It's a coincidence. https://www.wired.com/story/facebooks-l ... icrophone/

On Monday I watched "only connect" where one of the connections (and spoilers if you haven't seen the show and you don't want the answer to one of the 2nd round questions ruined)

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Was to do with a Two Ronnies Sketch, I had a conversation about it with my son, because he wasn't really aware of it, but Today on my main Youtube page, I spot the thumbnail for this video:

Is that a coincidence, or did google pickup on the content of that episode, see there was an uptick in people searching for that video, conclude that I might also be the sort of person who would like to watch that video and then show me the thumbnail?

Pretty much every other video on that main page is my usual stuff (maths, science, politics, tech stuff, news etc), just that one link.

Oh the video in my spoiler is the exact one the question is about.

To my shame I didn't get that question.
I did get a 5-pointer on round one however, which I'm quite proud of:

Yay! And a far trickier question to score on.

I'd never heard that term before.

Any way, exciting as talking about questions on Only Connect is.

Which one of these happened?

1 Google is listening to me and targeting videos I might like based on what it's heard

2 Google is aware, on some level, that people like me like Only Connect, and that people my age might remember comedy from the 70s/80s and that a reference to said comedy might make people curious to watch a video about that reference (trying to keep this spoiler free) and decided to put the link on my home page because of that

3 It's a massive coincidence.

Just read that post out loud and wait for Google to give you the answer.

Perhaps your son searched for the clip and, as you have other clips in common, Google matched your IP and served it up to you too?

4. Watching of the clip spiked after the show, and YouTube present popular spiking content to people's home pages.

Or even "lots of people watched only connect then that two Ronnies sketch" so add it to the list of recommendations

Possibly, I mean that's sort of what I was implying, however, it's now Wednesday. Granted that was probably the first time I've been on the youtube front page since Only connect was broadcast.

Parenting milestone passed - watched Bill Bailey's Part Troll with the boys over the last couple of evenings. At one point Sam said he couldn't breathe for 20 seconds. They've never watched stand up comedy of any sort before as, well, generally it's a bit adult. Bill is of course a bloody lovely fellow and mixes awesome comedy with music, so the boys got a lot out of it. They've also now learned why U2 are shit :)

They’re ten and almost twelve. I wouldn’t have done it any younger as there were a few swearies and a couple of more adult jokes - you’d also have to explain acid and marajuana to a seven year old... ours are aware of the concept of illegal drugs and Mr Baileys bit on acid at Glastonbury did wonders for putting them off it :)

So given that I know your families, that last sentence took me a while to make sense of.

Having my traditional Friday pint and 'Parklife' came on the jukebox. About half the pub's customers sang the chorus. A good way to brighten up a cold November day.

I don't give two tuppeny turds. I'm A Celeb and other so-called 'reality TV' is just a tool of illuminati to divert the proles from rebelling against the shit imposed upon them, e.g. Brexit.
