Graphics: Awesome. Easily as good as, say, Resi 2 remake. The characters and the baddies look fantastic. There’s tons of particles flying all over the shop, smashing barrels and objects has tons of stuff splinter and crumble and reminded me of that one room in Bloodborne with all the pots. The only downside is that the environments aren’t that varied. What’s there is great an’ all (and some are ridiculously beautiful) but you can only have so many vein like catwalks before they get a bit tired.

Sound: Great voiceovers and voice talent. The dialogue is stupid as shit; as is par for the course with these games. Sound effects are suitably meaty and the music is that sort of thrash metal garbage that this series loves.

Story: Some anime bullshit about a guy who raises a big plant to eat the fruit.

Gameplay: It’s DmC 3 & 4 - but together! And better! But with a new bloke! If you’ve enjoyed any of this series you know what you’re getting and it doesn’t disappoint. Lots of combat focused, finger crippling, button dancing, stick twirling nonsense that has you compete against yourself to beat up monster while trying to be as cool as possible and ascertain that triple-S rank so you can end a level and casually say ‘I fucked those guys up’ while throwing a can of Mountain Dew into a bin 10 feet away without looking. In real life.

Conclude: It’s DmC 5. Exactly what you’d want and expect with a sprinkling of some fine AF graphics. There’s one problem though: it’s a bit easy on default and made easier by a continue system of gold orbs you collect in game. If you die anywhere in game you can continue by using a gold orb and it gives you full health. You get gold orbs in-game hidden about the game and, weirdly, for logging in each day. The ones in game are hidden but often not very well. Basically you can accumulate loads of them. So whereas in previous games if you failed a mission you had to restart from the very start now you just get straight back up. It’s fair I suppose but reduces the challenge by some margin. I think they should have been reduced to a single use in each mission. But now you can just strong arm yourself through a difficult boss without any challenge. I don’t like this...I like my DmC like I like my Dark Souls: without an easy mode.

MTX: It’s got them. You can buy red orbs (for skills and abilities) and gold orbs for actual money. I didn’t notice any difference from previous games on the game dishing out red orbs. In fact, I got a load of red orbs for playing the game and bought all the abilities I wanted. I didn’t get all the abilities though. Mind you, I did notice that there seems a fair few more moves and abilities this time around from previous games but it’s not surprising given the 3 characters and weapon list. You could easily grind a level for red orbs and I’m sure people do, rather than pay money like a So MTX’s can easily be dismissed but don’t you dare click on an ability you don’t have red orbs for because it’ll tell you you can buy more orbs on the PlayStation store. It’s just an annoyance but meh. Mind you, you can also buy some subweapons (like 4 different arms for Nero) and weapon skins for like a couple of quid each. But fortunately the devs have the sensibility not to lock out any actual weapons away from the player. God bless Capcom; they’re fucking great.

It’s Contra/Gryzor/Probotec... etc. It’s tough but fair and a reet good blast. It’s not that long, which is good, and it doesn’t have online coop, which fucking sucks, but it’s difficult not to recommend because I ain’t played a jolly good run and gunner for, like, ages.

Oh and the ending music is glorious 80’s greatness. Loved it.

66. Relic Seeker: Hypogeum: A "The Room" style kinetic puzzler but with free movement rather than the usual constricted views. Which actually ends up being a waste of time because there's still only very specific areas that are interactive so allowing you to freely roam these relatively big spaces just become an annoyance. It was entertaining enough but the puzzles weren't very challenging or interesting so the genuinely lovely looking environments were a bit of a waste in the end.

An odd game, difficulty-wise. It's brutally difficult to get started with (or I'm just crap) and you have to grind your way to better skills and equipment, but once you get going, it gets easier. Each boss seems to take fewer attempts than the previous one. So much so that the final boss took three attempts to beat and the final final boss I did first attempt. Most odd.

There's a + mode too, but that looks to be more tortuous than fun, so I might give it a miss. Still, 21 hours of good gameplay in there.

Only to find that there's a +2 mode after it. Dammit.

Also, the physics are balls.

Nope, not impressed at all. Nice graphics when you’re completely stationary but get moving and it’s janky as fuck. The whole game feels like you’ve got your controllers submerged in vats of treacle. There’s sound bugs as voices play over each other, or cut out, or music is weirdly layered too loud or too quiet and so on. There’s a constant strobing effect with the graphics, like a weird stutter that’s only minimised by turning the motion blurring back on. And I fucking hate motion blurring so I played with the stuttering strobe shit throughout.

The game itself is alright but it’s too STALKER-lite for my taste. There’s really only two open world maps and they’re the best parts of the game. I wish it had gone fully open world but clearly whatever engine it’s running on can’t cope with what little it was already doing. They should really have dialled back the graphics setting and ramped up performance so it was a whole lot nicer to play. The linear levels are largely very boring and drab. One level makes you hold X to ride a boat; then stop every 10 yards, hold X again to stop, stand up, shoot stationary targets, hold x to get back in the boat, ride 10 yards, stop, shoot stationary targets, go 10 yards etc. It’s so fucking slow and the same animations play again and again and just eat up time! Hnnngh. And for a shooter there ain’t a lot of shooting.

4/10 and a go fuck yourself. I bet it’s great on a beefy PC rig but then you’d have to spend 5 hours tuning your experience and downloading the Epic launcher and selling your data to the devil or something /s

31) Geometry Wars 3 (PS Vita)

Remember when everyone was playing Geo Wars and the leaderboard was a place you waved your dick in the faces of those beneath you? And all was good in the world.

Remember when Geo Wars 2 came along and you did the same but across, like, 8 different leaderboards? All was good in the world but the dick waggling was less meaningful and people migrated to other games quicker.

Now here’s Geo Wars 3 which is still great but there’s like over 150 different leaderboards. You might as well be waving your dick into a mirror. A circus mirror. Not many people played it and whoever did quickly migrated to other games because by the time of Geo Wars 3 the board was fractured between consoles, there was no longer the “big game” that everyone plays because, well, there’s too much choice or something, and everyone has their own cliques or something. It was a great game, it just wasn’t the great community game it once was. There’s just too much to it. I played like 50 fucking levels and there’s no way anyone would compete to be top of all 50. By the end of level 50 only Skeptobot (remember him) had got that far and had managed to complete the game. Yes, he beat me on the leaderboard but, frankly, I couldn’t give a fuck. Such a great game I’ll never play again.

I’ll say this about it: The zombie hordes are incredibly impressive. They’re just like the film...kinda. They can’t be quite so vicious or you’d never finish the damn thing but they’re really fantastic as the crowd of gnashing teeth undulates and smashes against every obstacle in its way and pours around and over the edges.

Some of the levels are mechanically a bit samey and so is the gameplay. I can’t be arsed to go back to it and yet I’ve unlocked fack all.

I’ve done 2/3rds of the single class I played as (there’s something like 5 or so classes) and I’ve maxed a single weapon and got one weapon to level 4 (of 5). I don’t think I’m missing much from the other classes or by not unlocking other weapons. The weapon customisation is a bit poor to be honest. Max level is basically a suppressed version of your choice weapon when Max level should come with a fucking loudener and dragons breath rounds.

6/10

BUT the game is very polished and I’ve come across 0 bugs. So... still 6/10 because that’s how a game should be.

Cally's Caves 4: an action platformer sort of a thing for Android with a whole load of weapons to play with--all of which upgrade massively just by being used, which is a nice touch--and a good few stages to go through which bring new enemy types with them. It does have some nice ideas but overall the gameplay is quite basic and it's not quite compelling enough to make you want to do the extra exploration and stuff required to unlock what appears to be an impressive array of secrets and extra content. Indeed, from checking out a review just there, it seems that the NG+ mode isn't just that but is actually basically the rest of the game. The fact that I'm not sure I care enough to fire that up having generally enjoyed what I have played probably tells you all you need to know. Apparently the previous game is a more focused affair which also has some Metroidvania elements so I'll probably give that a go at some point.

The only CoD I’ve never played. I’ll say this, for a game about stealthy legendary Ghosts they only do one stealth mission and they even fuck that up. Tch aye?

Otherwise it really is business as usual. It’s just very blah BUT ... remember the train sequence in Star Wars: Rogue One? Well, Ghosts has its own version of it which is pretty impressive. Check it out https://youtu.be/qO_ao_ Oh and the space bits are weirdly better than CoD Infinity War’s version.

I think Ghosts is the only COD game I've completed too and I remember enjoying it. I didn't have to think much so that was right up my street.

I finished the original Doom last night on my Switch. It was great.

So great in fact, that I've gone straight into Doom 2.

71. Agent A: A Puzzle In Disguise
72. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey: 90+ hours. 90+ fucking hours! And even that's with not 100% fucking up the Cult (because the ship combat is absolute goddamned ballsacks) or the Atlantis stuff (because the combat engine is nowhere near good enough to make the the Medusa fight fun).

So, yeah, it's long. Far too long as it goes, given that you've basically seen all the variety the game offers within about ten hours. That's not necessarily a problem in itself because no game is throwing new stuff at you for the entire run time--and the core stealthy murdering gameplay is always fun--but it turns out you can stretch that past breaking point; and AC:O leaps over the point and keeps sprinting off into the distance. Basically, they were too busy seeing whether they could make such a massive games that they didn't stop to consider whether they should.

None of this is helped by the fact that it's just different enough from the previous game to be slightly worse in every way:

  • The inclusion of your own ship from the start means you'll need to spend time on it sailing from place to place in a thoroughly boring fashion.
  • The above also means that ship combat is a proper part of the game now rather than just popping up in two missions like the last game. This is a problem because you now need to spend resources upgrading the shop and, well, actually engaging in the fuck-awful ship combat at times. Or, as I did, ignoring it as much as is humanly possible. The worst of this is that an entire branch of cult members are on ships so I couldn't be fucked with it. Hunting down and fucking up cult guys was one of the more engaging parts of the game so I'm mildly annoyed I didn't get to finish that off and take down the central bad guy because fucking ship combat.
  • Kassandra and her story wasn't as engaging as By-eck from the previous game. I can't be fucked going into the details but the characterisation of her family just didn't work for me and it was fucking weird that you could go do mercenary stuff on behalf of Athens even after redeeming yourself with Sparta and moving back to live there. Just, wut?
  • The combat, which I enjoyed in the previous game, seemed more woolly and weightless this time around which robbed it of a lot of the actual strategy it was blatantly supposed to have. It mostly ends up with you dicking around long enough to let cool downs on special moves expire then just slapping people with those, which isn't as engaging as going toe to toe. It's even worse with the various large enemies you sometimes need to take down because the dodging isn't effective enough and non special moves barely seem to affect them. I could murder the shit out of hordes of normal guys but even on Easy the boss fights were horrible and I couldn't be fucked with Medusa at all in the end.
  • Arrows and stealth assassinations have been nerfed so that you're forced to earn special upgrades that you need to use to get them back to being even close to lethal again. Even these are fucking stupid because you don't know if a headshot of backstab is actually going to kill someone until you do it, and if the numbers didn't work in your favour then you're now in the middle of a pitched battle instead of the continued stealth infiltration that you wanted. Your sense of these things gets better as you progress, and I realise they want the enemy levels to matter, but it's just annoying to spend ten seconds fucking around with special moves to see if you can headshot a guy or drop kill him. I practically stopped using the bow aside from very specific situations because mostly it just became like poking a fucking bee hive.

Don't get me wrong, there's a genuine fuckton of fun to be had here but it's stretched out for too long and just doesn't quite measure up to the previous game. Play Assassin's Creed Origins and skip this, would be my recommendation.

35) Astro Bot: Rescue Mission (PSVR)

The only thing that stops me playing VR more often is setting the sodding thing up: too many wires and crap making my living room look untidy. Tch.

But then I played Astro Bot and I never wanted it to end. I’m going to go back and mop up the remaining little robots I missed, just because it’s great fun.

The penultimate boss was fucking great (it’s a comedy shark) and the final boss was just as good fun (it’s a comedy alien).

I loved everything about it, except the bits I wasn’t keen on. What didn’t I like then? Erm, controlling your lil robo in some situations can be finicky, perhaps. The enemies aren’t not much of a challenge and some don’t even have lethal attacks. The variety of the enemies isn’t very good. They’re often dressed up in different clothes which is funny though. But the levels and such have some decent variety so it’s not really a thing. The music is great too but maybe there should be more music.

Dammit I just wanted more. Hey, even the credits are great!

9.8/10 GOTY

And a lovely little game. I like the ending.

Hugely fun if slightly twee co-op puzzle platformer. Lovely atmospheric music and pretty graphics. The platforming was a little fiddly in places, but I’d definitely recommend it if you have a partner or chum in the vicinity to play couch co-op with. I’m not sure it’d be worth it single player.

Finished the 90 basic levels and reached the end credits. There are 90 expert levels to do after, so that'll keep me busy. It's a decent game too - like Sudoku but with Hexagons and few extra little twists. I was going to post a screenshot of a sample level but for some reason, the game doesn't allow capturing, so here's a photo of my telly instead:

I played this on steam ages ago.

For 11 minutes.

Before getting bored and doing something else.

Is it actually worth returning to?

Nah, it's not going to be engaging enough on a PC; I'm strictly commenting on it in the context of a commute-filling mobile game.

Is it 2D Dark Souls? Yes! Is it the best 2D Dark Souls? Maybe. It’s certainly the one that captures the essence of the original Dark Soul but with its own twist. The story is mental and has lots of religious...stuff, in it. Frankly, I didn’t follow it. That’s the hallmark of a good Dark Souls Story.

Gameplay wise it’s a Metroidvania. Is it fun? Yes. Is it hard? Yes. That’s the hallmark of a good Dark Souls game.

Sound wise, there’s sod all music and the dialogue is utterly atrocious. That’s the hallmark of a good Dark Souls game. Especially since the English dub doesn’t even pronounce some words correctly. “Visage” and another word they completely fuck up. It’s hilarious, but in all the wrong ways.

So what’s the take away from all this: It’s a bit amateur; a bit indie. The graphics are Moonstone on the Amiga. It’s kinda fascinating. It’s kinda fun. I loved the bosses. I think I’m going to look up how to get the good ending and read about the story, because it interested me. That’s the hallmark of a good Dark Souls game.

7/10

71. Agent A: A Puzzle In Disguise
72. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey
73. NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
74. Sniper Elite 4: the first of these games I've ever played and I'm definitely a fan. It's a relatively ugly game--probably partially due to the draw distance required I imagine--and certainly not short on jank, but shooting Nazis in the head from miles away is never not very satisfying.

There is a certain amount of inconsistency to the reaction of the enemies in my experience which is a mild annoyance. So sometimes you can murder loads of them from relatively close by without their mates caring too much; whereas other times you fuck one dude up and angry dicks will pour towards you from all over the fucking map. Once you're a couple of levels in though you can better judge what'll likely happen and prepare for it.

This is at it's worst right at the very start of each level when they're heavily populated so you can spend ages just murdering piles of them after your first non-stealthed shot before things settle down to a manageable degree. The worst example was a level that started me on a roof with guys already all over the area very close by. I shot one of them them spent about half an hour pinned on this single roof (the map boundary was right behind me so nowhere to go) just shooting one and moving to the other end of the roof for another shot; total comedy nonsense. I did get better at handling this as times went by but it was always a struggle not to turn the first 15 minutes of each level into a full on fucking shoot-out.

Also, a lesson I didn't learn until much further into the game than I should've: the whistle and knife are your friends almost as much as the sniper rifle!

Be aware that it's a fairly pure stealth game so if you've no patience for taking hours to work your way round a map then this isn't for you. If, like me, that concept makes you happy then you'll enjoy this.

Snipes Pleet 4 was/is awesome. So satisfying taking ages slowly picking apart a tangled knot of patrol routes. Also: making testicles shatter.

This is why Sniper Elite 3 is the better game. More linear but more focused and enjoyable as a result.
