I think Town just bottled it there.

Joans hinting that the wrong lynch loses the game for town says to me he's the Vig.

If they just lynched the Vig, it's game over.

By the end, he was the only one to make sense.
Problem is, that's not always the correct option, but fortunately, in this case, it was.

Joans could hint all he wanted, I was quite happy to reveal my role - and 'prove' it with reference to my cowardice the previous night, finally giving people confirmation that Kovacs wasn't targeted twice - until we got him strung up. The only alternatives were that Mr Russell or Zaphod were playing a brilliantly ice cold game as mafia. It had to be Joans, but then I already knew I was that stupid vigilante. Sorry to all my victims, but at least you all won!

By the end, there was enough known about the three (relatively) chatty people to make the decision fairly simple - although not necessarily right. If Joans had been more cunning and active during the game, he could've made that extremely awkward.

It becomes even easier to spot if you add in who killed who.

So why wasn't Grim... the vigilante?

Incredible, isn't it?! :DD

I was going to change the order after day 1, but I figured if that's what got Gilly and Kalmar killed, I'd better leave the pattern in place for the town side to spot.

I think Grim... wasn't the vig because I added in the vig after I'd randomly assigned the other roles. So there was an extra shuffle in my spreadsheet for that one role.
