I had a tour of a Royal Mail sorting office years ago and they had huge banks of workers all sitting at blank typewriters inputting post codes from letters that zoomed past.

I asked why they had blank keyboards and the tour guide said it was to stop people looking down at the keyboard and missing a letter whizzing past.

I guess that all these people have since been made redundant and instead, there's a robot with a camera doing their job.

Why were they doing it in the first place?

That's a good question? I think they were typing in the post code so they could stamp the letter with a barcode that would then be read by a machine which would then send it to the right sorting area in the building.

This would be before computers were any good at reading hand writing I guess? I think I was about 6 or 7 when I went.

They were definitely already gone when I worked there in 1997.

Any that the computer can’t read get spat out and have to be manually sorted.

When I did it there was no typing, you just took them and put them in the right sorting box

I've never been to the mail centre, but how I've been told it works is that there are people who view a scan on their screen of the outside of the envelope or packet and type in the correct postcode and then it gets sorted automatically somehow. Magic I guess?

If we get missorts or redirections at work we put them in the correct pigeonhole if they're our area. If they're internal post (NG or DE) they go in a separate container. If they're anywhere else they go somewhere else.

Fuck me that's brutal, even an £1100 card (the 2080Ti) can just about scrape 60FPS at 1080p.

So glad I specced a 1080 for Mrs Hearthly's PC and bought when I did, since all the 10xx cards have gone up in price since the penny dropped as to what a shitshow the 20xx cards are. (And the 10xx cards are starting to get low on stocks now as well.)

I can’t get interested in PC gamers complaining about not getting 120 FPS with this new tech. This new thing looks lovely even with just 60FPS.

It can't even do 60FPS at 1440p! And that's the £1100 card, the 2070 is essentially presenting the 'game' as nothing more than a tech demo.

The total cost of a PC including a 2080Ti will be pushing £3000, and for that you get 60FPS (just) at 1080p.

Ray-tracing is exciting of course, but this generation of cards won't be the one to actually get it into games in any sort of meaningful sense.

EDIT - And that's with RTX on the shitty low settings, enable the proper setting and you're down at 50FPS, on an £1100 graphics card.

I was watching some video that was saying that for games to render using ray tracing for anything but a few fancy shadows or reflections here and there then it'll require such fundamental change that the hardware needed likely won't even be able to run current games etc. But also that it will have to happen if we're ever going to return to seeing anything other than incremental improvements in return for ever larger amounts of time and effort.

So I've got my head around how to 'do' 4K now. I was flailing about a bit and not finding a comfortable way to use the screen, and sort of ended up just having bigger versions of everything I had on the old 1440p screen.

However, the penny dropped me for last night and I split the screen into four 1920x1080p quarters, using the handy window snapping shortcuts (WIN+UP then WIN+LEFT will snap a window and resize to the top left, and so on).

So in essence I get 'four PCs' running at the same time on a single screen, so for example here I had Hearthstone, two online casinos, and an internet quarter at the same time.

This immediately made me much happier and is HEARTHLY'S TOP TIP on how to do 4K.

Well to complete my "all new peripherals" thingermebub I got this on BF (Alienware.co.uk) for £24 or so.

Image

Image

Had my eye on them for a while. They are Logitech made, IIRC and were £55. There have been a few used on Ebay for £35, but I am glad I waited now. I also got a new surface on Amazon Lightning deals for £6.89 Prime.

Image

I've had the expensive ones (Razer Goliathus) and I have had cheap ones (some £7 thing) and one thing I noticed is that they all get messed up pretty quickly. So there is no point in spending loads hoping it will wear/last longer.

All I need now is a good, powered USB 3 hub (like a good one that doesn't mess up all the time). I will wait for a deal before pouncing on that :)

WIndow 'snapping' is insanely handy, it's a brilliant feature to help get the best out of any monitor but it becomes even more useful (and important) with really big, or multiple, monitors.

Also if things get stuck off the side off the screen.

Also true. Powerpoint on my work macbook has an annoying habit of getting stuck off the side of the screen, particularly if I have had to unplug the laptop from the monitor (or, put it back again).

I find now that working on a computer without the snapping function is quite a hindrance, I've become so accustomed to it. It's not built in to OSX, so needs an app installed to do it... at work all the computers are OSX

But those new GFX cards eh? Woof!

Awlright!

Well I bit the bullet and finally updated my PC, having come into an unexpected bit of extra money and having been done some saving for a-whiles. The old computer was increasingly freezing up, with Lightroom lagging and stumbling like a blinded Donald Pleasance attempting to negotiate fleeing the border in occupied France, whilst more and more computer games were simply saying, "Ha ha, no," at my specs. So with a big chunk of change I ordered the following custom build from Scan.co.uk, a company who'd built my mate's PC that he was well satisfied with...

Ryzen 5 2600X
32GB DDR4 3000 RAM
NVIDIA 1060s 6GB
500GB SSD Drive
6TB HD Drive
Blu-Ray Writer.
BENQ 2700PT 27" monitor.

It arrives tomorrow. Coo.

This system is basically designed with two goals in mind. The first is to run Lightroom / Capture One with quick imports and breezey editing thanks to the SSD housing the catalogues and virtual copies, the RAM doing the heavy lifting and the big old fashioned hard drive holding the files. The Blu-Ray writer will allow me to burn weddings on to disc and make project back-ups. An external HD will cover the rest.

The monitor has high colour accuracy at 100% SRGB and 99% AdobeRGB which means I'll finally get colour accuracy, and it comes with a print display mode which means I should be able to make prints now that don't automatically look like they've been processed by the same people who grade tragic NSPC adverts. It's accurate out of the box, but I aim to get a good calibrator in future. Rocking this combo, 2018 will be the year of photo-zines, which I will inevitably try to hawk in pitiful fashion to you people.

Finally and secretly the machine is designed to allow me to play Cities Skylines with ALL THE MODS, so I can finally build uncannily realistic American mid-west towns with shopping malls and diners and motels and sprawling suburbs and depressed urban wasteland without it being brought to its knees by the ridiculous RAM demands of the tricked-out heavily-modded City Building game of champions.

I suppose there's some shooters or something that have been released in the last year, but I've no idea.

Nice build Pete, the Ryzen 5 2600X is a great CPU and a really good match for the tasks you'll be asking it to perform.

I'm a bit fan of Scan's custom builds, my PC is one of their 3XS custom builds, and Mrs Hearthly's new PC is as well. They do a fantastic job on the cabling, super neat and tidy, and do a proper soak test before sending it out along with all the test validations.

32GB of RAM is an interesting choice, I chuck a LOT of shit at mine and can never get it much above 12-13GB RAM used, but your usage case scenario may require more RAM than me.

What case did you go with?

A boring respectable looking one. Can't remember the name. Second cheapest, I think, glass side. I won't be looking at it and I find fancy LEDs visually distracting. Indeed LEDs are the bloody bane of my photographic career and send me into a quiet rage whenever their horrible, hard, sensor-burning sickly light illuminates a wedding venue.

Yeah, to be perfectly honest although the 32gb will come in handy for shaving the odd second off intensive photo-processing of large RAW files, especially big film-scan .tiff files, the real reason is to support the mods in Cities Skylines, my favourite game ever. With the level of detail I like to go in to in my cities I download hundreds of real-life Americana assets which used to bring the old compy to its knees. Well, now they have thousands and I've got to catch them all. It might seem a bit absurd spending big coin on such thing but to be honest half my PC Gaming is Cities Skylines, has been for the last two or three years and always will be, I think. :)

Glad to hear 3XS have served you and the missus well. I really like their tracking build system. The last computer I got was okay but has always been unstable and came with bad bios / driver issues that haunted me to this day. I got that one from Overclockers and I don't think I'll be using them again.

Well one thing is clear, I won't need a Christmas tree or any decorations this year. Simply set the outside case lighting to red and the inside green, instant St Nick.

It's autistic organised chaos. The problem is I take on too much, then get in a mess. Don't worry, I spent nearly two hours tonight (whilst watching TV) slowly pecking away at it. Problem is I have 3 PCs in bits to make one, and I can't really move them until the big one is done. Once that's done one of them is going in my mother's loft and the other becomes a server hidden in the corner.

I probably say that too much, but the flat is rarely this bad. Bite and chew comes to mind, it's literally had me just walk away twice and bugger off for a week.

The bedroom is very clear and a nice haven. Winter is closing in now and the last thing I want to be doing is tripping over shit. I have a nice comfy sofa bed with luxury mattress, so once it gets too cold to do anything (even with the heating on 21, the windows just piss air) I am going to just dive onto that with a nice thick feather duvet. I am not being a martyr this year. I am trying to learn where my boundaries are, and not get to the point of swallowing loads of pills. It's very difficult when you are autistic. I mean, yesterday I got home around 2pm, worked until midnight, went to bed and then was out of bed again at 2am to work until 3:30. Then I woke up every hour, and today I am just floating around in a tired anti psychotic induced stupor.

Hurrah! It's all up and running. I managed a wee spring clean as well while I was waiting for Windows 10 to install and what-not. This monitor is flipping huge! I just celebrated by playing American Truck Simulator as my inaugural game, running at 1440p at max settings... and gosh, on a 27" monitor, it feels as if you're kind of in the cab.

Am very impressed with Scan.co.uk. The guide they provided was good enough so that even a layman such as I could get it set up, and all the cables were neatly squared away inside. They bundled some images of benchmark scores on my desktop too...

3DMark [Time Spy] 4508 (CPU 6502, Graphics 4277)
Passmark Rating: 5568
CPU Mark: 15478.6
2D Graphics Mark: 923.2
3D Graphics Mark: 11300.7
Memory Mark: 2399.1
Disk Mark: 4911.8

I assume these are good. Whelp, anyway, it's going to take me some time to get use to Windows 10 from Win7, and to the new dinky size of all the icons. :)

I think you can change how the OS scales Pete, so look into that mate. 1440p on a 27 is less than I am used to, but I'm pretty sure you can change OS scaling until you are comfortable. Fantastic pixel density for the most important job though, gaming :D

People also seem to have a lot of bad to say about Cortana, but seriously no shit if it wasn't for her I would be eating burnt dinner every day. I find just that aspect of it invaluable. I don't like how they changed her recently (she's not as friendly any more and sounds a lot more like my ex wife) but she still does her job bless her :)

Oh edit for Pete.

That was my run using a Maxwell Titan (so about 1070 performance). I was also using a 6 core 12 thread Intel, however Unigene benchmarks tend to favour the Intel CPUs massively when doing the physics test.

I think that fits with Halo lore...

Progress.

It's a bit of a wedgie, but it all fits.

Next up, fitting the front and floor. Hand gymnastics.

I got this far before hitting a few snags.

I need some more fittings to finish the loop and I don't like how the GPU block looks so I need to fashion something to cover it.

Probably the silliest decision yet but I decided I just don't like the water block at all. Not after doing so much work. It was OK before because you couldn't see it, but it just doesn't look right in copper. Which sucks, because they are fucking expensive. When I got that ^ it was the only block you could get (saw a Custom PC article) and it cools brilliantly but the copper just doesn't look right.

So I bit the bullet and got this.

Which also happens to be RGB. It will delay the build for another week/week.5 but it's worth it I feel. I will sell off the copper one with the back plate and hopefully recoup some funds.

Yup. That’s a 43” 4K display. At 100% scaling, it’s about 110 dpi, which is the same as a 27”/1440p screen. I’ve explicitly bought it to run at that resolution for desktop work.

However; this one was an Amazon warehouse deal and turned out to have a scratch on the sceeen, so I’m returning it and looking for another.

Having returned this and had my refund, I successfully navigated the minefield that is "speccing a 4K TV to use as a monitor" and settled on an updated Sony model which I duly ordered on a Black Friday deal. Which I have just cancelled in exchange for this, for £390 (£80 less than the Sony TV): a 40" Philips monitor, curved, VA panel, 4k resolution, DisplayPort inputs (which the TV lacked of course) as well as HDMI etc.

I reckon that'll do me.

A 40” monitor feels bonkers to me. Then again I probably would have said that about 27” ten years ago, which is what I have now.

Mum has a little (32") white TV. It's really nice. Not seen anything like it since the 80s tbh. It's a Philips too.

My mum has a curved TV. When you turn it off the screen is black.

Yeah I did that once. It's a massive PITA. Would be OK if you could just have another monitor permanently rotated but it meant clearing my desk, rotating, then putting everything back.

Plus 95% of the layouts out there are of dubious quality to make it worth it.

I did it a few times for Pac-man when I first had this monitor. It was interesting but you're right, a bit of a faff.

The cables got in the way massively as there's 5 coming out of the back of mine.
