It was pretty, and the caves were great. The music was incredible, but it's not enough to save a rather mediocre game with a rather weak story.

And why couldn't I climb the ladder at the end? I suspect it was because I couldn't look around because technical reasons.

I went to a live play through of it last year; they had people playing the soundtrack live and even had the actual narrator standing on stage doing his lines. The real hero was the guy with the control pad though who managed to play the whole thing while controlling the camera incredibly smoothly so it was watchable.

Campaign finished. Random thoughts: Story was boring, nicely done though and surprisingly long for a fighting game; character faces remind me of Timesplitters 3; some characters are a bit boring to play - black woman with the rockets on her arms bored me to tears despite having rockets on her fucking arms; x-ray moves are great; the Xbox controller is the worse controller to play fighting games; playing online is ridiculous, I never got close to beating a single person; and finally I’m glad I never payed money to play this.

EDIT: Thought it was XL version on Gamepass but it wasn’t.

Are you sure the Gamepass version is the XL version? I thought Goro was in it along with Leatherface and the Alien.

Dammit, according to the internet you’re right. It’s only vanilla - weird, I swear the splash screen when booting up says MKXL. I wouldn’t have even noticed it otherwise.

Tch.

A decent match-three RPG type of thing, but nearly spoilt by the end-game boss having a massive amount of health leading to a lot of grinding to up levels just to get good enough to survive or to accumulate enough money to pay to revive.

Such a good game. Packed some serious emotional heft too, I thought. Mini Fop had a great time completing it on holiday (with a reasonable amount of help from me)

18) Below (Xbox)

It’s the Xbox exclusive that I was really looking forward to and was honestly going to buy it Day one, but ended up being, urgh, a roguelike so I didn’t get it.

What an idiot. It was amazing.

The tiny tiny graphics are so beautifully detailed and animated but the atmosphere? Mwah, it’s something else. And that something is channelling Shadow of the Colossus. It’s absolutely spot on - from the sound of rain drifting across a mountaintop, crashing waves, distinct thunder and lightning, its echoing caves, or the quiet drone of waterfalls and moments where it’s just absolutely completely silent. It reminded me of much of SoTC that I was almost immediately sold.

Of course the game is nothing like SoTC because it’s such a reet cunt. The world hates you, the mechanics hate you and if you’re not prepared you’ll just walk through an area and immediately get impaled on a spike trap and die. That’s right, Permadeath.

Each game starts with a new character arriving by boat on the island. You descend into the bowels of the island, scouring for resources, weapons and armour and then die. Then you’re right back on the beach with nothing but a sword. It’s like Dark Souls but with a single checkpoint at the beginning for the game. Your body remains with all your stuff and you can loot it but you’ve got to get to it first. And like DS if you don’t it’s gone forever.

There’s 18 levels below the island and about 5 shortcuts to certain floors which means there’s a lot of backtracking. To help you, you can kindle a single campfire and warp there once. Once you warp the campfire is gone until the next life so you better find another. The levels are sort of randomised but roughly the same layout each time - so, for instance, level 14 is always the same diamond shape, there’s always a shortcut to the far left of level 2 and always a hidden place to the right. Frankly, the roguelike stuff just keeps runs inside the mountain fresh so it’s always a bit scary and not repetitive. I didn’t mind it at all.

The aim of the game is to get 21 pieces of a lamp you’re given. The pieces are scattered throughout the levels and can only be accessed with the lamp. It’s a bit of a pain cause if you die twice, say, your second body is in one place but the lamp will be where your first body died so you’ve got two bloody things to retrieve. And then there’s survival elements because you need food and water. Let those bars empty and your health depletes. Some levels won’t even have food or water so you have to prepare for a run by farming higher levels.

Urgh, I’m rambling. So the top and bottom of it is, it’s immensely bloody difficult, it’s unforgiving, I needed a guide to get 4 of the lamp bits and some areas were just a pain in the arse and required thoughtful preparation of campfire placement and resources and all sorts.

But when you’re progressing and reach that next shortcut, it’s just fucking exhilarating. No more fucking ghouls eating me now! Yay! Oh fuck it’s an entirely dark level that needs torches and I’ve only got one left. FUCK.

It’s so extremely difficult and frustrating that I couldn’t honestly recommend it to anyone at all. Unless your tastes are completely aligned with mine I doubt anyone would any enjoyment out of it for more than 30 minutes. It just feels, for want of a better word, niche. It feels like it was made just for me. It’s a horrible, nasty little bastard but it’s mine and I love it.

10/10

Edit: It felt ace when the final achievement for completing the game popped up. Number of people who completed the game is a mere 0.16%!

Great visual storybook for those that thought Gone Home was just a tad bit boring - that I find incredibly hard to recommend due to utterly baffling technical issues that mean there’s an almost constant fucking judder and stutter when moving the camera around; especially from side to side. I’d probably be spaffing my load over this if I wasn’t so bothered by this painfully irritating annoyance. You might not be so bothered or you might be able to look past it, mind. Oh and you get a whopping 30FPS with fuck all happening on screen where the game is basically a walking simulator style game. It’s just not good enough in this day and age. Very disappointed.

It played fine on the PC when I first went through it but yeah, it was noticeably janky on the PS4. Not enough to ruin it by any measure I didn't think but still surprisingly so given the relatively little it seems to be asking of the console. I've seen the exact same kind of weird and terrible texture pop in when a scene first loads on another game somewhere but I'm struggling to remember which one. Presumably it's common to wherever engine sits behind both games.

What remains of Edith Finch. (PS4)

First time I've finished a game in a long time. I enjoyed the simplicity of it and the way that you helped the stories to play out.

2. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Switch) – completed all three episodes with 159 diamonds
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (PS4) - completed campaign on Normal
4. Super Blackjack Battle II Turbo - The Card Warriors (Switch) - completed Single Player Combat mode with Andre
5. Undertale (Switch) - got Neutral and Pacifist endings
6. Deltarune (Switch) - completed Chapter 1
7. Portal 2 (PC) - completed all six co-op courses
8. Escaped Chasm (PC) - got 2/4 endings
9. You are Jeff Bezos (PC) - got Neutral and True Endings
10. Celeste (Switch) - finished in 11:31:11.381, 42/175 strawberries and 2,261 deaths.

1,000 of those deaths were probably because of the d-pad on the Switch Pro controller deciding to go straight when I wanted a diagonal etc. I really enjoyed this, but there were a couple of sections that I just kept banging my head against a brick wall with, so I’ll admit I dipped into Assist Mode very briefly both times.

Still, I did 99.5% of it properly and it was pretty brutal. The music, art, story and gameplay were really top notch. I’d really recommend this to anyone who likes their games to be a challenge but also enjoy a good story.

I was 114/175 strawberries at 9 hrs 30 mins for the story. Not sure about the deaths but I reckon you’ll win that!

Have you tried any of the B-sides?

As manic, maddening and relationship-destroying as the first, possibly even more. I guess Sal and I will have to go back to being nice to each other now, but things will never go back to the way they were.

30. Vulture Island: brilliant puzzle-platformer from the devs of the also brilliant Traps 'n' Gemstones. This one presents initially as a standard 2D platformer with the Mario 3 style overworld, but you quickly realise that you can play any of the levels in any order at any time. Indeed you need to keep revisiting because there's a Metroidvania element here where items acquired from one level will let you progress in another. There's also NPCs to talk to and do quests for which gain you items and progress. Further to that, there are three characters each with their own set of contained levels and all of these must be completed to finish the game; but you can hop between them at will so if you're stuck with one character you can try out another one. Overall it's brilliant stuff and comes highly recommended.

Seriously, fuck this game. The AI is fucked and the enemy designs are fucking terrible. Who thought L4D witches in a Dark Souls game was a good idea? Obviously the guys who made this because every dungeon (there’s 3 and a mini one) is filled with the fuckers. Once I was attacked by 4 at a time, another time I defeated 6 in a row in quick succession. Enemies are placed behind walls or hiding until you pass so they get a cheap shot on you all the time. A good few times is boring, but I could live with it - but here, they’re everywhere. They don’t understand what made Dark Souls one of the best games of all time and the classic series that it is.

What it has got going for it is a beautiful overworld that’s basic (visually, it’s got its own style) but gorgeous. Some great vistas (but no Majula beautiful, aye, Dark Souls 2 fans, aye, AMIRITE?) and great landscapes that span the distance that you’ll travel to. Ok, well they understood that about DS at the very least. Oh and their checkpoints? Fucking hell man, dungeons don’t have one until you’re outside the boss and the final boss is a run from your STARTING VILLAGE, to a cave a minutes run, through the mini dungeon, down a long empty slope and across a lengthy bridge EVERY FUCKING TIME YOU DIE. Oh and there’s enemies everywhere and you can’t refresh your flask neither. The only worse run from a bonfire in DS I can think of is probably the final boss run to Gwen. Oh. That’s where they got it. Well, this is still worse.

I’ve never hated a game I’ve completed more than Red Ninja on the PS2. 14 years later, Ashen is my new most hated game.

So yeah, give it a go. You might like it.

Oh and it says I completed it in 32 hours. I don’t believe that for a minute, or maybe it just felt longer.

Didn't exactly plan to complete this, but I was testing a C64 out and once I'd figured out the game (there are boulders on the tracks that block you and to get rid of them, you just go back a screen and then forward again and they've gone), it was done in 20 minutes.

As long as you don’t play it on the Xbox, it’s gotta be one of the best indie games out there. Think Mr Driller meets Metroidvania. It’s just fun. I enjoyed digging and collecting and finding secrets and just having a jolly time. I was never frustrated or bored or wanted to cut off my fingers and see how many I could cram into the hole in my penis.

6:30 mins to finish with 50% of the secrets found.

9/10: Recommended (just not on Xbox because of that stupid bug)

I've been playing it on the 3DS and it's really great, but sometimes i miss the simplicity of the first game. There are some annoying parts in the second game (like the Vectron which is the equivalent of a stealth section), but thankfully they're short. I've just gotten the jetpack and it's so fun flying around.

33. Forgotten Hill Tales: Little Cabin in the Woods: I stumbled across another developer of pointy-clicky-escapey games that desperately wants to be Rusty Lake and bites a lot of their style i.e. macabre puzzle games with an over-arching and bizarre plot played out over the course of many games. Little Cabin in the Woods is the first one I played--picked at random as I've no idea what the proper order is--and it's decent. Lacking a lot of the polish of the Rusty Lake stuff of course and slightly more focussed on mini games than the RL stuff but still decent.
34. Forgotten Hill Mementoes: this is the second one of theirs and it's a lot longer than the previous one. It seems that Little Cabin in the Woods is intended to be some short thing in their universe whereas Mementoes is a proper series entry. It's more of the same and decent for passing time on the train. The adverts get a little bit annoying but not enough to be off-putting, and it is nice to get a game like this for free.

35. Forgotten Hill: Fall: this is apparently the actual first entry in the series so I'll play them in order from this point. This one was decent but as part of it's 'story' you spend most of the game in a house with no power so you're exploring the rooms with a torch. That instantly makes it harder because there are things to pick up that are easy to miss in the dark. Hopefully that's not a gimmick that extends into the rest of the series.

9. You are Jeff Bezos (PC) - got Neutral and True Endings
10. Celeste (Switch) - finished in 11:31:11.381, 42/175 strawberries and 2,261 deaths
11. Overcooked 2 (Switch) - finished story in co-op mode with 95 stars
12. SteamWorld Dig: A Fistful of Dirt (Switch) - finished story

This was great fun from start to finish. Games with mining and crafting elements tend to make my eyes roll these days, which is possibly why I hadn’t considered it before, but it had the right mix of platforming, mining, crafting and exploring to keep me interested in the 5 hours or so it took me to finish it. Two thumbs up!

37. Tiny Room Stories: Mystery Room: yep, another Android pointy-clicky-escaper. This one has a nice low poly art style but is also presented isometrically so you need to swipe around to see things from all angles in order to progress. There are a couple of points where this just needlessly obfuscates stuff but generally speaking it's a surprisingly effective technique and makes exploring things much more interesting than is typical. I got stuck on it for ages because it's in early access and the dev has changed some stuff around, so the solution for a particular puzzle didn't apply at all in the older versions of the game that most people were referencing. That one single thing aside it's been a fun, logical and smooth progression that's been great fun. It's possibly worth noting that what's there is technically only chapter 1 of the game but individual levels in the planned three chapters currently having released dates telescoping out into 2020 I'm going to put it down now and maybe check back in with it later to see how that delivery schedule is actually holding up.

It's a puzzle game that distinguishes itself by being played in the first person and being Unreal powered; the latter of which means that despite being old it still looks fucking lovely by mobile game standards. The downside to that is that the relatively complex environments make it harder to tell interactable items from just level furniture. It has some really nice ideas and some nice control thing, but it's also obtuse and frustrating in places so swings and roundabouts.

I was stuck on level 2 for an eternity but I’ve managed to crush the last 2 levels and the end of game baddie in no short order. I really enjoyed myself actually. Yeah, it was reet good this. I was quite pleasantly surprised. Man, I was going to play DmC 5 about 2 games back. These indie games are sometimes really super.

Brilliant. It ‘is’ a platforming Hotline Miami - down to the psychedelics, the bumping soundtrack, the one-hit kills, the kooky storyline and all that jazz. It’s also got other stuff though like boss fights and dialogue choices that affect story beats and cut scenes and stuff.

It’s all compelling stuff which I’ve just soaked up over the last few days. It’s interesting, fun to play and, ah fuck it, just go gerrit cause it’s ace.

The soundtrack is also fucking ace and Hit the Floor is my jam. https://music.apple.com/gb/album/hit-th ... 1462458003

Pretty decent blast. It’s a bit repetitive after a while but in short bursts (and I suppose being on the Switch it’s perfect for that) it’s a fun little game just not a fantastic one.

The music is decent, the story is bobbert, there’s too many buttons to press (seriously, move character left stick, aim right stick, activate slow mo press L3, jump B, fire weapon right trigger, secondary fire or split aim left trigger all the while covering the left bumper to avoid - fucking thing gave me conniptions at times), the levels are bland, the platforming bits are annoying, but the jumping around shotgunning peoples faces off in slowmo is terrific. It’s, what, £15 and is worth the money. It’s short but sweet.
