I both agree and disagree with you. I've already said as an independant event the outcome of a coin toss is always 1/2, but I'm not talking about an independant event, I'm talking about 10 flips, not 1 flip. When you consider 10 flips at once then the probability of 10 tails is very very low, though not impossible. I'm correct by virtue of the mathematics alone!

1/2 AND 1/2 = 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4, and so on. In other words, there's a 1 in 4 chance of you flipping a coin twice and it being tails both times. Same goes for mafiascum really, but only when you consider all three games at once. In other words, I could play 1000 games and never be a vanilla townie, but the odds would be incredibly against such an outcome, no?

Irrelevant.

In the next game, you have exactly the same chance of being (or not being) a vanilla townie as anyone else. Each game is independent of each other. So saying 'Comical must be a vanilla townie this game, because he wasn't in the last games' is a logical fallacy.

He has the same chance, but it is less likely when you consider all the games at once.

Everyone understands the maths at work here; this is just quabbling over semantic terms used.

Yes, if you want to get technical with propositional logic, the term 'Comical must be a townie in the next game' is incorrect, but the semantics of what The Gaywood was saying isn't what I was talking about.

Dunno. A few days before it starts, I guess.

Aha, oops. Fixed.

The other drawback about perceived 'stronger' players is that they often get killed early on, 'just in case'.
This. There is an iterative prisoner's dilemma game going on around players who are -- or more accurately, who are perceived to be -- strong. If they are on the other side they are targets, either for killing or recruitment. It's not a bad thing, it's part of the game, I think.

Dudley wrote:
when gaywood (appeared to say) you were more likely to be a townie this game because of the previous ones.
That's not what I was getting at though, I just worded it badly. I mean CG's likely to be a Townie because Townie's are more common than any other role; I was actually thinking (although not saying) Townie-aligned, not Vanilla Townie. If you are in the cult or mafia, people like CG, yourself, Craster, Curiosity -- aforementioned strong players -- are targets for assination or conversion. Additionally, the Town knows that in any game with a cult-like faction, as the game goes on they are more likely to be converted (if still alive) and hence less trustworthy.

This is somewhat spread out though because if we get 3-5 of these perceived strong players in one game you can't give them all special treatment.

Plissken wrote:

It looks like we won't be starting until 7th July though -- i.e. a week off before we begin. Does that change what you said?

I've done the past 3 games, so I'll sit this one out and let others who want to play have a chance.

I'd like a go, please. I haven't played before. I'm also going to be sitting around doing not very much for the next couple of weeks, having just had surgery, so I don't really mind when it starts.

So I have in my definitely-playing list:
Dudley
The Rev Owen
Dimrill
Mr Chris
Mr Dave
Bobbyaro
vegetables
Grim...
Malc74

And in my ballot list:
kalmar
myoptika
Craster
Runcle
Rodafowa
KevR
Plissken
Mr Russ
Spinglo Sponglo!
LaceSensor
Zardoz
Curiosity

That's only 21 in total, so if there are no more signups, I will probably start the game as-is rather than bother to remove one player. Does anyone want to be taken out of this list now? There was some dissention further up the thread, some people saying they wouldn't be online, but I wasn't clear if that was for next week or this week.

I will close signups at midday Friday, roles should be selected and PMd out over the weekend ready for the game to start on Monday. That OK by everyone?

I'll definitely take part if selected, but I will be posting a lot less than normal. Please don't kill me because of this!

My desk at work is moving from being at the edge, where nobody can look over my shoulder, to being in the middle of a different floor, where my boss, his boss, and basically everyone else can see what I'm doing.

As such, my work-based BETEO use will be greatly reduced (as of 4pm this afternoon... stupid office moves!)

Grr, I wasn't going to and I really shouldn't but may I play?

I didn't play in game 3 but I think it is unfair for me to jump in at this late stage and potentially knock someone out of the current 20ish you already have who been signed up for ages.

Can I be added to a list of players who will make up the numbers if people have to drop out?

Kalmar, Curiosity -- I don't think reduced post count (as long as it's more than zero!) is a reason not to play. In fact it'll help the game slow down a little, which will help for other non-work-BETEO-types. I don't see this as a bad thing.

Bluecup -- if you want to play I think it's entirely fair you should be on the non-ballot list. You didn't play in the last game, and although you are late in this thread I don't think that makes a difference. I haven't closed the call for players and that's all that matters.

There's one place left on the definite list, and of course it's bluecup's. The reason for the definite list is for people who don't see the sign up threads in the first 30 seconds to have a chance of guaranteeing a go.

No. I'm definitely not around on the 11th and 12th, and possibly the 10th. So if it goes at a usual pace, then I might not be around for the denouement, which would be a bit silly. And I'm not going to want to be killed off for the sake of it. So I'll watch this one and go into Game 5.

Last minute thought - If the Van Helsing can sacrifice himself to save his protectee, you'll be waiting for the VH at the end of the night (once you know someone has targetted the protected person).

Good point. I'll make them specify in advance if they are willing to lay down their life.

I rewrote everything, added some ambiguity around role numbers, made the Loon immune to biting, and added a minor block ability to the vigilante to make it less obvious when, if the vampire find someone they cannot bite, who they are. What do you think?

Bobbyaro

People who were in Game III:
LaceSensor
kalmar
Rodafowa
Craster
Runcle

If no-one else wants in I won't be doing a ballot, I'll just go with these 21 players.

All roles have been PMd. If you should be in the game and haven't had a role let me know via PM for I have clearly been some manner of fool.

Game starts Monday people. You have the weekend to plot strategy and try and pick holes in my game!
