83. 2-bit Cowboy: Gameboy style retro platformer. The controls are generally decent but it's only got 10 levels and they're all such similar rearrangements of the same parts that you could be forgiven for thinking the entire thing is procedurally generated. Also, you can actually finish each one in about a minute of you don't explore a bit to do the optional 'collect/kill X of each Y' quests. Which might be fair enough if all you got from the quests wasn't cash that can be spent on utterly pointless visual changes to your character. It's all incredibly half-baked.
84. A Normal Lost Phone: you 'find' the phone of someone that seems to have gone missing--judging by the most recent text messages--and you snoop around in their stuff in order to piece the story together. A nice concept and the fake phone OS is very well put together but some of the puzzles are stupid and it's a very short thing once you get past those. On the upside it's quite a good story told in a unique way and I'm hoping the sequel (which I also picked up as both are cheap right now) will have some more depth to it.

For the most part excellent. with the following annoyances:

The character you're controlling in the overworld is a small disk. Rather than the Mario which is always following it. Why?
The afore mentioned character is also really shit as a character.
Some of the later missions veer into random luck as to whether you'll have forward progress reversed or not. This is a bit frustrating.
Exploration is made difficult be some samey levels and dark souls esque entwined map design leading to just a mess at times. and the inability to use the camera freely to look around.
Escort. Missions.

I didn’t mind the escort missions because the escortee is under your full control. And they genuinely feel different as you are optimising for distance.

Totally agree regarding the overworld exploration though. That was the one bum note for me. It’s not that interesting and it frustrates my desire to maximise my XP before moving on. This is why I’m stalled somewhere around the start of world four.

1. Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) - finished story + Pink Floyd level + over 500 power moons
2. SUPERHOT VR (Rift/PC) - finished story mode
3. Human: Fall Flat (PC) - finished all levels
4. Golf Story (Switch) - finished story mode
5. Vib Ribbon (PS1) - finished silver and bronze modes
6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade) - finished game
7. There is no Game (PC) - did not finish game as there is no game
8. Football Manager: the Human Match Engine - scored a goal and won the game
9. PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS (iOS) - winner winner chicken dinner
10. Bloodborne (PS4) - completed main game (slug ending) + The Old Hunters DLC
11. Fallout: New Vegas (PC) - completed main game (independent ending) + some DLC

Have I really not finished a game since April? Yikes. Anyway, eight years after release and after buying it for the second time five years ago, I finally played this. "Only" put about 40 hours into it, but enough for the main story, most side quests and one or two of the DLC packs. It's just more Fallout 3 but in a different setting isn't it? I enjoyed it, but my does it look ropey these days (not that it was the best looking game on release either).

I enjoyed most of it but some of the DLC was garbage and I was quite happy to finish it, as I was getting bored by the end. Skyrim next (in about 3 years).

To begin with, the escort missions weren't bad, but then you end up with missions where there are opponents who can move back your character more than they can move forward. On the turn they spawn (and they spawn every turn) It's a case of if you're unlucky, there's nothing you can do.

2 missing power orb chests aside, I've now completed everything except for the 4 ultimate challenges. Those are... not my high point of the game.

It did come with the dlc mind, so may have to try that.

84. A Normal Lost Phone
85. Another Lost Phone: pretty much the same deal as A Normal Lost Phone. An engaging story and very nice 'phone simulator' UI but some of the puzzles were just annoyingly obscure and required a stupid level of data mining of the owner's data to work out a particular passcode or whatever.
86. Nier: Automata: sad robot simulator

I'm actually still playing this technically, but only to mop up any interesting side quests I missed because I've already knocked of all four of the proper endings.

It's a bit of a mixed bag. There's certainly a load of imagination gone into it but the combat is serviceable at best. They've built a relatively engaging melee combat engine but it's so rare that you can actually use it because as soon as you're fighting more than one enemy at a time it just makes so much more sense to shoot at them (or sidestep the combat entirely and easily hack your way through everything the game throws at you). So the minute to minute enemy engagements become a bit rote and lacking to my mind, though never actually boring enough to put you off. The dialogue and weird shit the game throws at you are definitely the highlights either way.

The environment design is decent but it's hella fucking ugly in places and could easily be a PS3 port if the character models and animations weren't so well done (leaving out the juvenile bullshit baked into A2 and 2Bs design of course). There's actually a recently released fan-made texture pack that attempts to pretty it up a little bit but even doing that wouldn't negate the fact that everything's constructed out of grey boxes. Again it doesn't massively detract from the overall experience, but it does nothing to add to it. There's basically a feel of 'budget' about the entire implementation.

All of which sounds a bit negative but I've spent over 30 hours on this which is a lot for me on a single game and I've definitely enjoyed my time with it. I'd argue that the second playthrough is a mostly unnecessary because it only deviates from the first one in a couple of places; but having the hacking ability prevented me getting utterly honked off at having to repeat a couple of the bullshit boss encounters. Side-bar: whomever designed the Hegel boss fight needs a massive kick in the genitals. Also, the third playthrough isn't really that; it's actually just the rest of the game but gated off behind the credits for no real reason. As long as you go in knowing that you're not going to miss out though.

So, yeah, definitely fun and different from other stuff doing the rounds in terms of it's structure, but not actually the brain-fucking essential experience that people make out.

I really am scratching my head as to why I replayed this all the way through three years ago until almost the end and then never finished it. But I have now. The ending was good, but now I can't remember the first three-quarters of the game. Maybe I should play it again...

Bloody good this and criminally underrated, thanks, no small part, to that awful, awful, awful E3 fake playthrough with the people pretending to play.

Anyway, what is it: it’s a fun third person shooter for 4 (count em) people. It’s military and stuff but it doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s got more in common with the Just Cause series but instead of blowing shit up you can coordinate attacks on compounds stealthily. Or blow the fuck out of everyone and awaken the vipers best. Usually the latter. It’s kinda like GTA too with a massive open world, jacking vehicles and the Bolivian army called Unidad chasing you ala the po-po in GTA. You even get a 4 star rating for max unidad action. And those bastards are relentless chasing you over the map and all sorts. It’s good.

It’s got great customisation options to make your military badass look like he’s fallen into a pile of A-TACS. Or you can have a ginger beard. The beard options are pretty great from lumberjack to the chevron. Ok, there’s only six, really.

Anyway, Just Cause and GTA mixed with military gadgets and airdrops and shooting and FOUR (count em) player coop. I played it with two people and I desperately wanted to get four in cause I reckon that’d be awesome as plans are well executed and then get completely fucked up as a bullet flies by someone’s face and alerts the entire base.

I got it for the stellar price of a tenner. I reckon if you could convince 3 others to pick it up then you’d have a reet good time all round.

I think I’ve played about 50 hours and I’ve got two (free) DLC missions to do so there’s plenty of value for money.

Just in case you didn’t believe me. And if you kill THE PREDATOR you get his mask and his heat vision with the distorted voices thing it does to muck around in the rest of the game. It’s fucking groovy.

Yeah, a demo for an open world game probably isn’t going to be the best. It’s good though. It’s a much better full game.

Well that's my second game of the year completed now.. i'm on a roll.

Rather than play the game on a small-screen GBA, I used the Retro Freak so I could play it on a nice big screen. I found out that the GBA emulation isn't perfect though and some screens of the game have some pretty horrendous slowdown, which you might think would make things easier, but it made boss fights that bit harder. Brilliant game though.

87. Iconoclasts : It's generally pretty good but I'm not sure it's accurate to call it a Metroidvania as the only time you revisit earlier areas tends to be fleetingly and for story related pointless fetch quest reasons. Other negative thoughts: the craftable extra powers seemed to be completely pointless (and a load of the blueprints I collected were never even made available for me to craft, no idea what was going on there); it went on far too long at ten hours and even right at the end I was still constantly fucking around during combat trying to make sure I had the right gun on at any given time.

Those things aside, if you're after a generally well made 2d platformer with decent puzzles and decent boss fights then you won't go far wrong with it.

88. Orwell season 1: you're a government operative of sorts investigating ongoing acts of terrorism in a fictional country only ever referred to as The Nation. This takes the form of mining people's websites, phone calls, text messages, etc looking for connections between various people of interests trying to build a case against the guilty and rule out the innocent.

The actual gameplay boils down to reading through the various sources presented to you and pulling out highlighted text for presentation to the system so there's not a lot to it mechanically, but the story's well drawn and then characters are generally believable so you get drawn in pretty quickly. The subtleties generally come when you're presented with conflicting evidence and you need to decide what to mark as ignored and what to upload, as that will directly impact exactly how the people involved will get treated.

I assumed it would go in hard on the 'surveillance is bad' angle but it as your character potentially instrumental in stopping people get murdered its position isn't as cut and dried as that. Ultimately you're playing a story with a few chances to influence it so if that's not your bag you won't enjoy it. If you're into that kind of thing though it's certainly a unique and interesting way of presenting a narrative (though it's entirely reading and clicking shit so your level of tolerance may vary).

46) Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom (PS4)

Quick Jap Facts: Ni means 2, Kuni means Country and No means No, AMIRITE ladies?

I wouldn’t say I was spaffing up the walls with excitement when I was playing it but I was thoroughly enjoying myself and got quite engrossed micromanaging my team of 3 killers, my army of super deformed anime heads and building a kingdom. I was levelling up my characters, levelling up my weapons, levelling up my spells, levelling up my armour, levelling up my buildings, levelling up my generals and so on. There’s a few bits going on then and the gameplay loop of going around knocking heads together so I can go off and start knocking bigger heads together is just plenty fun.

It’s not the hardest JRPG in the world - and I consider myself an expert having played AT LEAST 5 in my entire life - which is why I played it on hard difficultly and still managed to clock it in some 33 hours. There’s an expert setting above hard and if I could go back in time I’d probably have shoved it on expert right from the start. So it’s not the longest JRPG either - and you can take my word for it cause I’ve played at least 5 of them - but there was still plenty to do after I’d finished it so if you’re side quest inclined or wanted to build the biggest city or army you could then there’s a fair few hours of post-game stuff to do.

But Sat what about the negatives, I hear no one ask? The story is fairly rote stuff for these types of games. Ghosts and spirits and powers and end of the world and mixed motivations for doing stuff aplenty. I did laugh at the amount of times a person was forgiven for doing some unspeakable act because a baddy told them to do it. “Oh it was that naughty fella telling you to kill my dad and also the King? And then you did it. You’re forgiven even though you murdered my pops simply because you haven’t got the will power not to slash his throat with a knife. But regicide is so moreish so I’ll let you off.” For a JRPG the combat can feel a lot like just hammering the attack button. Some music can be a bit repetitive. Mind you, the orchestral score sounds just brilliant for this type of game. Ahhh, there’s not much to complain about: it’s a bit easy, there’s not much voice work, there’s too much text at times, a fair few side quests are just go here collect this and return, the main characters aren’t really developed much at all after their part in the story ends, it’s a bit short but, by jove, if I didn’t enjoy playing it.

8/10

You're a private dick. Well, a journalist in that line of work anyway. Many people died x years ago, case unsolved and it's up to you to solve it (Or slack off, make some shit up and send that off) Observation skills required. Unfortunately, piecing together the evidence isn't quite as required, as it pretty much gives you the answer if you dick long enough and hard enough. This game has lots of bugs. But for £3.74, can't really complain. (Oh, and the trailer contains spoils, so don't watch it)

Well, if the makers of the game weren't at least partly inspired by studio ghibli, I would be very surprised. mainly a story wrapped in a platforming game.
Unfortunately, gameplay wise, it doesn't hold up so well. Platforming is rather hamstrung by the animation, and it could really use the ability to skip text. As it stands I don't want to find out what happens if other choices are made because SLOOOOOOOOW.
