Sunrise.

The citizens of Sixwick arise with trepidation. What horrors has the darkness brought this night?

All gather in the town square, save two. But which two?

The search is on and doesn't take long. Around the back of the house on the edge of town awaits a grisly scene. Two men lie dead, seemingly at each others hand. The first holds a doctor's bag, fallen open with many rusty, blood stained implements spilled from within. The second clutches a small silver shield. Both are dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Zaphod79 was a Serial Killer

Runcle was a Cop

Well, that's not brilliant, but not awful. The description confuses me somewhat though. Do we assume that Runcle killed Zaphod and the mafia killed Runcle?

So... ummm.. yay for Runcle finding the serial killer! Boo for Runcle finding the serial killer and getting himself killed in the process!

What happened to the Mafia?
Did they choose to do nothing? Possibly
Did they target a protected person? Possibly, but one hell of a coincidence
Did they timeout? unlikely as the day started an hour early by my townie watch.

Huh. Not great to lose the cop but their value.wouldn't show til late in the game anyway.
What did the mafia do? Target someone already targeted? Or blocked perhaps?

And Zaphod had a doctors bag, but wasn't the doctor?

I'm in the library at the moment and have the town charter in front of me, it say
"If the Cop finds the serial killer, both will die in a bloody shootout"

Whoa whoa whoa now!

You are pretty experienced at living in towns like these, or so I recall. That is a pretty newbie mistake to make to "misread" a rule like that, that is very well established.
Why would you do that?

It is good that an SK is dead. Guess we won't know until later if there is another (the rules say there are 0-2 of them).

A cop-SK shootout isn't a rule I've seen before.

With no other kills, I'd wager that there was just the one SK. I assume that zaphod's doctor kit was part of the kill description he didn't get to use.

So, either the Mafia are playing a sly game and didn't go for a kill, or the doctor blocked a kill.

If the latter is the case then it means the doctor has a 50/50 chance of having blocked a mafia type, which is good news.

I think its too much of a coincidence that we didnt see an SK and Mafia kill last night.
Probably would hypothesise that there is (was) only one SK, and the Mafia hit failed.
This is backed up by the fact we have one townie roleblock (Doctor).
The caveat being, the second SK, if present, may just be choosing to wait, or targetted the other SK (not sure what would happen in that case - but assume, Investigation leads to kill of first SK, second SK target then is already dead, so cant be killed again...)

Anyway. Overall. SK down good. Cop dead, bad.
But it couldve been up to 4 deaths overnight by comparison.

Presumably then the mafia were either roleblocked or timed out.

Again, there is probably only one serial killer unless they too were timed out.

It does seem unlikely that both the mafia and another SK did nothing or went for the same person. I'd be quite comfortable assuming there's no second SK for the time being.

Cop down, though. That does put a pretty serious dent in our ... er... stuff we don't want dented. Hm.

Any suspicions? Russ was curiously close to the chop last night, but nobody piled on for that killing vote. I'm not sure what to make of that. I'd say either the mafia had already all voted for him, didn't want to because he's one of them, or just weren't too bothered about getting an early lynch.

Russ! Say things!

AaahI find it hard to think the Mafia would pile in this soon. It benefits them little - a no lynch really does them no harm.

Yeah, but if we're one vote short of a lynch, it'd take minimal exposure for the mafia to get a quick and easy extra kill.

At this stage, I think it would be unlikely for the mafia to try and start a bandwagon, as if the the lynchee turned out to be a good guy, then whoever started it would be FOS.
We didn't get to the tipping point where they would jump in at the end to push someone over, regardless of whether they were good or not.

However a good tactic would be to wait to see if a bandwagon is starting, and then vote. As we had 10 possible votes, and the middle of a bandwagon is a good place for the mafia to hide, I would question voters 4, 5 and 6. Gospvg, Zaphod and Grim, and Zaphod is obviously out.

That leaves Gos and Grim as a 50/50. For no better reason than a flip of my townie coin, I [vote: Grim...]

Not sure about that. Before the cop died, if the Mafia took too long about thinning out the town then they could be found out and lynched themselves.

This doesn't mean that they'll have jumped on the bandwagon. Indeed, they may have sat back hoping that the town did it for themselves, as putting in one of the last couple of votes is often seen as a scummy thing to do.

Whilst I agree with the logic about bandwagons, drawing it out to a lynch vote like that is really a bit tenuous..

Yeah, that's why I'm not sure what to make of it. On one hand, let's say Russ is innocent - being the last voter would draw suspicion, rightly or not. But then, let's imagine he's mafia - then they'd want to sit back because he's one of them (I doubt it's worth taking out one of their own on day one).

I think that of those two scenarios, it's more likely that they'd hold back because he's one of them than because the last vote is suspicious, as bagging a free kill is probably worth the risk of exposing one goon.

I am a little suspicious of Trooper for the fairly late attempt to swing away from him, and also to a lesser degree of Kalmar, to be honest.

However, this is all assuming that they did, in fact, hold back. They might have already voted, or just decided not to get involved.

My reasoning behind that, as mentioned at the time, was that we were doing the usual thing of lynching the vocal. This always happens, and never for the good of the town as far as I can see. It's always the quiet ones.
I have no idea if Mr Russell is bad or not, and no way of finding out apart from what people say on here, so lynching people who say stuff doesn't help the town, as far as i can see.

Hm. Fair point. It's more the timing than anything. It wasn't a big suspicion, nor of kalmar.

Nick, didn't Kalmar vote with you yesterday? Why the change of heart?

Actually wait, thinking about it, lynching people who say stuff does help the town - it gives us more information to go on. If Mouthy Barry gets lynched, we can look at what he says and reconsider it based on what role he turned out to have. If Quiet Jim gets lynched, though, we've nothing to go on.

I think I'd like to hear from Russ on this.

Good point, but only if the Talky Trevor is a bad'un.

Past history shows that the axis of evil don't poke their head up in the first few days, for fear of popping it into a noose.

Is that because you're the mafia godfather and instructed them not to vote for you?

A few people are being far too quiet for my liking, Joans only posted once yesterday I think and hasn't today.

I'm going to stick with [vote: Mr Russell] because I'm far too tired to go over both days from when I voted for him just now. So far as I can see nothing has been said today to make me change my mind. Will try again tomorrow if I'm still alive.
