Game Pass is a £1 for THREE MONTHS, right now. I thought I’d have a quick look and it turns out there’s at least a half a dozen games I’d really love to have a go on!

The offer has been running for a few weeks - I think TheVision mentioned it in the Bargains thread. Two of the Game Pass titles I've tried, I ended up spending longer downloading them than actually playing before uninstalling -

Mortal Kombat X - The story mode started with some long and nonsensical QTE thing which I didn't even bother finishing before quitting and uninstalling
Monster Hunter World - I wanted to get as far as the core gameplay to see if it was even the kind of thing I wanted to play, but the start is all cut scenes and I wasn't sure when I was actually going to get to do anything of my own accord, so that got removed too. I suspect it's aimed more at people who have played games in the series already.

My gaming time is quite limited these days, so my patience for bloat in games wears thin quickly. I did enjoy PES 2019 though - that seems to play a much better game of football than FIFA does - it's just a shame that most of the team names are unlicensed.

Things what I played:

Cluster Truck:

Nice concept but fucking awful controls that make it literally unplayable. I messed about with the settings to find a sweet spot but I was either dragging my head around bathed in tar or twitchy like I’d done a metre of coke. I got to World Two and after repeatedly trying to get around a simple corner for an hour it got deleted. I strongly suspect it’s PC origins meant it was built for KBAM and whoever ported it couldn’t give a flying fuck. And how come I can’t remap the buttons? I can’t move my fucking head (in game, natch) and press jump at the same time and that’s 99% of the fucking thing. There’s two fucking buttons that need pressing in the whole game - run and jump!? There’s four fucking shoulder buttons that they could use FFS. If they’d stuck jump on one of those I might have persisted. Utterly ridiculous and baffling design choice.

Don’t waste your money.

EDF (one of them)

This is one of those that Rev. Stu spaffed over but I didn’t play it cause I’m not a mindless sheep at his behest. Played the first level. Bloody loved it. Damn.

But this sequel (it might be the third one, maybe, I wish people would just fucking number things) (the 360 version anyway - not sure it if got more than one version on that) really appears to require co-op and i haven’t got anyone to play it with. Ah well.

Others I’ve tried since getting Game Pass (I’m trying to cut down the crap on the hard drive):

The Technomancer

Unskippable opening cut scene that bored the ever living fuck out of me. Then it’s a generic RPG set in a post-apocalypse Mad Max world with some choppy combat. I didn’t give it much of a chance and it did absolutely nothing to suck me in. In fact it was doing everything in its might to make me instantly hate it. Deleted.

Outcast - Second Contact

And if I thought that was bad, this comes along and it’s like “Hold my coat”. ANOTHER generic RPG given away with Games with Gold that wouldn’t look out of place on an Xbox 360. I’ve got nothing against old games but brand new games that look like old games because they’re ropey as fuck can sod off. Oblivion was less choppy and buggy. Everything about this is amateur. Deleted.

Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

Hold on, why is this über polished and loads of fun? I jumped into a multiplayer game and was astounded how good it looks. And it’s tons of fun too - all the wacky characters from the aging games are here looking better than ever in 3 dimensions. The graphics have a sort of squishy plasticine look which is just great. Almost kinda realistic. Remember that SNES fighter that had digitised models in? Can’t remember the name. Anyway, so it’s a typical MP shooter with a focus on special characters (ala Overwatch) and objective based games (but there’s your standard crap too). I tried a load of plant based characters and some zombos and had loads more fun than I ever expected from this.

So yeah, PvZ:GW2, who knew it was so good? If you picked it up with GwG and just want to fanny around for a bit having some fun times give it a whirl.

I quite enjoyed the first PvZ GW but I had no one to play it with so it quickly fell by the wayside.

Hmmm...

Started the game, it paired me with a random person when all I wanted to do was play alone so I could work out the game before I had to interact with anyone.
Gave me a chest and told me to find an NPC, but I had no idea where to go and no indicators of where to find this person, so wandered around with a chest for a few minutes, found myself at a dead end with no ability to do anything as I was holding a chest, that blocked me from bringing up a map or anything, so I quit the game.

Great first impression!

Yeah.. You're doing it wrong! :)

You can put the chest down but the map is on the ship so you'd have to get on that first. And yeah, it works best in multiplayer. If you were lucky, you'd have been paired with someone who would have been happy to help you out.

I think it's a great game but I've been with it since day one so yeah, I can see how the learning curve might be a little steep.

More stuff wot I played for a quid:

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3:

Couldn’t get into it at all. Looked pretty enough but, man, I ain’t got the patience to learn a load of combos for no reason.

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite

Prettier but, again, I couldn’t get into it. I hate myself for not wanting to play it cause the moves were insane and it looked loads of fun.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

It looked very pretty and played the same as the previous instalments but, man alive, it was initially tediously boring and the characters are absolutely nothing to write home about. I hate Lara’s sidekick mate already. I might stick with it just because I’ve played the other two but I’ve a feeling I might not enjoy it as much.

See, this is the problem for getting access to loads of games for such a token amount of money, you just play tons of games for five mins each. It’s like when I downloaded every Amiga ROM.

Absolutely. It’s overwhelming choice. The good thing is though I’m playing games I’ve wondered about but never bought. And now I know why.

I did play some Below earlier though and fell in love with the atmosphere. After Split/Second that’s what I’m going to invest my time in.

Marvel Vs Capcom has an easy control mode where you don't have to learn anything.

That's the main reason that I don't enjoy trips to Arcade Club as much as I probably should. When you were limited by the number of 10ps you had in your pocket it felt like the stakes were higher.

Here’s something cool with Games Pass. I’ve got Halo: The MCC on disc and since I’ve got GP and Halo:MCC is on GP, it no longer asks me for the disc when I boot it up!

It doesn’t even tell you it’s doing this either - I just accidentally pressed on Halo and, boom, I’m playing Halo.

Kinda cool.

Hey, that Halo: MCC is bloody good an’ all what ho? They’ve 4Ked the fuck outta it.

More games wot I played.

We Happy Few

Interesting-ish Bioshock-ish type of game. But, fuck me, it’s a hot mess. 30FPS-ish when it can arsed on an Xbox 1X isn’t good enough and the amount of screen tearing is un-fucking-acceptable.

Worst still, there’s no animation for CLIMBING A 5 FOOT LADDER. You have to hold X and then it goes blank and you’re teleported up the ladder. Every ladder. Lazy as fuck.

And the load times are so long it puts Prey to shame. Or at least equals them.

I was ‘sort of’ enjoying it especially the setting and some of the daft English accents but the above properly pissed me off.

I honestly don't find it that bad, it's just like any UI really, you just have to learn your way around it.

It's no better or worse than the PS4 interface IMO, although I do spend more time on the XB1X so that could be more down to familiarity, I guess.

It certainly wouldn't put me off getting Game Pass for £1 to play a game I wanted to take a look at.

Y’know what game I’ve never played but quite fancied a look at:

Jetpac Refueled

It was, unfortunately, a very boring remake of the original speccy classic. Boring visuals, boring tune (singular) that repeats after about 4 sodding bars, and a boring gameplay loop.

Judging from the friends leaderboard it doesn’t look as though the BEEX of old gave it much time of day either.

Wow, that was one of the first XBLA games I ever bought, for 400 points or whatever. I can’t imagine it holding up very well today.

Stop playing all this garbage.

As I found out yesterday when I loaded up the game for the first time, beat your score and then realised there was a whole load of other people above us to beat. :( No idea how Trousers had the patience to get the score he did - it's not the best of games.

He's an absolute fucking tart for getting high scores, what he tends to do is zone in on a particular mode or level and just smash the fuck out of it until he gets ACEBEST SCORE.

When he came over he demonstrated his skills on Resogun, but only on the first couple of levels, when I questioned this he said he just plays those two levels and doesn't bother with the rest of the game. So it's almost like a kind of cheating, really.

Then he moaned about input lag on Everybody's Golf on PS4 Pro, to the extent he even sent me a video of it running on his PS4 when he got home, to demonstrate that it doesn't have input lag on the base console. That was his excuse for being totally shit at it, anyway.

Hilariously, I just stopped when I beat Mop’s score so I could perch over his name with my teabags. It took me a single attempt.

I did it with the retro one too.

One little thing yesterday pleased me about the whole Xbox One experience. I was watching the cricket on TV but via the Guide app, so I was able to switch to the Store to find Split/Second to start that downloading, then switched back to the cricket and then got a notification overlaid over the cricket when the download was complete. The overall Xbox UX isn't perfect, but it does do some stuff like that well.

I played even MOAR games:

Star Wars: The Force Unleased

You start off as the legendary villain Darth Vader chopping up Wookiee’s!!! And that’s just the opening segment!!! ZOMG! And I reckon the visuals are like 4K or some shit cause the image is crisp as FOOK!!!

I don’t know what happens after that though cause it’s so fucking BORING. It’s deathly boring and clunky and the fucking combat is just mind numbingly dreadful.

Deleted.

Didn't even make it through all the tutorials, you've got to use the stick for your swing and direction and power, I found it fiddly and annoying and massively less fun than just firing up one of the many excellent golf games in MAME.

At least it was 'free', sort of.

Everybody's Golf on PS4 is about 8750% better than this.

I've just played one round of it and I really like it. It's the same basic game as the previous two, but with some much needed polish and ironing out some of the presentation issues (. Using the stick to swing the club might not be for everyone, but I like it and it's the same system as used in Ace Golf. Only downside so far is asking me to choose a difficulty level for my career mode when I've no idea how hard the game is going to be. I went for 'Easy' rather than the default of 'Very Easy' and won the first tournament by 11 shots. At least when you progress, you can up the level.

More games wot I done played:

Ashen

It’s the console exclusive which is a bit like Dark Souls. But it’s DS for beginners since it adds:-

1) A map;
2) Co-op either as a permanent AI companion or drop-in/drop-out by some random dude off the internet;
3) Quest markers;
4) Simpler boss fights (that I’ve played so far);
5) Reviving your coop buddy and visa versa;
6) and the revive mechanic isn’t that onerous either; and,
7) super easy starter section.

Only problem is, its lacking a bit of the Fromsoft polish. It struggles to lock on to some enemies that are behind you or just in the view of the camera; if you do lock on to an enemy and kill em then it doesn’t automatically shift the lock-on onto the next enemy.

Since you get perma co-op the enemies tend to come in packs several hours into the game. But it still makes a decent challenge but the lock on is still a bit wonky. And the enemy placement is almost always “behind a thing” so you’ll walk straight into them. It’s a bit cheap but maybe they’ll stop doing that.

I don’t care for the voice acting either and the story is - most shockingly - all about dark/light and, um, ash. If you’re going to copy something just make some other shit up people. Jesus Christ.

That being said, while I was a bit bored at the beginning, it’s gotten much tougher and I’m having much more fun as a consequence. The graphics have their own stylings too which is quite nice albeit they’re a bit plain but it does make for some nice environments as it does a good job of doing a DS’ by going places you can see in the distance.

I don’t know, it started off a bit shit, but since it’s started trying to beat me back I’ve been having a much better time.

Might be one to have a look at if you’re missing DS and wanted to play an inferior clone since the next instalment might be ages away.

You can have a Dark Souls clone without copying the story as well, init.
