Oh, yeah.

Updates aren't all rolled out at once, the bandwidth spikes would be eye-watering, even for Microsoft, so they're staggered in some (probably vaguely sensible) way. So your computer was saying it was up to date because it was up to date - at least as far as the rollout was concerned.

Point #1, however, is a legit one.

Do they normally take up to 11 months?

Is that aimed at Microsoft or Hearthly? I'm not sure what else he could've done here.

Wasn't this the update that fucked everything, so they stopped it and only started sending it out again recently?

It was still getting rolled out October/November time last year IIRC, but I thought it was all done by now. (Nearly a full year after its original release!)

The thing is, I know what an arsehole Windows is with shit like this, which is why I basically left the laptop turned on for a weekend, rebooting it every day, and it still decided it didn't want to apply the April 2018 update.

No, it waited three days, and then decided it wanted to download 3.5GB on a metered network and apply the update in the middle of the day with a mandatory reboot.

I've only had this PC for a couple of weeks, so I guess that might be why it's behind on the major updates.

Well this is a step in the right direction, certainly.

https://www.techradar.com/news/microsof ... 019-update

Quote:
Starting with the upcoming Windows 10 May 2019 Update, users will be notified of a major update's availability, but will be able to put off its installation until the device they're using is close to no longer being supported in its current state.

Promising more transparency with its update practices, Microsoft has revealed that users will be able to pause critical updates for up to 35 days after that 'final' notification, although you will have to bite the bullet eventually.

Fucking hell, Microsoft.

Strong update skills with this one.

Still a bit of 'inappropriate drive reassignment' wouldn't cause any issues, right? Especially if internal drives are affected too?

Fucking hell, Microsoft.

So, there's a problem, identified in advance. They're pre-warning users and not forcing the updates on affected users.

What more do you want?

Not to be so utterly shit at their jobs that this ever nearly got close to making it out into the wild in the first place? How did it even get through the testing phases?

Oh OK then, yay for Microsoft! They're great! And their QA absolutely hasn't been flushed down the toilet since they sacked a load of internal QA staff and farmed it out to the 'community' to improve their bottom line.

I’ve had no issues with Windows 10 except it kept fucking up my Logitech G27 drivers by switching back on the auto-update drivers option with each major update.

I don't know why you take these things so personally. There's a fix. The whole IT world is built on bodges and patches and workarounds. My entire job is making a million different things all fit together in a functional way. Just last week a windows update laid waste to half of our servers. This is the way it has always been.

I think Hearthly's point is probably more "it fucking shouldn't be this way."

Unfortunately Microsoft are stuck really, they have so much legacy code and applications that they need to support that I think getting rid of all of the bodges etc. is just unrealistic.

Mac updates generally "just work", although they're not without their fair share of problems they do all seem to be minor rather than system-destroying ones.

Lol Mac updates in my experience fail constantly and break existing shit all the time. Macs just have no history of compatibility promises like Microsoft.

I was at a workshop at Microsoft a few years ago and we asked why they seemed to have so many issues.

They responded, saying MACs are kinda standard build, yet windows machines can be anything as users can even build their own. I suppose that makes sense.

It's more that it shouldn't be this way, AND it doesn't have to be this way. It's the 'feature' updates for Win10 that tend to be the most problematic, since these essentially reinstall the OS multiple times per year. The routine security and cumulative updates are generally OK.

As I pointed out earlier in the thread, Windows 7 is a fully supported and maintained operating system, but because it doesn't get stupid feature updates, it remains a fast, stable, solid operating system, with smaller updates on a less frequent basis, that don't actively fuck up things that were previously working fine. (We've still got two Windows 7 machines in the house, they're a dream compared to the Windows 10 machines.)

Microsoft chose to make Windows 10 the way it is, the way Windows 7 has worked since it went onto Extended Support shows there's no need for Windows 10 to work the way it does, that's a Microsoft choice that suits them, not their customers.

I mean, just ask anyone to name one thing they dislike about Windows 10, and an awful lot of people will say 'The way it's always updating itself', and the truth is that a lot of those updates are unnecessary.

The May update ironically does allow the ability to schedule/reject the content updates, I believe.

Yes - https://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/ ... 4#p1016424

The problem there is, so many people might start deferring the updates for as long as possible that the updates don't get 'beta-tested' on enough systems for the clangers to be weeded out.....

MS Paint survives too, which oddly makes the BBC News front page

I still haven't found a decent alternative to it yet for quickly opening up a selection of images, manually cropping them and then resizing, so I'm glad Paint will be around a little longer.

You could use it to open command prompt by saving a 3*2 square of pink or something then running the saved file as something else

It's okay, but it's way heavier and takes longer to load and shit. Paint was always good for just cropping stuff.

:this:

Also, I still use Windows Photo Viewer as that's quicker for just browsing through images. Plus if you rotate an image in the viewer and then close it, it'll save the same at that orientation, so it's handy for quickly fixing some of the photos my phone has got wrong.

Sure, doesn't work for in-game screenshots though, as an example.

On my home PC I just use the photo editor in windows 10, it seems like a perfectly serviceable, simple piece of software to me for cropping, rotating and other little tweaks.

I'm on version 1803 of Windows 10 and haven't had the free disk space to install 1809 until tonight. It took a couple of shots at it and failed both times (without any useful feedback as to why of course) and now it's literally just given up entirely. Windows Update says I'm totally up to date at 1803 and that's that. So, fuck knows what'll happen now?

I used a cashpoint the other day; put my card in and up popped a "this copy of Windows is not genuine" message, which was off-putting.

I'm a bit blasé, though; took money out anyway.

Windows Update says I'm totally up to date at 1803 and that's that. So, fuck knows what'll happen now?

It'll probably have a punt at it at some random time in the future.

We have five Windows 10 machines in the house - (plus my personal work laptop which makes six) - and they all seem to decide arbitrarily what updates they need and what constitutes being 'up to date', although I guess that's partly because Microsoft's backend is trying to work out which bit of their shitty code will kill any of them stone dead at any given time.

Off the top of my head we've got three at 1803 and three at 1809, they all say they are 'up to date'.

I've given up trying to control Windows 10, it's a rolling shitshow that'd be funny if it weren't so serious. We also still have two Windows 7 machines in the house, they're a dream by comparison.

I have a desktop PC and a laptop. That’ll do.
