Did anyone watch Inside Europe: Ten Years of Turmoil on Monday?

It left me thoroughly depressed on several levels.

1) How reasonable Europe's arguments have been for the last several years, let alone post-referendum
2) How childishly the UK has behaved as a direct result of the Tory's own self-interests for YEARS. The EU has been suffering this bullshit from us for a long time.
3) I felt sorry for Cameron in the end because of the utter dim-witted, self-serving cuntishness of the party he is sworn leader of. He was stuck in a hard place.
4) Euro-sceptics have been tussling for this for DECADES, yet in all those years they haven't developed a viable alternative plan.
5) There were no concessions the EU could make that would have stopped the referendum. The only acceptable result for hardliners was the removal of the UK from the EU, end of.

Childish pricks, the lot of them.

That said, it's interesting, very well made, if inordinately infuriating. And Donald Tusk is a dude.

I did, or at least, half watched it. I didn't feel sorry for Cameron, though - it brought back to mind his empty gesture (and strategic error) of going back to Europe to renegotiate, which is what started the whole thing. He failed, as he was always going to, and that set us on the path to a referendum, and him to losing it. And the shot of Farage saying "did you see Dave's face?" (after he'd been turned down by the EU) was interesting in showing the chummy 'mates in a front room' lying behind UKIP, but also the skills (such as they are) that F. has.

But the whole basis for it all: that we need to renegotiate based on the idea that people come here and go straight onto benefits when no figures were produced to suggest this is a problem. So that was dog-whistle "they come over 'ere..!" bullshit, which might be helped if the Tories in any way believed education was a good thing and tried telling people what's what (see also May's "queue jumpers" crap). And, as I understand it, there's provision within EU law for 'us' to put restrictions on what people can claim, on what terms they are here and so on. Knowledge of which, again, isn't passed on to people. So the whole start of the thing was a load of cack, and Cameron could have handled it better.

So I suppose I could feel sorry for Cameron within the parameters of him following in a long line, assuming that everything they do much be pitched at some great mass of people who can't learn, and whose every prejudice must be indulged.

Perhaps pity was too strong a sentiment on my part, but I certainly felt myself empathising with him for the ceaseless demands of different masters he was constantly trying to placate, especially those needle-headed ganglions in his party.

That said, that's what you sign up for as PM.

Hang on everyone, breaking news, crisis cancelled!

This rich old white man has the answers, and they seem to involve smuggling and putting apples on 'straw-strewn shelves'.

I love this. Can I have a go...

WE SMOKED 40 A DAY FOR THE LAST 40 YEARS AND IT NEVER DID ME NO HARM. All my friends, however, are dead of the cancers.

but how can it not be, I mean, really, I just don't understand. How can anyone feel that being in the situation where we have to re-release wartime cookbooks is a /good/ thing??

Middle aged and middle/upper class. I doubt that the good old days were that good, I imagine it's just selective memory if you think otherwise.

The version of Britain that Brexiters hark for never existed in reality.

Depressing but brilliant commentary from Chris Grey.

Whatever happens now we're kind of fucked. The EU and the wider world just see us as a basket case, even if a second referendum resulted in REMAIN it wouldn't really solve much, we'd still be seen as an unstable and paranoid state, who wants to do business with that?

Brexit has truly broken an awful lot.

I don't know, we're hardly the only country with anti-EU rumblings. I think there are probably quite a few people across Europe who readily sympathise with the sensible folk here.

No one could have predicted this.

And in other news, cunt who said he'd have 40 trade deals ready for 'one minute after Brexit' and has managed to get, erm, ZERO trade deals ready, reassures us that we'll 'survive', because our lives were threatened by EU membership previously, of course.

I'm convinced I've had stress headaches over it all. I've also made magnificent speeches pulling apart the weaknesses of my MP's speeches, then had to leave the shower and get dressed. To think that 10 years ago I was getting worked up about identity cards...

Don't worry about it. Once the climate catastrophe kicks in properly we'll be nostalgic for the days when Brexit seemed like a big deal.

Not me, I’ve got far more immediate issues to worry about. We elect politicians to do the worrying on our behalf.

The referendum was a way to delegate the worrying back to us. And subsequently to delegate the blame and guilt. It's all our fault.

This is all fine.

Why don't a substantial number of MPs, from all parties, just grow a fucking spine and publicly come out against Brexit and forcefully make the case that it needs to be stopped. They need to stop hiding behind this 'will of the people' bollocks.

The Americans want the Good Friday agreement to be upheld and do not want to see Dublin fucked over by, say, the UK government forcing a hard border by refusing the backstop at the last minute -- a policy it previously committed to in writing.

I haven't dug into this but what's the likely outcome in terms of the Irish question? The EU presumably, and rightly, won't wear anything but a proper customs border between north and south Ireland, because otherwise it's a massive loophole for just chucking whatever we want into the EU without having to follow any of their regulations or meeting their standards. The backstop, as I understand it, just kicks that can further down the road. I don't understand how this could possibly end with anything except a hard border, at which point Ireland loses it's collective mind and we're back to bombs in shopping centres. Am I missing something, or is it genuinely as inevitable as it seems to me?

I don't know who he was, but I just heard a genius* on the radio, who had solved the border problem. Just use technology. Companies complete a declaration when they ship goods, from the comfort of their office, and that's all received centrally. No need to set up any infrastructure.

Admittedly, he wasn't asked why smugglers wouldn't use it - perhaps really he is on Moore's side, and planning this as a way to just run any and all goods through from Ireland into the UK. He was also asked where in the world this was used, without physical infrastructure - as, surely, say, Scandinavian countries would be very interested in simplifying things. He agreed that this was sort of how the EU works.

*Hmm
