I remember resting my 32" Samsung TV precariously to play Ikaruga in TATE mode...

I was still shit at it.

Really being delayed on the build. First I got messed around over the Bitspower block. That ended well, however, when I found this.

Image

Saving myself nearly £100 in the process. It looks very similar, just needs some RGB love added which I can do. Then this has been lost in the post.

Image

And so on. I really shouldn't complain, because it's saving me from witnessing FO76. Can't fuckin' play it with no PC to play it on :D

I am also juggling a build for my mate's kid. Going to surprise him with a full custom water loop :D more to do, oh joy lol.

Yup it's RGB. It's reversible too, with speed (hard) surface on one side and soft on the other.

Because i'm an idiot with no self control and a job again, i've ordered myself an RX580 graphics card, to replace my aging GTX960.
The 590 has just been released, which meant a reasonably good deal could be had on the 580 (£170).

I only have a 1080p monitor, so that should easily handle everything at full shiny in that rez, I expect.

There's that too.

I mainly bought it because I was ill and at home bored yesterday, which is always bad for the bank balance...

It's a great 1080p card, goes toe-to-toe with the 6GB 1060 and costs quite a bit less.

Just don't get one with the reference AMD cooler on it. (You didn't do that, did you?)

This is the one. Only 4GB rather than 8GB, but I figured that would be ok for 1080p. (My current 960 is only 2GB)

That'll be fine, it's just that the reference AMD cooler is alarmingly bad.

Well... that's annoying.

New card arrives! Along with the new power supply as mine is only 400w, so not quite enough juice.
Wipe all the drivers, shut down the machine, open her up... hmmm... the motherboard power connector doesn't fit. Turns out my machine has a non-standard ATX power connector, so I need a £3 adapter to get it to work.
Can't even try the card out with the old power supply, as it only has a 6 pin connector and the new card needs an 8 pin.

Adapter has been ordered, hopefully it will arrive before xmas!

The SFF Dells have a miniaturized connector, but I've never seen them anywhere else.

Yup, it's a lenovo desktop, and they like to do crazy shit like that. Which I suspect is their way to try and stop people updating, so they have to buy a new machine with them.

This is what it looks like. Box on the left.

I've got a 580 4gb (Sapphire Pulse) coming tomorrow for my mate's kid. I'm building him a gaming PC. They are going so cheap now mining has crashed (I paid £95 for it). It's not new obviously but does have a year warranty left. He's getting a full custom loop too.

My rig is getting there. I just need the hose to arrive from China (you can't get the size I need in black in the UK). Once that comes I should be able to finish the PC. I bought a new water block and it was out of stock, so I found another one.

Image

I've also fitted an EVGA power link so the power cables are on the end of the card, and made a plate to fill the gap between it and the card. I also had to modify the vertical bracket kit, as the card was hitting the RAM and thumb nuts for the water block on the CPU.

Image

Image

The good news is I have now created an entire slot behind it for small cards (sound card, things like that) which I can use on a X1 riser cable. No idea why Cooler Master designed it the way they did. I mean, it's a mod you shouldn't have to mod it.

Been working away on my mate's kid's PC. Managed to get him a free mobo, free CPU, cheap ram and a RX 580 for £95.

Image

Seems legit.

Image

He was saving for a Ryzen 2200G but DDR4 has made it very difficult for him. I sold him two Corsair Vengeance red 2133mhz 4gb sticks for £20. What he doesn't know yet is that I have a full custom loop in a box I am going to fit to the CPU for him. He got this case.

Image

So it should look nice.

Is that a tissue under the waterblock?

I've never understood liquid cooling. Especially now Ryzen isn't even limited by temps when it comes to frequencies attainable.

Even in the best case scenario you get maybe 10% extra on the clocks.

It's not Ryzen dude. It's a 14 core Broadwell E (so think 5820k etc). I had it under a 120mm AIO before (yeah I know, stupid) and whenever it loaded up more than 4 cores you could literally smell the dust burning on the rad. I had the GPU under a 240 Bitspower rad, so decided to ditch the Triad case for more space (for more cooling) and stick in another 240.

I didn't do it for clocks I did it for silence. Currently those 120mm BQ fans are running on 35% power so around 4v, and the temps at idle are ambient.

Ed. If you never understood liquid cooling then think of being able to run a Titan XP at 2150mhz 24/7 without it ever going over 50c. That's about 15% more performance than air cooling, but permanent.

Ed2. Yeah it's tissue. You put it there when leak testing to check for leaks/spotting :)

Ed3

Changed to an actual camera. Still work to do, so not ordered lights and backdrop yet.

Image

Sadly when I pulled the masking it took off some paint. I was really mad, then realised I had loads of touching up to do any way in areas I missed etc.

Image

Still very annoying though. Wiring is now pretty much finished.

Well I won't need one at my mother's, that's for sure.

Image

Just got that (Vega 64 Red Devil) from a mate who was into mining. Will make a nice upgrade from the Fury X I have been struggling with (VRAM limitations). I would never normally buy cards that have been mined on but I know the guy I got it from so decided to buy it. I just have to hope it fits in the triad case with the 4590 in it. Bloody good thing I fitted a 1200w power supply to that rig, really.

Didn't even need to bother with a Christmas tree this year.

Image

It's nearly finished now. Just need to remove the masking and paper and put on one last panel. Then for my mother's house I have this (incredibly ropy pic warning)

Image

I got the board (some HP weird thing) CPU (4590s Haswell) and 8gb ram free. Well chuffed with it, will make a lovely replacement for my venerable Fury X.

Got my Vega rig all dialled in now. No pics, as it's just the same case as before (the triad one). Vega is a beast in BF1, really does run it very well.

So the next thing I wanted to do with my Xmas cash was upgrade the monitor. I originally bought a second hand (and quite old) 1680x1050 Apple screen.

Image

But wanted something possibly higher res and more modern. A few of the guys on a gaming forum I frequent had ditched their big monitors (something I don't want, or need to do given I have two machines) and gone back to smaller monitors with stupid high refresh rates. Mostly 144 and 160, saying it made single player FPS better. So I went on the hunt (I should never do this...) and ended up finding this.

Image

On sale for £250, down from just over £400. It's 240hz, 1ms. Absolutely nuts I can't wait to play Doom on it :D

Still working on my main machine. Few little bits left to do, but can wait til after Christmas now as I won't be here :) I did upgrade the RAM in it and get it all finished up software wise.

ATX power adapter finally arrived, so i'm now typing on a forum that is powered by AMD 580 graphics power, it's much faster to render the characters and shit, or something.

I had to remove the backplate as it was too close to the memory slots and I couldn't get the graphics card to seat. I'm sure that is totally fine and won't cause loads of problems in the future...

Not convinced. We need proof, you need to run an FPS counter in the corner and see if it's affected when you scroll through a long thread.

And then upload the video to youtube, natch

You know, I think that looks kinda neat in an OTT way... I wouldn't want it on my equipment, but I can appreciate it in a way.

Can they flash, pulse or do any other colour changey stuff? Can the lights be turned off for when it isn't party time?

Also, what's that tune playing in the background?

Yeah I wouldn't want it like this at home. Mine at home are computer controlled, which I can do as I wish with. These are controlled by a remote. You can cycle through the different patterns and colours, set solid colours, set them to pulse and etc. You can turn them off too, and even slow down and turn off the fans. Which probably wouldn't be a great idea haha.

The tune in the background. D'you know, as stupid as it sounds I don't know. Stupid because I know exactly who the MC is (Stevie Hyper D, he died in 1998) but I don't know if the song is his or not. I know he did a couple, usually with a DJ.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevie_Hyper_D

That's the guy MCing in it. What I used to do was sit and play my music all day. However, instead of working out how to do playlists (I never did bother) I found myself having to DJ all day which is tiring. Like, one track at a time. So what I've done now is retire one of my old phones and I connect it to a JBL speaker at home and listen to http://247drumandbass.com and a few others (that is what I was listening to there in the video). So today whilst this PC was apart I connected my Blackberry to it and put the radio on :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A9-uZy6vJo

^ there you go, tune IDed.

The line disappeared after about 30 minutes. I've had a screen go like this before so doubtless it'll be back once it's been turned off for a few hours, and will probably get worse.

It's under warranty until November so I'm not in any sort of panic about it. What I might do is buy a better one, wait for it be delivered, and then return this one for a refund, so I don't have to be without a decent screen.

Looks like a contact has gone on the connector.

Lone - don't worry about that too much. The one I had went rusty inside from the summer heat (small room, me sweating ollies). Which was what caused it to fail. Oh, and I kicked it numerous times because it was attached to the end of my bed :D

And today it's fine, even from a cold start. Go figure.

I finally got a chance to check Nvidia's new "Free for all Gsync" driver today. It was released on the 15th. I did, once upon a time, have a 4k G sync monitor but it was too premature a purchase on my behalf because there wasn't sufficient single GPU grunt in existence at that stage. I did like G sync, though, as it definitely kept things smooth.

I now have two monitors, both Freesync. I have my HP Omen 1440p with the Bang and Olufsen speakers and a 240hz Alienware 24" 1080p. Obviously there is no way I can test it on my Alienware monitor because I am using a Vega 64 with Freesync. However, I paid £240 for that (the Alienware) on sale and the G sync version was nearly £600. What I wanted to see was if G sync would recognise and detect my 32" Omen. And...

Teh yays. I am glad now that I bought a "media" panel with Freesync, and didn't again pay a hefty premium for G sync. I tested it out earlier and it worked fabulously. I can now finally stop using Adaptive (not that it was that bad tbh....). Chuffed.

My monitor is Freesync, I might give that driver a go myself. The 1080 is more 4K capable than I was expecting it to be, but for example in Sniper Elite 4 at 4K I am getting some dips down into the 50s and high 40s, so a functioning Freesync implementation would be splendid.

Mind you, only Nvidia would rebrand Freesync as 'G-Sync Compatible' - they're such wankers.

First shot I get at ditching them for AMD, I'm outta there.

G-Sync Compatible isn’t a rebranding of Freesync. It merely signifies that that specific Freesync monitor has been tested by nVidia to work with a G-Sync card. There’s only 12 of those so far. Other Freesync monitors should work, but haven’t specifically been tested, and I guess there must be edge cases where there can be issues.

All this shit goes away with HDMI 2.2, by the way, which bakes variable refresh rates into the entire standard.

But isn't that just Freesync then? The whole kerfuffle about G-Sync was that the monitor needed the (expensive) G-Sync module in it, if 'G-Sync' works with a Freesync monitor, then to my mind that's just rebranded Freesync.
