Former Tory MP for Oxford West & Abingdon is now a peer and a junior minister in Health. Didn't think much of her back in the day, still don't now.

39 is going to really lower the average age of the Upper House, and gives me some hope, however.

A quick google suggests that she has largely the same set of horrible views as most of the other fuckers in there despite being twenty years younger. Went to the same university etc. Same old fucking old.

The rumours I've heard around her 2010 win centred on the circulation by indirect organisations of US-style 'baby killing' leaflets regarding Evan Harris' support for stem cell research and abortion . I've never been able to get this satisfactorily confirmed as although there is a sample here, it's not clear if she or the local party were involved. The way she tied herselves in knots over gay marriage suggests where she felt her support lay, however.

EDIT: In the interests of fairness I'll add that she has repeatedly denied any connection.

My Local MP got made a Sir in the NY honours, I can't think what he could have done to cause that...

https://www.garystreeter.co.uk/news/bre ... ahead-vote

Quote:
Here is a summary of my position on Brexit as we approach the end game:

I voted to remain, but the people voted to leave in 2016. My constituency voted to leave by a margin of 55/45*
We said we would honour the outcome of the referendum, and so we must
With me this is an article of faith and non-negotiable. We have to honour the vote to leave the EU
It is for Parliament to decide how we leave
I want us to honour the 2016 vote without crashing the economy, which is why I am backing the PM’s deal

Under the deal, we leave the EU, Customs Union, Single Market, CFP and CAP, all by the end of 2020, or if we have to enter it the further backstop arrangement. I am perfectly happy with the way in which the backstop can be brought to an end. It provides time for businesses to adjust and gives us the right to enter our own trade deals. All perfectly sensible
I am relaxed about the nature of the future trading relationship so long as it is as frictionless as possible
I do not support a second referendum, as this would not help to finally resolve this matter, and would prolong the deep division in our country.
I do not want us to leave without a deal because of the possible disruption to the local and national economy.
I will therefore support the deal and strongly back the PM in her efforts to deliver on the wishes of the British people
Opinion in my constituency remains deeply divided, but I am elected to exercise my own judgement, which I am doing.

(My bolding)

*I was under the impression that it was a remain constituency, but all the information that I can find defines the result of the "South Hams" without separating the parliamentary constituencies of South West Devon and Totnes so I don't know where he got that info from.

Maybe I just too cynical

Well, that's nice that he is relaxed about it. Nothing to worry about then, it'll all be fine.

It appears that not only do our government include anyone who do one hour of paid work a week as employed, they now include those that do “unpaid family work” also. No wonder the employment figures look so good!

I miss Cavey.

Lords By-Election! - 16 candidates, 259 votes. Lord Reay won this round of the top-of-the-toffs.

I'm starting to get the feeling that even their Lordships think the hereditary election scheme is a bit odd:

Lord Grocott wrote:
This particular by-election, in which the whole House was the electorate, was one of 15 established under the 1999 Act to enable those hereditary Peers who were Deputy Speakers at the time to remain in the House, but after 20 years many of the original 15 are no longer Deputy Speakers, and the person who wins the by-election is not expected to become a Deputy Speaker so, to summarise, in these Deputy Speaker by-elections the departing Member does not have to be a Deputy Speaker and the person replacing him does not have to be a Deputy Speaker either. You know it makes sense.

The current scandals in Virginia are fascinating. The governor, the guy who'd replace him, and the guy who'd replace the replacement all facing calls to go. Two of the three involve wearing blackface, whilst the other is a sexual assualt affair.

BBC report.

But a decent approach would surely be for Berger’s party members – and indeed all of us – to show solidarity against Berger’s antisemitic harassment (which we should do whether Berger is in Labour ot not), and for Berger to commit to not join a new party and thereby attempt to destroy her own party. Is that not reasonable?

That last paragraph sits really uncomfortably with me.

Implication there is that Jones considers AS in Labour acceptable as long as it’s not aimed at sufficiently loyal party members.

Me too. It would only be reasonable if the same was asked of all Labour MPs, not just ones who've complained about anti-semitism.

Yesterday, Lord Berkeley (Labour) tried to get the Other Place to move with the times:

Lord Berkeley wrote:
My Lords, I am sure that the Minister will be aware that her colleague Jo Johnson wrote a circular letter in the autumn to local authorities, praying in aid—about penalties for persons committing nuisances while riding on footpaths—that people shall not,

“tether any horse, ass, mule, swine, or cattle, on any highway, so as to suffer or permit the tethered animal to be thereon”.

This came from the Highway Act 1835. Is it not about time this legislation was updated?

Meanwhile, in the House of Commons, Bercow is filled with the joys of spring:

Mr Speaker wrote:
It is always pleasing to see a happy Member. The hon. Member for Bishop Auckland (Helen Goodman) is convulsed with mirth. She is in a state of almost uncontrollable hysteria. Well, I hope she is very happy. I do not know what it is that has amused her, but it is good to know that she is a happy spirit in the Chamber.

A similarly tortured attempt at difference-splitting was provided by freelance Labour press officer Owen Jones in the Guardian. After defending the no-confidence move in principle, Jones concluded with the same quid-pro-quo as McDonnell: "A decent approach would surely be for Berger's party members - and indeed all of us – to show solidarity against Berger's anti-semitic harassment (which we should do whether Berger is in Labour or not), and for Berger to commit to not join a new party and thereby attempt to destroy her own party. Is that not reasonable?"

This implied exchange – we'll defend you against racist attacks if you make a declaration of loyalty – ought to strike any self-respecting Labour supporter as obscene. But the tolerance for obscenity among Labour supporters is a source of constant wonder.

I think she should be allowed back, and taken good care of. It's the compassionate and caring thing to do. People make terrible errors of judgement at the age of fifteen, and it'd be humanely wrong to not make sure things are ok for her on her return.

The counterpoint to that is that she doesn't seem to regret what she or IS did, and is only wanting to return because they lost.

I don't think I've reached a decision one way or the other yet.

I'm not sure if she should come back or not, but her baby should be allowed to live here, so that pretty much seals it for me.

Maybe I'm being overly harsh but compared to what the people in Syria suffered at the hands of these Holy fucking cunts I can't muster much sympathy for anyone who chose to ally themselves with that particular cause. She went over there to help destroy an entire country and support mass murder. And she still thinks it was right. She should be brought back to face the consequences and the kid should get the chance to live a life free from a mother who is a sick, twisted piece of shit.

Yeah that's what I'd heard too. Can't blame her for wanting to give her next child a better chance over here.

My thoughts are this. Murdoch who owns the Times wants out of the EU because of the tax legislation that’s coming in April 1 this year. Why would you go look for this person and make her a front page story five or so weeks before we crash out unless you wanted all the idiots to start frothing at the mouth about immigration again?
