I get it. In 2019, this should not be an issue.

It is just a database with game front end.

Moving accounts from. Server to server is trivial

Yes. This.

Historically it's caused serious issues for the playerbase when servers have dropped below the minimum viable population.

When this happens Blizzard offer free realm transfers for the remaining players on that server, and generally give the option of two or three other servers that are similar to the server that's being shut down in terms of economy size, player progression through PVE and PVP content, and that sort of thing.

Even then it's really quite disruptive to the playerbase that's being moved, and for the playerbase on the server that's being moved to.

For example all it takes is one really wealthy clan to move en masse to a different server, and they could unbalance an entire established economy. Similarly, a hardcore PVP guild arriving on a server with a less skilled playerbase, could see its entire PVP scene thrown into disarray, and this stuff really matters to the players.

It's a relatively trivial task for Blizzard to spin up as many Classic servers as they want to, they've explicitly stated they won't go overboard because 3-6 months down the line they'll be pissing off a lot of people if they need to start closing underpopulated servers down and forcing everyone to move to different servers. I mean, people literally get very attached just to the server they're on, and they don't want to move to another server. This stuff matters to WoW players.

Sorry Kovacs, but when it comes to WoW, (as a game, not the infrastructure it runs on), you're short on facts here.

So you are saying the users will accept 1-2 hour wait to play a game rather than be moved later??

And in the 2019 version of the game it isn't an issue.
This is the 2004 version they are hosting.

Yes, that's exactly what many of them are doing, as evidenced by the queues. (i.e. Mrs Hearthly, she logs in and joins a queue a couple of hours before she'll want to play, she never got the chance to play Vanilla WoW back in the day and she's really been looking forward to it.)

Others, such as myself and Jnr are just going to wait until it settles down a bit, which I figure will be less than a month.

:this:

As I've already pointed out, in more than one post, and explained why in some detail.

Also, the video I've linked and referred to several times, explains in great detail the challenges they faced in getting the thing running at all.

I'm not sure if Kovacs is just being deliberately obtuse at this point.

Quote:
Over the years they've added all sorts of stuff like per-area instancing, cross-realm grouping, dynamic spawns and so on, but none of that exists in WoW Classic, the only concession they've made in that regard is what they're calling 'layering' for the most contested early starter zones, and even there their stated goal is to turn it off ASAP.

The game worlds aren't the same. Jonny plays on server 1, and he has looted a codpiece of manliness. On his server it is worth 500 gold. On server 2 it is worth 100 gold. On server 3 it is worth 1000 gold.

You're now shutting down server 1 because you went for front loading the infrastructure and now want to downsize. Where do you move Jonny?

Move him to server 2, he's pissed off because his expensive codpiece is worth 1/5 of what it was.

Move him to server 3, everyone on there is pissed off because these newcomers have good gear that was way cheaper than they could get.

Now make this decision with 1000 different factors at play and 100,000 people affected.

Maybe if enough of us keep making exactly the same points with slightly different words in a slightly different order, one of us will finally manage to explain the scenario in an understandable fashion.

I understand it. Just think it is mental that you would want to wait 2 hours in 2019 for a game to be playable.

Yet is the users think it acceptable and are willing to pay for it.

Who am I to suggest it is wrong.

Gahhh.

1) I've already explained that WoW Classic is a FREE addition to the account of anyone who has an active WoW subscription with no upfront cost.

2) We're talking about your constant insistence that it's 'just a database with a frontend' and the queue issue can be magiced away with 'more of some things', without any appreciation of what the game is and how it works.

That is ok. 2 hour wait because it is free. I am so sorry now that is acceptable.

I have played it and understand how it works. It is not rocket science

I don’t get why I am the only one that thinks a 77 min wait is unacceptable.

I dont get why you don't get that nobody (apart from hearthly, a bit) is saying it is acceptable, just that it isn't easily fixable by throwing servers at it.

That is exactly how it is fixable.. set up more worlds... reduces wait time..

Yes there would be housekeeping after. If that is a deal breaker then, ok

I am not trolling. I am being told there is nothing to do to reduce wait times. Which is not true.

Grim gets it, and has said spin up more servers.

I don't play and it does not bother me. If i wanted to play 2 hours waiting would be a deal breaker for me..

You do get that a new world is a new world, right? You start from zero, you can't bring a character from another world across, you can't play with any of your friends/clan from a different world, and WoW is a multiplayer social game (especially the classic version!).

Imagine going to a pub where all your friends are inside, but you can't go in as it is full. Just go in the pub across the street and drink by yourself, easy fix.

It's looking good, we're getting there...

That is exactly how it is fixable.. set up more worlds... reduces wait time..

Yes there would be housekeeping after. If that is a deal breaker then, ok

I am being told there is nothing to do to reduce wait times. Which is not true.

Grim gets it, and has said spin up more servers.

Ah. Shit.

Ha ha

Team Hearthly, having smashed up Coldridge Valley like a right bunch of badasses, indulging in a well-earned sit down in Anvilmar.

Note my immense riches of TWENTY COPPER.

I just about managed to scrape together the one silver required to train the ability 'Rend', hence I'm fucking broke now.

I'm the stylish gnome with the awesome pink beard. Jnr is the mage called Abegaile and Mrs Hearthly is the priest with the silly name.

Mrs Hearthly is consumed.

She's also levelling a character solo, 'I'll just finish this quest and then I'll get something to eat'.

30 minutes later....

'I'll just finish this quest and then I'll get something to eat.'

A few minutes later....

'Oooohhh someone's left all these dead beasts on the ground, I'll just skin them and then I'll get something to eat.'

etc.

Still, she always was well into videogames, our friendship was forged back in 1993 when my girlfriend of the time was cheating on me, and me and (the future) Mrs Hearthly would stay up until the small hours of the morning playing Streets of Rage on my Megadrive in our shit student house.
