I came very close to completng this on the amiga. I could do the entire game in one life... Except the boss of level 5, which I never figured out how to kill even once.

Finally bested it on the switch having learned in the intervening years that you can shoot said bosses feet to stop them squishing you. Got caught out by a few changes from original, But young me would've been chuffed.

I finished Doom 2 on the Switch the other day. It was quite hard in the end but still a great game.

If you'd asked 16 year old me which was better... Doom or doom 2, he'd have said doom 2.

Unfortunately, 16 year old me was a cretin and wrong. Doom had by far the better level design and balancing.

You think? I've played them both back to back now and I prefer Doom 2. I thought the levels were better and having more enemies helped. Doom 2 was more of a challenge than 1.

75. Typoman: something I'd played before on Steam ages ago but picked up again on Android recently. Looking at my original comments they still stand so here's a copy and paste: an interesting platformer who's main USP is it's word-based world. Bits of the landscape, the hero, the monsters and the puzzles are all made up of, and involve manipulating, words. So, say, you've got a gate blocking the way; you make the word RAISE to work past it. That's a very trivial example and there's much more going on but you get the gist. There are some sections made more frustrating than they need to be due to finicky controls (both in terms of controlling your character and in manipulating the letters) but nothing that takes away the overall fun of the thing. The end does bring an overall feeling that more could've been done with the concept and it slightly outstays it's welcome but it's still recommended.

Yeah D2 starts off well, but then at about map 12, the levels start getting a little rubbish, and then theres some right dross at the end. The barrels map (23, I think), then the chasm (24? The one with the really thin walkways. Not fun. at all.)I don't really remember the levels after that until the penultimate one, which ok, and the last one, which is a bit shit.

I do agree on the thin walk ways map... That was a right pain to do but I enjoyed the barrels one.

blind chance. basically a 1/4*1/3*1/2 chance of solving it with each attempt. so a 1 in 24 chance
it's worth noting we did this twice.

Imagine Trackmania, but in a sci-fi horror setting with a thumping industrial soundtrack and unsettling reality shifts, with both Oculus and SteamVR support.

Adventure mode is pretty short (I finished it in a couple of hours), but there are two more campaigns and arcade and multiplayer modes too. This was one of the games included in last month's Humble Monthly, so anyone who subs to that should really try it out!

It might actually be more “Mirror’s Edge in cars” than Trackmania actually.

An art game, about being a blind girl chasing a cats arse.
It is very, very pretty. However, being blind is apparently mainly about the following two things: Incredibly janky collision detection and amazing amnesia whenever it rains.

76. Yoku's Island Express: a Metroidvania by way of pinball, bizarrely enough. So it's got the classic setup of a map that needs opening up in order to complete quests but certain parts are gated off behind abilities you earn from doing other stuff. Although you can move your character left and right on platforms at will there's no jump function and vertical movement is managed by hitting pinball flippers. Aside from general navigation you'll also end up in certain sections that more closely resemble actual mini-pinball tables with multiple levels and flippers and stuff that needs to be hit to progress. It's a unique idea and certainly well implemented--with the occasional annoyance when the inertia from the pinball physics makes general movement and platforming sticky--but it feels like the game's just beginning to open up when it abruptly ends. I'm all for short games so it's not a problem or length, more the pacing. Also, you finish the game with umpteen outstanding optional things to do but there's no real incentive to do them with the over-arching 'story' all tidied up. These are fairly minor complaints though and overall I thoroughly enjoyed my time in it's pretty and cutesy world to the extent that I'd definitely pick up a sequel if one was to surface.

From the massive nonsense that is the title, it sounds like a JRPG because it is a JRPG! I can only manage one or two of these in a year but when I’m playing I’m fully invested and really enjoy my time in the world. This felt very familiar to other JPRGs I’ve played. I’m becoming quite the pro at them too - the key is, grinding and levelling up early and frequently. Stay ahead of the imaginary level cap for this one and you’ll have a breeze. Mind you, it’s not the hardest JRPG I’ve ever played. It was fun though and has the most fabulously camp character in any game ever. When the world ends and dark prevails this fucking guy forms a troupe of equally camp fan boys and goes marching around the map. Celebrate with me:

This guy

77. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker: I loved the idea of this game, and the small bit of it I plated at myp's, but it turns out that it gets really, really fucking boring over the course of an entire game. By the end I was just playing through the levels out of some sense of duty and not because I was massively enjoying it. This might partially be due to it not being as well suited to the smaller screen because no matter what zoom level you pick most of the levels still involve a sense of fighting against the camera to try and see what was going on. Also, the way you didn't get to know what the extra objective was until you'd finished the level once was teeth grindingly stupid as it pretty much forced you to play each level twice even when you could've got a nice, satisfying clean sleep in one go if you knew what you were doing going in. A shame, and not a great start to my Switch career all in.

That’s a shame, it certainly didn’t outstay its welcome that much for me. Although saying that once I’d completed all three chapters I had no inclination to do the bonus chapter or get any DLC, so it definitely had somewhat of a shelf life.

I don’t want to talk about it. Broken, buggy, looter shooter mess crammed in for fucks knows why, forgettable and inconsequential survival mechanics crammed in too, and the removal of AI team mates for fucks knows why. Christ, it’s just a real shit show and the worse big release title I’ve ever played. I don’t really want to talk about it because it’s that bad and cost me actual real life money. Fundamentally the same as Wildlands but shitter. There’s fun to be had clearing bases with your mates but you’d be better off playing Wildlands again as you’ll get the same experience for a fraction of the price.

1/10

I doubt it. CoD next won’t take long but then I’m going to do that Xenoblade 2 DLC which might be a bit lengthy. I’ve done a fair few long games this year.

78. Untitled Goose Game: beautiful, funny, silly and just the right length. I mention that last thing because I've seen some moaning that it's too short but I feel that anything more than what it gave you would've stretched the concept too far. What's there is very well done and right up my alley of environmental puzzling but a sort of repetition was setting in by the very end of it. If I had complaints they would be that (a) the physics of the thing meant that some of the puzzles were challenging more in the execution than the analysis which is never ideal and (b) the final charge through the village was just a scrappy running tug-of-war that I don't feel was satisfying or in-keeping with the rest of the game. I'll go back and do some of the extra stuff that unlocks but definitely not all of it because fuck the timing challenges!

78. Untitled Goose Game
79. Faraway: Tropic Escape: another Faraway game; another slice of mobile gaming awesomeness. I'll just copy my own comments about the previous game as I feel the same about this one: "the fifth instalment in a puzzley escape type game for Android with a lovely tactile control scheme and nice low-poly art style. It's not the hardest game in the world, but each level uses a new type of puzzle so the variety keeps it interesting. Also, the 'key' to the final door for each level is in itself a clue for an optional, and much harder, puzzle and that aspect is what really grabbed me this time around. I've really, really enjoyed this series so far and this recent one is no exception; proper brilliant commute fodder and just what I want out of a mobile game." The only thing I'll add is that I think they did slightly ramp up the puzzle difficulty this time in the later levels, and certainly some of the optional harder puzzles were definitely more difficult, which was welcome.

The credits were rolling while I was typing the message so it looked like it was all done. It did seem a rather short game though so yeah, another episode makes sense.

Super Mario Kart (SNES) shows you the credits after every GP at a particular engine size. 1992.

Which is a perfectly cromulent way of completing the game.

He is a most incorrigible man.

I must be the worlds best JRPG player now cause I stomped all over this. It’s more of the same as the main game but much much tighter and takes place over just 2 titans and has a more focused story that’s supposed to take over 20/25+ hours (but I smashed at 16.5 hours) (I was levelling up like a freaking boss).

The story fills in some back story for the main game but also has some dubious bits: If Jin is so pure and nice in the DLC then why would he ever stab a boy to death in the main game? He wouldn’t. And how did Malos came back? And why is Lora’s death shown off screen? And how come that boy survived a giant laser blowing up a city?

Ahh, who cares because when the fighting is going on it’s all particles, people shouting out their moves over the top of each other, giant QTE’s over the action, constantly watching health bars and shit. And it’s during this chaos that XC2TGC is great.

I was quite absorbed by this, so imma give it, 9/10. It’s great DLC and you can’t say that too often these days.

81. Doors and Rooms 3: decent Escape Room game with logical puzzles throughout. Does have a mildly annoying approach to it's monetisation though. The game's free but requires 'energy' to start each level. In each level there are also certain objects with which you'll lose health if you tap on something without having prepped it properly first (e.g. an electrified surface that requires to have the power cut). These generally aren't obvious so you'll always take a couple of hits on each level just by doing the required tapping around, and if you take four hits you 'die' and need to expend more energy to continue. You never come close to running out given how quickly it refreshes so it just becomes an irritant that the minute-to-minute gameplay has these weird pseudo barriers intended to funnel you towards the 'buy' screen. Easily ignored but stupid nonetheless.

81. Doors and Rooms 3
82. Escape Funky Island: another escape game from Snapbreak who do the Faraway series, which is one of my favourite set of mobile games. So I've basically just grabbed this on the strength of their name, which was a slight mistake because it's really easy stuff and almost certainly meant for a younger audience. That said, it was only a couple of quid and it still very well put together, as you'd expect, and fun so fuck it.
83. Superliminal: head-fucking puzzle game that spend it's run time making you play around with perspective. So, for instance, you pick up a normal sized chess piece then turn and hold it up in front of a far wall and let go. The game then interprets the dimensions of the object as if it was a big thing far away rather than a small thing up close. Boom; you've suddenly got a chess piece that's about ten foot high and can be used to climb on. In fact, just look at the gif I've linked below. It escalates from there of course and adds in other perspective related stuff but that's the core of its Portal style puzzling and plot. If I'm honest it wasn't quite as good as I was hoping for but it's only a few hours long and doesn't outstay it's welcome. Recommended, but maybe not as highly recommended as all the reviews are saying. Certainly though if you see it for cheap grab that shit (it's only about £17 right now) because it's short run time and unique concept make it well worth smashing through of an evening.

42) Minit (Xbox)

You’ve got one minute (geddit) for each run and then you die and it starts again. It’s a very simple game of “get A and take it to B hit C” at its heart. It’s not challenging and you’ll probably smash through it but it does have one daft puzzle I had to look up (it’s the hotel bit when you have to find all the people). It took me about an hour to finish it and it was pretty enjoyable if somewhat disposable.

84. Donut County: very short (I finished the entire thing during a flight to Tenerife) but by God it's fun; and stupidly satisfying. There's just something that scratches an itch deep in your brain when you start off with a lovingly designed level full of stuff, then you end with it utterly bare because you've thrown everything in a hole. The one single and slight downside is that you can't skip the huge amount of dialogue that appears between--and sometimes during--each level, because it just gets in the way of the glorious practise of throwing everything into a hole of ever-increasing radius. That's a minor quibble because it's just great fun. Indeed, I played it once on the flight out and again on the way back and still loved every minute of it. Also, for people with usually non-gamer partners: I showed it to Mrs B and she practically snatched my hand off to give it a go. In fact the only poolside action the Switch got was her with this and she loved it. So, yknow.

Well, I beat the final boss and saw the credits, at any rate. Still plenty to actually do there. Qute fun when a good set of cards is assembled.

(For those interested, I won playing as the defect, having played with him 7 times in total. Also played unsuccessfully as the silent 9 times and the iron clad 7 times, clearing a total of 31 bosses, 696 normal enemies and 785 floors. And by "those" I mean "Mr Chonks" who has yet to clear it, despite appearing to play it more than I did)

43) Death Stranding (PS4)

Outstanding. Loved every minute of it. It’s a bit long at 42 hours but delivering parcels, building roads, helping your fellow porters and loading up and setting out on a lengthy adventure is surprisingly addictive in this gorgeous world. The gameplay is, as it should be, the best bit about this game and not the “Kojima-ness” fucking it right up with his daft annoying dialogue and his other twattish crap. 9/10

Hang on, you can’t skip the credits. 8/10.
