Ooh, how about a game where the optional SK used a slow-acting, symptom-less poison, so his victims died two nights after he targetted them?

Then people wouldn't be sure if the SK was in the game at all for a bit.

I have found this game to be incredibly exciting, but then I've not been an indecisive dithering townsperson :DD

Or someone has the ability to silence people so they can't post in the thread.

Sorry this was in response to my suggested game. As their night power, someone has the ability to silence/or limit responses from another player in the thread. Look at the suspicion being quite generates. Imagine if every post you made had to be vetted by someone else, or you could only make 3 posts and then some one says, "defend yourself" and you can't post.

I'd probably make it so you could post a vote, with no other text and only post one vote per day, until the poison wore off.

Oh I see.

Interesting. Very interesting.

A related role suggestion would be

You are a Grudge Holder - You see the trouble in town as a fantastic chance to get your revenge on ___________ whom you know to be sleeping with your missus. Thus you will try to get him lynched every day. While on the side of the town, your primary win condition is to get ______ lynched.

I'm not sure if you'd tell ________ he was a target or not.

I was thinking that if you were too quiet people might realise you had been targetted.

Yeah I'm suspicious of him now, he's played it too clever and the SK's choices fit his pattern.

Also, is anyone else more interested in knowing who, if any, was the loon than the SK?

Can I first say, thanks to Craster for stepping in to run the game today. I've had to be away from my PC all day today so I couldn't be around. Cheers Craster. I've been following the thread via my phone though (beex doesn't look great at 320x240!). Ironically I have to go back out in an hour for a leaving do, so I won't be here this evening either.

Secondly, this last day is aceness. I couldn't have hoped for a better ending than this double-or-nothing hunt-the-killer final day. It may appear on the face of it that they are picking aimlessly, and have little chance, but I'm not sure that's true: several people's speculation, both in PMs and in-thread, have been spot on. The killer is findable I believe. Although not at the rate they are going!

The other point of contention is the identity of the loon (yes, there is one!). Don't waste too long sweating this; he's played a rubbish game and is essentially unfindable because of it.

Presumably the psychiatrist wins that by default as the village will stop lynching and the loon would eventually be found...

In regards to changing the rules, I think it needs jazzing up in the early game: I think the midgame and endgame have been fine. Someone on Live last night (can't remember who sorry) suggested adding pre-bitten Townies, 3-4 or so, at the beginning. This lets the vampires spread faster but restricts them to some "obvious" targets.

I'd also consider adding a second starting Childe. That would have helped I think. I'd might so as far as to make it so bitten Townies have to speak up, I think, but I'd add some Selfish Townie roles who were the same but wouldn't speak up (primary win condition would be survive, not town).

I'd then change around the priest and Van Helsing roles a little. Not sure how yet. The Van Helsing is too weak I think. Perhaps adding an optional investigate role.

After the game we'll have a proper post mortem thread. I'll tell everyone how it panned out each night and we'll debate the ruleset.

Dudley, I think I'd call it a tie on the psychiatrist-loon thing. Neither one achieved their goal.

The loon was rubbish! All he had to do was get lynched, how could you fail with that baying mob??

Anyway, well played serial killer. Not sure if I missed any subtle clues, but I don't know who it is.

Although I'm not sure about all that suspicion about me being the SK (I wish I had been though). Surely with every other idiot having voted for Mr Russ, I could've thrown my vote in and won by yesterday lunchtime.
Wish I'd stuck with the Grim... suspicion though.

I'd like to disagree with the "rubbish game" accusations. I was playing the way I was playing consciously- at the start of the game it looked as though things were going to last for a long time, and with the psychiatrist having a large mass of people to look through I thought it was safer to just barely play and wait to be lynched/S-killed/found by the vampires and get lynched through the fallout. You seem to all be suggesting that attempting to get lynched by being bonkers and outspoken is a brilliant strategy. It is not- Mr Dave gave an example of pretty much exactly that, and if he had been the loon he'd have lost then and there. I thought it was better to not go balls-out attempting to win early on given the way the game is set up, and I still think that now having lost. I've played unexcitingly, but I don't think I've played rubbishly.

Nope. Not used it before for this. In fact, I didn't "use" it this time. I happened to see it whilst I was looking for something else, and opened my big mouth. Didn't think it would be an issue, what with people constantly using other meta data like "HE HASN'T POSTED ALL DAY OMG HE'S A SK".

Any meta data could be justified narrative-wise as seeing people talking in hushed tones in the corner of the pub, for instance.

But if it's going to be an issue we need to clarify *exactly* what people can and can't refer to. But bear in mind that bannign reference to absence from the board, for instance, removes a possibility of referring to the fact that someone is indeed playing a cagey game and are deliberately staying schtum.

I think it had more of a chance of working than any other strategy, myself. This isn't the kind of ruleset where you can look shifty and be lynched, simply because it'll be pretty obvious you're the loon if you do do that, and so attempting to be lynched becomes something which will cause you to auto-lose if you don't do it. Although it did have the side effect of being no fun at all to play.

The best idea is the round table structure, where everyone spends all day around a big table in the village hall, and the posts are actually parts of a great discussion. Everyone can see each other, ther's no slipping off to the pub, everyone stays put. You get dinner called in. The communication between scum/masons/cult/whoever during the day is all done through eye-contact, rudimentary sign language, stressing of certain words, psychic powers, notes or whatever. Only people in those factions can understand it, or even know its happening. Everyone arrives at the same time each morning, and leaves at the same time each night. Nothing outside the village hall exists, except for colour text. Everything that happens outside the village hall is purely mechanical in nature anyway.

I think this gives a good baseline for what's appropriate.

If you don't post for a game day, then your character literally has sat in the village hall all day without saying a word. This would get called in real life. So that's fair enough. But there's no way to spot the mafia communicating, they're too smooth, and have been doing it for years. It barely requires the don looking at his mook and at his target. Someone claiming to have spotted this (though outside meta data) would A) be disbelieved by the room of other people who've been sat in the same room as the accused for 8 hours that day, and have noticed nothing.. and b) be obviously be unfair, as a source of information beyond the walls of the village hall had been used.

I like your analogy, there, and agree with it. I'd still be very wary of allowing absence as the only meta data allowed to be referred to, though. Mainly because if someones busy at work its quite harsh to have people calling them on it as evidence of guilt and then hang them before they have a chance to respond. And even if they do get a chance to respond, once the accusation is out there that they're playing it close in order to avoid suspicion, if they say "well, I've been busy", even if they have been busy the supicion is still there. Conversely it could also make it easier for the cagey player to just lie and say they're busy.

Still, we do need rules and I do apologise for bringing off table info to the party. I'll be giving myself a one game ban.

Wasn't overly accusing you of evil Chris. As noted, it hasn't really been clarified how much meta-snooping is acceptable, so to some extent doing things like checking the 'currently active' list is justifiable. Except when we've been told it's not. Which we haven't.

But regardless of anything else I still reckon the 'active users' list is not necessary, and a bit creepy really.

You made it patently obvious you were the Preist to everyone really.
My only chance was to not vote along with you, hence I stuck with Mr Russ until later on.
I figured Grim... was a bad guy - and seeing as he fingered you as the preist I was hoping he would get killed by the vampires if they assumed him to be VH. If the vamps had done that, the town would have won.

All great in hindsight of course.

for future I think that you should lose the Masons, and make the preist and Van Halen able to communicate.

Sorry for getting you killed.

I did think that too, to be honest, but it's not unique to here - WoS had the same thing too. I suppose it has its non-creepy and non-cheaty uses, but I'm stumped if I can work out what they are....

It's been useful on other forums for getting conclusive proof someone was hiding from replying to a topic because you knew they'd read it.

This one doesn't specify a topic, so it's next to useless.
