle, produced a load of these for small companies across America, for free, using the employees and basically aimed to make it as awkward as possible.

The heat from the melted chocolate softened the candy cane quite nicely and it didn't reharden. 9/10 would rot teeth again.

Omg, HOW EXPENSIVE are pantomimes? Why did I expect them to be moderately affordable? An afternoon showing on an early December showing, cheapest ticket is £24.50?!

I’ve never seen one and I thought it might be fun for Darwin, but that’s so expensive (and that’s before all the additional ticket nonsense like Grim has just put up).

Yes, the big ones can be pricey, especially when you factor in the total cost for the family. Maybe a local amateur group is running one either in December or in January? You won't get as much spectacle and over-the-top tech effects as in a large theatre, but the style, humour, and atmosphere can be the same, albeit in a dingy village hall rather than a theatre.

Yep, there are loads of amateur ones all round the country. Quality is variable but always cheap as chips.

I never saw a "big name" panto as a kid (or since, come to think of it), just the local amateur dramatic group at the community centre, sometimes with my mate's dad in a lead role. I loved them. The atmosphere was that of a small town coming together for a bit of fun.

I had a look for that and the only ‘local’ one is in a town hall miles and miles from here and only works out to £10 cheaper. I guess there’s not much am dram here. Classy as ever the only other local JBR is a ‘blue’, strictly over 18s Dick Whittington.

For some reason I just weirdly assumed it would be family-affordable (not that I have a huge family, but even for just our little family it’s too pricey).

Been to the panto at the Hammersmith Lyric for the last few years and it is properly excellent. Top notch production, good music, magical, a bit political, very much proud of London's community. I've never actually paid as it's been a work jolly, but would imagine it's not terribly cheap.

But if you do have to fork out for panto, I'd say it's one worth forking out for.
