Watch Green Book then.

Great cast and a lovingly told story. Made me feel all nice and warm at the end.

Will wait for the DVD.

Isn't it factually wrong?

There were accusations of that. It's also been accused of using white saviour tropes. I found that rather off-putting in Hidden Figures, which I enjoyed well enough in the moment but got quite angry at the more I thought about it afterwards, as well as reading about its numerous historical inaccuracies that (to me) changed the tone of the piece.

More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Book_(film)#Controversies

This is a very sharp bit of satire that makes the point quite well, I think:

It’s “inspired by true true events” so probably but it’s a film not a documentary.

I’m not satisfied with the white saviour argument for this particular film. The white guy is hired precisely because he’s a rough neck white guy to protect the lead while visiting the still, at the time at least, racist, and dangerous for black people, Deep South. It’s central to the story that the racist white guy protects the black guy from other racist white guys (and in doing so learns to be a little bit less racist).

You want to watch a horror film that’s not a horror film? Watch Hereditary. Freaked me out, made me audiably gasp twice and has these long quiet shots where your stomach just sinks as you await the outcome. There’s some absolutely marvellous performances from the youngest actor to the oldest. The direction was just about pitch perfect and there’s some interesting camera work when needs must. But then director knows when to just stop and let the actors do the hard work.

I don’t go out my way to watch horror films but this was great. Horrible, but great. Seriously great. But fucking horrible. In a great way. But then again it’s not really a horror film.

9/10 wouldn’t watch again.

Thought it was okay right up until near the end. When he jumped out the window it was pure slapstick. We both just burst out laughing. Then there was the monologue of exposition that was clearly just shoved in there in case you were too thick to get it.

On the same tip of horror film that isn't a horror film: watch The Witch as it's brilliant.

I don’t agree with that assessment. He was having a pretty fucked up day nor did I think the monologue was too much. The latter left enough questions for the viewer to search out while capping off the story nicely, but sure, I’d have been just as happy with a sudden cut right at the end without the short monologue to really fuck with the viewer. It wasn’t overly offensive though.

Personally, I thought it was thoroughly excellent.

It had elements of some of the best horror films such as the Exorcist and the Shining but with some of the more modern stylings of the more recent The House on Haunting Hill on display.

I understand why he jumped but we both had the same reaction and laughed, it wasn't an assessment. There's just some unintended comic timing to it.

And the monologue did just feel really heavy handed and out of place. Any money it was tacked on after screenings.

You might be right, just been looking about and noticed a comment on Reddit:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Apparently in test screenings he rips his own eyes out at the end and that’s how the movie ended. For the final cut they pulled that and added the little speech after he got crowned.

But yeah, all that imagery of the X’d Out eyes? I was expecting it.

It was awesome, the first half of the film builds to the insanity of the second half.

Also, Nic Cage in a chainsaw fight.

Agreed, my film of 2018, peak Cage and the best depiction of an acid trip I've seen on screen...also King Crimson and Johan Johannson's excellent score.

I am disappointed to say that the biopic of Norwegian Black Metal band Mayhem, "Lords of Chaos" is strangely dull, which given the subject matter is a feat in itself. It starts well but just kind of bumps along for the last hour. Still the real life Varg Vikernes has denounced the movie, not because of any inaccuracies but because he was played by a Jewish actor...so at least it pissed off a nazi.

Maybe you need to have done acid to appreciate it.
I found the first 20 minutes a resounding art-over-substance, incoherent mess.

Anyone else watched The Highwaymen? You should if you haven't. Costner has continued to mature into a non-up-his-own-arse-Postman/Waterworld-dickhead-turned-proper-actor and Woody is just brilliant. The period setting is perfectly well done, pacing is brilliant, cinematography borders on the lovely. 899 bananas.

This is next on my list after Santa Clarita Diet Season 3.

Woody is always awesome and Costner is a very fine actor now he's realised he isn't basically god and has stopped trying to make films to that effect.

/mumble grumble wish these ones would go in the Netflix thread.

Netflix movies.

I'd be the first to admit it's a tricky area but the Netflix thread is good for stuff that's going to be on Netflix long term, whereas stuff that's only licensed for a short term should probably go in here.

So I'd say:

THE HIGHWAYMEN = NETFLIX THREAD

GHOSTBUSTERS 2 = MOVIE THREAD (Leaving Netflix April 2019.)

But then again, people might like a heads up in the Netflix thread of something that's on there currently, or indeed leaving shortly, but then that information becomes duff in a short period of time and OH IT'S ALL SO FUCKING COMPLICATED.

It was really good this. Didn't Kevin Costner used to be older than Woody Harrelson, though?
