Huh. He hasn't been in it for ages, and he's on the death list, so I rather assumed he'd gone.

Nah, the actor had cancer or something. He’s still alive and on Arya’s list in the books.

A shame. Although that doesn't stop them from confusing you by changing the actor. Wouldn't be the first time.

The chap who sang the lewd song about Cersei and Jamie had a choice of losing his hands or his tongue and wanted to keep his hands

So, in the last episode, where the hell was that wasteland outside the gates of King’s Landing? Have we seen anything like that before?

The showrunners shot themselves in the foot by using an aerial shot of Dubrovnik in season 5 which showed tree covered hills around the city. Literally every other has shown the city to be surrounded by plains. Which makes little sense really.

Cersei chopped it all down so she could see the baddies coming.

Also, it's a lot more barren around the Dragonpit side of Kings landing so she might have been looking over that wall at the baddies.

Also Kings Landing in that aerial shot is really quite small. Considering how big they can make their armies you'd think the capital city would be somewhat bigger.

There are mountains to the left of Dubrovnik old town as shown on that photo, but nearer to the camera it’s all the newer town.

It’s a lovely place. If you can visit, I recommend it.

I have a theory about next week. I'm going to spoil it in case it turns out to be right, plus although it was initially formed whilst watching the previous episode. I caught the preview of next week's episode which reinforced it. So don't read if that worries you.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
It's about the 2nd dragon. I don't think it's dead. I mean it crashed into the sea, but maybe it's good at swimming?

The trailer showed Euron (sp?) Looking and listening for dragons (which we hear in the background) he's scouring the sky, but can't see it, I think it's going to come out of the water.

So yeah I think there are 2 dragons left still!

I guess we will see

My theory is that

the dragon is dead, so we now have one left and two Targaryans, and it choosing to pick Dany or Jon will be significant.

Whoever fired the first few arrows they absolutely, superhumanly nailed it. Fucking Eric Bristow on there or something. But then all she had to do was fly round the back of the ships, or dive down on them, those arrow firing things didn't look like they could aim higher than halfway up.

Have you ever tried to ride a horse in a direction that it doesn’t fancy going because it’s been a bit spooked? Never going to go back in the direction of those arrows, just bolt the other way. I know they are dragons instead of actual horses, but I have watched a few nature documentaries and I’m pretty sure they’re closely related.

You might want to know that the Rex Factor podcast have released a special episode about Game of Thrones, in which they "go through the story of the show and draw out comparisons between the characters and events in the show vs. the real life history that inspired George RR Martin". So, er, check that out from your favourite podcast provider.

I’ve seen people speculate that the dragon is armoured but I reckon it’s got Gatling guns attached and Dany is screaming dagga dagga.

For the spectacle that it’s become, yes. It’s no Red Wedding but those days have gone. It looks immense though. As always, the internet is having a mardy on but if you just sit and enjoy the ride I think you’ll enjoy it.

Also wondering if they could fit in 20 more minutes of things falling on Arya and her getting progressively more dusty.

Yeah, there’s some cool moments and it looks spectacular, but it’s not got the level of quality it had before the books ran out.

They also used the same few streets in Dubrovnik over and over again, just from different angles.

Because it’s the only way the writers know how to get them from A to B to C. Honestly, the twitter post I linked a few posts up has really transformed how I look at this show. Remember how fucking amazing it was in S1 when Ned’s head came off and you were like: whoa! Shit! This show is really not like anything else on TV! Well, now it is. It’s exactly like everything else. We’ve had cool spectacle, but it’s disconnected from what used to make it feel so grounded and solid: the characters. It’s too much sound and fury, but signifying nothing.

Here’s an actual quote from one of the showrunners, if you’re curious how they feel about subtlety and nuance:

Dany’s heel turn was the worst of it for me. It should have been epic. It’s been teased for years. We should have seen an extended sequence of events, her feeling trapped in ever-narrowing circles, suddenly unsure if she can trust the loyalty of her advisors and allies. Always with the yawning threat of her family’s madness beckoning. Drip drip drip, ratcheting the tension, the audience unsure if she will reach breaking point or not.

Instead we got maybe ten minutes of scenes of her looking at people congratulating Jon and executing Varys, clumsy foreshadowing, followed by a frown, and suddenly we’ve gone from The Breaker of Chains and “I will not rule over ashes” to “time for a dragonfire party and everyone’s invited.” It wasn’t earned. It was cheap and it was lazy and as heel turns go it would embarrass the writers of the WWF.

Meh, I mostly disagree. Up until today, I felt they acted very much in keeping with their previous characterisation. And there was no way we were getting a sweetness and light incest wedding finale so one of Dany and Jon had to go, and if that's head to head it provides the drama we've missed out on with the impactless death of the Night Kind and dethroning of Cersei.

Remember when the Hound realised the futility of the cycle of violence and lived a simple life as a builder and farmer for a season and appeared to be one of the characters who can learn and grow from his experiences? What happened to that guy’s story? “Guy returns to violence that kills him” could a valid ending but... why did he do it? He was driven back to it, reluctantly, after the people he was living with were killed. But then the reluctance vanished without trace and he was right back to the same character we started with.

You could argue that despite Sandor's best efforts to walk away from and put away violence and revenge the tides of events and general momentum of the realm meant that he was pulled back to an inevitable, violent, firey death. He couldn't live in peace while Gregor lived

You know what pissed me off? They've been teasing the crossbow and the dragon skull in the opening credits all season. I was convinced that the wall was going to crumble, the dragon would be exposed and Jamie was going to kill the last of Dany's children

I’ve watched it twice now and I feel the Dany going mental was done no more than ok.

On second viewing, it felt more believable that she was going to burn King’s Landing to the ground. She’s said she would many times over for starters, she’s lost everyone in her inner circle, had two dragons killed, between betrayed by Varys (who also tries to kill her), she can barely trust Tyrion since he’s always doing stuff behind her back and owning up to it, but worst of all, when she’s at her lowest point, unloved by anyone with a usurper on her doorstep, Jon refuses to give her the D. If he’d have just nailed her it would have been fine. E Clark does a decent job prefight showing off Danys emotions.

I didn’t enjoy the bells triggering something in her, which was a bit crap. That needed much more attention. I understood why they did it that way but it doesn’t work.

But the absolute biggest fucking unforgivable sin was the “Previously on Game of Thrones” which has a close up of Danys face with all these quotes going on to give the impression she was going mad in that instance. Before I’d even watched the episode I said audibly to no one at all “Oh, they’re going with Mad Queen then”.
