I tried to watch Spy on an aeroplane and I gave up after the first scene when it just seemed to be jokes about her being fat.

Instant Family. I loved it. I mean, I am soft as all getup, so YMMV and all that, but this is a sensitive and funny film about fostering and adoption. And yes, some jokes are occasionally squished in because movie rules say NOW, but I didn't care. Laughed and cried, and I left happy.

Spy is one of the better modern SNL fed comedies I think. Too often these films shoot with no real script and try and catch lightning in a bottle and consequently aren’t very funny for the audience. The cast look like they’ve enjoyed themselves though...

I’ve never heard of this but I want to watch it now! Friends of mine adopted three siblings with a relatively wide age range between them and had an instant family. They’re amazing people.

A good 15-20 years ago my friends (whose family were Japanese) used to get a load of Japanese DVDs brought home by her dad from business trips. We watched them all, and to be honest though a lot were pretty weird, they were also forgettable, but for some reason one is still stuck in my head, and I thought of it whilst watching Ponyo just now as the mother takes a roll of fish cakes from the fridge.

These little pink and white swirly ones.

Image

This film was a... horror? It was weird rather than scary. Anyway, from what I remember the lead character (and I can't even remember if it was a man or a woman) is eating ramen and those little crab cake thingies, and notices the swirling pattern on them, then starts noticing these spirals everywhere, at some point their faces and bodies get distorted into spirals and then I think the whole town gets infested with spiral mania and someone ends up walking up a vertical wall, or something.

It sounds like the kind of :blown: that someone here will have seen, but I've never seen anything about it since.

Zardoz was posting about the manga novel the film I was thinking about over on Twitter at the same time I was asking about the film. Aaaahhhh... a bit weird! It’s called Uzumaki if the film is based on the manga, which it very much seems to be. How weird!

It is indeed. Anyone sleeping in my spare room is welcome to read it, it's sitting on the shelf above the bed.

You probably need to be staying for a fair while to get through it, though.

It looked fucking awful. When the trailer for a film--which is supposed to be selling it to you--is hateful and stupid then it boggles the mind what the full film could be like. It's way past the point when seeing Will Ferrell's name on something makes me assume it'll be terrible. He really need to sort his shit out.

I’m tempted to watch the rest of it just to see if it gets any worse. Will Ferrell‘s daft English accent and mannerisms is utterly baffling though. It’s like no one had the balls to tell him it wasn’t funny, cause he’s such a big star. He was great in SNL and he had his moment in film but he’s gone full fucking Adam Sandler.

Hand on heart I can say I have never understood why people find Will Ferrell funny. I have seen some of his SNL sketches and a few films/TV series and the corners of my mouth have imperceptibly raised up perhaps a nanometre in all that time.

We watched Velvet Buzzsaw last night.

Now, it seemed to be plain awful. Badly scripted, badly acted, sets made of cardboard... BUT... (and hear me out here) I think it’s the TV we are watching it on. The TV where we watched it seems to be a different KIND of TV to ours. It’s veey clear, but it makes everything look ‘odd’. Everything seems heightened. It’s like stage acting requires you to overact somewhat to convert the emotion/gesture to an audience sitting some way away. If you film that same acting at close-up it looks ridiculous unless modified. It was a bit like that. Jake Gyllenhall was acting like a complete hack, yet I’ve seen him act before and he was great. The lead female was awful. The ‘horror’ effects were raspberry sauce. The sets were Crossroads Motel.

But then, everything I watched on that TV was similarly bad.

So: can it be the TV?

If you have all the filters, frame rate speed up, trumotion etc... Switched on, that modern TVs can do, it stops films looking like films, and starts making them look like soap operas.

It's a psychological effect at its heart, as it's different rather than objectively worse. The closer you get to something being real, the less your ability to get past things that don't look quite right.

Yes.

As far as I'm aware-and I'm no expert, mind, this is mainly 2nd hand knowledge - it sounds like frame interpolation.

I had the same issue on our TV. Everything felt like Crossroads (we weren't watching crossroads). I think it was Bamba who advised me that I likely had Sports mode turned on and he was correct.

That’s exactly what it looks like, specifically American soap operas. I said to Russell yesterday that I thought it was something to do with frame rates, as I notice it when I’ve seen bits of US soap operas shown. It all looks very much like the movement is too much of the focus, even down to facial gestures.

Thanks for explaining/confirming because it seemed so unpleasant to watch, and it looked as if the production values were on the floor, and I only didn’t accept that at face value as we had watched a BBC drama we had already seen the first episode of just before that.

Just look for movie mode in the settings or search for the best settings for your individual set but movie mode will turn off the frame interpolation.

It's a really weird effect it has on things though. Fascinating really.

Dunno mate, I can't see it.

I do turn it off whenever Gaywood comes to my house and eventually works his way down his criticism list of my stuff until he gets to the TV ;)

Default setting is it auto plays everything, making it nigh on impossible to browse. That’s why I actively avoid using the PS4 for it, anyway.

That's all clients, apart from the web browser, though. it's not a PS4 thing in particular, and it is really fucking annoying.

Isn’t the (pretty decent) reason it does it so if you decide to watch it there’s no buffering on slow connections?
