Doesn’t mean you still have to do racist Asian caricature accents though, does it?

Ah it’s ok, it was on a film from 20 years ago.

We can repurpose the word "racist" as much as you like, then.

Yes, actually, it is.

By golly gosh you would find the views of actual Asian people who live in Asia a bit of a mind blower.

If you also want to just make stuff up that works too. It would be nice if people on the internet could ever had a good faith conversation.

My comment was getting at the fact that what you consider racist is very dependent on where you come from. If you spend time with people in Asia you'd realise that the way they talk about other Asians, Westerners, and, frankly, everyone would come under the heading of "racist" for you if it was a white person doing it in the UK.

I've been very mindful since being here of your preferred definition of "racism" as being prejudice plus power, and being in this bit of the world has been a bit of an education in that respect, and I've definitely spent time re-considering these things.

It was also based on the fact my ethnic Chinese hairdresser was making jokes about Kim in a similar vein yesterday.

However, we've all learned that trying to have any sort of grownup conversation about this stuff on this forum is completely pointless, so let's leave it there, eh. I'm racist, you won, well done.

So you think there’s absolutely no difference between you, a white man, doing that accent and an ethnic Chinese person doing it?

We are so diametrically opposed here there’s no point discussing it any further. But well done on the histrionics and straw man point scoring.

I was going to say the same thing. And thanks for proving my point.

Also I think you need to look up the word "histrionics".

You are both doing a racist thing, does that clarify things somewhat? However a westerner doing it is possibly worse as historically Europeans have always found the Asian accents “funny” and used them for cheap gags. It’s like you live in a vacuum. You may think your “one-off” joke is harmless, but it’s really not.

This subject is quite nuanced, you know.

Yes, I am very aware it's nuanced, which was, as you are doubtless aware, my point.

I also don't think you can skate over the fact you lumped ethnic Chinese and Koreans together like some massive colonialist racist. ;)

Anyway, as we've discussed before, we are probably not actually that far apart almost things. However, the apparent assumption of some form of bad faith on the part of the person you're talking to, and the approach to discussions which heavily lays on the suggestion that you are far more aware of this stuff than anyone else, tends to drive the tone of the response. Grimothys description of it as the ivory tower department is fairly apposite.

Bought a bike. It arrived in a HUGE BOX, which the delivery chap was so sweet about as he carried it up the stairs alone. He was surprised that the bike inside was for a three year old :D

N+1 is the correct number of bikes, but d-1 is the optimum.

My favourite film of 2011, possibly of the decade, were not one to count 'Your Name' has just been released on Criterion Blu-Ray. And oh? What's this? As if to salve with my general despair with the world it comes with a critically acclaimed alternate cut that's 50 minutes longer and features bonus tornadoes, my favourite weather feature? I'll buy that thank yew very much.

It has bags of extras. Watching it again makes me want to go out and take photos, run around large trees and stalk Jessica Chastain. I am very happy.

Dropped a tenner on some new sunglasses after my slightly more expensive ones got scratched to shit because I left them in a door pocket of a car. For six months. I feel these are a bit bland.

I've been on leave for two weeks, so we've bought loads of things, mostly for Ollie the Doggy. I dread to think how much we've spent. I also managed to solve a problem that's been troubling us for a few weeks by buying this.

Thers is no prize, other then a smug feeling of satisfaction, if you can correctly identify the displayed object.

Clue: It's not a rectal thermometer for hefelumps.

WINNER!!!!

Bit of a long story. Tank light wasn't working, and I'd had a failed switch about 18 months ago, so have been looking on-line for another replacement but everywhere said it was out of stock and not known when they'd be getting more. In the end I mailed the mfr who said they don't sell the switch separately any more, they're now hard wired to the LED strip, so you have to buy both.
