After a near miss today on the way to work.

What dash cams do you use or recommend?

I'm not sure but after watching some uk dashcam compilations it seems that if you have a dashcam and someone pulls out somewhere up the road the thing you must do is accelerate hard only to then brake and scream "STUPID FUCKING CUNT" while spraying greggs pastie all over the windscreen and then submit your clip.

They’d have a myocardial infarction in no time if they lived in central London with all the bloody Uber’s and black cabs behaving like they’re the only fuckers on the road

I've got a NextBase 412GW and that does the job really well.

Just don't forget to turn on the screensaver setting (set it to 10 seconds) which turns the screen off after 10 seconds, as having the screen active while you're driving is illegal.

What are the connection options for that one, Gaz? We were looking to get one, but the cigarette charger thingy in the car seems to be bust.

Those cigarette ports... Does anyone ever actually use them to light a cigarette, ever? Don't they need a little pully-out bit for that? Cars don't have those now, do they?

Not really, no. They're just a 12v socket but they're still called a cigarette lighter just because that's what they always used to be.

I thought this must be the case. Can you even legally smoke in a car now?

Hopefully we can find a dash cam that runs off of USB as I think we may have a billion USB ports in the car.

You can plug it in to the 12V socket, but I paid Halfords £20 (might have been £30) to hardwire it into the car, so it starts up automatically when the car's switched on and turns off when the car goes off (or 30 seconds after, specifically)

That way it doesn't take up the 12V socket, and all the cabling is kept up nice and tidy in the headliner :)

The "hardwire kit" for the NextBase camera is £20 on top of the camera price, though.

I think the cigarette lighter is an option for most new cars, but the majority just don't bother. It's a bit if of a legacy connector, but a very handy way of supplying 12vDC to stuffs.

It’s still legal to smoke in a car if you’re on your own. It is illegal to smoke in a car if you have children/minors on board. No idea if you’re allowed to smoke with consenting adults on board.

You are, unless it's a cab or a company vehicle

Not that this seems to have stopped anyone round here...

Yeah, it’s up there with ‘using your phone while driving’ for the way it’s been embraced by the law abiding population

Another vote for Nextbase for me. I think it's a 4-something or other that's about 4 years old now.
I have mine hardwired in with a piggyback fuse which is easy enough if you are comfortable removing trim to hide cables behind, but for £30 just pay Halfords to fit it.

Episode 23 of project Binky on YouTube had a good review for one, can't remember what it's called though so you'll have to watch it.

I've had a Nextbase 312GW for about 18 months and am very happy with it. I got it with a deal from Halfords that included a free polarizing filter that for which they supposedly charge £20 and which works very well, when I remember to adjust it correctly. It can run from the USB socket or the 12volt socket. I have a Tecknet 4 socket adapter in the 12 volt that powers the camera, sat nav, a cable to charge my phone and a spare to charge my Bluetooth earpiece if needed. I don't have it hard wired in because I use both for my work van and my car.

I don't bother recording sound as all you'd hear most of the time is me singing along with my tunes, but here there would have definitely been a "kinell" when this guy's indicator came on.

I thought it was going to be the first one and nearly squeezed a button into my chair.

:DD As I knew what it was going to show I hadn't thought about it like that. Its like a 90 second thriller. Builds suspense, then you think it's OK and then, just when you're not expecting it, disaster is narrowly averted.
