Pac Attack on the Snes <13.50>

And, bargain alert... Mega Drive, Mega CD 1, Power base converter <60>

This was sold to me today as not working but I've got it home and it all works perfectly as far as I can tell! It's a bargain at the power base converter goes for about £40 on it's own and when I plugged the Mega CD in, there was a game in it which the shop keeper clearly didn't know about. It's Final Fight which I reckon I'll get about £20 for on ebay as I've already got it.

Oh yeah... and I'm definitely not spending anything on games in January.

Indeed. Although, annoyingly, I've just realised that actually - I can't do that, because my phone has no headphone port. Luckily I've got an old Android phone or two that still have a 3.5mm jack ;)

Finally got round to buying a memory card for the Switch so I've been having a browse around the eShop; damn there's a lot in there now compared to when I last looked. Unfortunately, there's a lot of shovelware and overpriced stuff so all I bought was <5.99> Out Run - Sega Ages.

I’ve been playing some of this recently. I love the art-style and the music and what not but the gameplay loop just isn’t doing fuck all for me at all. It’s o-k to pick up and knock about for 20 minutes but I’ve got bored after that.

Aye, I’d heard that - that’s why I’ve waited until it’s on sale :)

And yeah, you're right - I'm finding it surprisingly annoying and I've only been playing it for half an hour. I suspect that's the point, though.

My biggest problem with it, I’ve found, is that it wants to be a puzzle game but it imposes no limitations on what you do (except in the bar challenges) (mind you, I’ve only done about 25 levels so whether this changes later I don’t know). So it says “6 shots to clear” but if you use 7 shots or even 60, you’ve still completed the level and it counts towards the final tally - you just don’t get the very tiny yellow symbol to say you’ve done the level within the shot limit. Without enforcing the challenge (by, say, not counting it as complete) each level has no challenge apart from that you impose on yourself. Personally I’ve not been compelled to even aim for the shot limit except in a rare few levels I thought were quite fun. And the shot challenge isn’t the only challenge for each level (there’s pot all the balls, complete the level on time and no faults, for anyone who hasn’t played it) so what challenge should you be interested in? All of them at the same time, just one, a couple? It’s just so difficult to care.

As Monica once said “Rules help control the fun” and she wasn’t wrong.

Eloquently put, and you're absolutely right. In hindsight, I was playing a few levels yesterday and was basically just smacking the balls around with gay abandon (Title - Ed.) because there's no consquences for failure.

If it forced me to plan out my strategy more, that would be better. But I suppose that's difficult in a game that has what appear to be random elements, i.e. some balls that run away from you randomly when you approach.

They're not actually any better than the heroes you can choose from for free (one is objectively worse than the free choices, and one is sort of on the level), but I really like this game and wish to support it with real cash monies.

I played the open beta and the reviews are already out (and they’re very positive apart from the layer of modern gaming bullshit which can be easily ignored). Plus it wasn’t £50 ;)
