MAME would be an easy option and if you want, I'm pretty sure I can pack together a beat em up selection for you.

Thanks for the offer, though I really just need one decent one for the moment to see if she's into it. I did consider MAME but what's the deal with control pads there? I assumed setting them up would be a pain?

I loved loved loved the recent(ish) Double Dragon remake (Double Dragon Neon). TheVision did not though, IIRC.

£7 on Steam, which I would call "cheap" rather than "very cheap", but YMMV.

You are correct. It just didn't click with me for some reason. Maybe I should revisit it? I believe it's backwards compatible.

It's not that bad. Once you load the game you want (and providing the control pad is plugged in) it's just a matter of going into the menu and mapping the controls. You'll only have to do this once too.

Fair enough, I'll give it a shot. I've now got a copy of MAME and the Final Fight ROM downloaded and it works fine with the default keyboard controls so I'll try mapping the controllers later on. Cheers dude. If she's into it then I'll maybe take a look at something newer like DD Neon.

Plus a bonus of a working copy of Tiger Heli which Mrs B apparently adored playing when she was a kid so that'll be a nice surprise for her.

I tried playing DD Neon but, by god, was it terribly slooooow. The movement and fighting was just painful. I gave up on it.

The problem with a lot of arcade side-scrolling beat-em-ups is that they get very unfair quite quickly just take the fun out of it as you end up pumping credit after credit in. If she does like the genre, something like Knights of the Round might be worth a look as a bit of skill can get you a long way through the game on one credit.

There's the Target: Renegade-em-up 'Eight Dragons', might be worth a shot.

That's why playing the arcade version is perfect though because you can absolutely just keep pumping credits in.

The Punisher arcade game is another great place to start.

I had loads of fun with that on one of the Capcom Classics Collection back in the PS2 day.

If I could be arsed to fart around with MAME I’d bloody love to play The Punisher too. I think I played that at an arcade in my yoof a grand total of once.

The Punisher and The Simpsons were the only arcade games I could complete in 1-2 credits in me yuth. Last time I went to Skegness one of the arcades there had half its floor stacked with old broken machines from the 90s, with a full sit down four player massive Simpsons cab. I wish I had the room for that.

Finishing the Simpsons in a couple of credits is very impressive! I recently did it with 3 friends and it would have took us loads of cash if it wasn't on free play.

Outrun 2 is easy to do every time.
Other than that, Robocop, Punisher, Prehistoric Isle, Aliens, Roadblasters, Double Dragon 2, time soldiers, and probably a couple of others were one or two credit machines.

Depending on difficulty settings, I could play Gauntlet pretty much indefinitely.

In London for the Proms. Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique tonight. Composed to express his love for an actress he'd been stalking. Naturally, it's about obsession.

Noddy was like a plague around here, Meems. My Ma says that Slade played the teeny tiny little club that used to be in my home village so often it was fortnightly occurrence.
