Everything I've seen on the internet is getting me more confused. From what i gather, Wordpress main advantage is bigger customization option, while Blogger is better for everything else. It's free and has more hosting space in the free versions.

Suppose one good option would be to use Wordpress with another host, but still don't know if that's better than going with free blogger.

Tumbler just doesn't appeal to be. Everything I see so far on tumbler seems to be all about big images and not much text. I suppose it's for a different audience.

Depends which tumblr you read. Plenty are about writing. Mine is a mix, but so is my blogger.

I'd go for WordPress.

It depends whether you are going to be self-hosting or not.

If you are going for self hosting go for Wordpress. Customisation is a big plus point here, but really it's more about counteracting Blogger's main down points. Commenting on Blogger is a pain in the bum as there is no name/email address commenting option, so if you have a blog that you'd occasionally like to be able to reply to one of your readers on and copy them in via email, Blogger will not allow you to do this, and a lot of people seem to avoid commenting on Blogger blogs because of the lack of name/email comment option. There's an anonymous comment option, but people rarely use this as an option. Blogger does allow you to use third party comment systems, but again many readers tend to avoid this due to the comment tracking that comes built in.

If you are NOT self hosti though, the wordpress.com blogs are really locked down by way of restrictions, and I found blogger to give a lot more freedom by way of customisation. Plus you can always purchase a custom domain and link your blogger blog to it for a halfway solution.

You can always expire your comments and posts and migrate from one platform to another if needs be (I recently over from blogger hosted with custom domain to self-hosted Wordpress, and it wasn't painful apart from Russell making it more complicated than it should have been...)

Tumblr is bumf.

In addition to blogging professionally for TUAW (on a proprietary CMS), I run all my personal blogs out of Tumblr. I dispute this strongly.

I'd try talking to people, but then again no one listens to me.

Judging by your responses and what I've seen over the internet I guess I'll go first with Blogger, and if I get serious with it, migrate to Wordpress.org. Using Wordpress.com seems quite an hassle, specially as you have to pay to remove ads. In Blogger, with can opt to not have ads for free, and if you permit ads on your site, at least you can make some money out of it.

I have to say that writing all the "i's" with capitalization is such a nuisance. Someone should really rethink your language.

There aren't that many instances where they won't auto-correct to uppercase nowadays.

Is there any advantage in having a web host in your own country? Seems american hosts are cheaper.

But seriously Grim, what is your webhost service?

BTW, my gaming related blog is on http://amigamemoirs.blogspot.com/
