Anyone else seen 'Sandra Bullock Makes Physics Cry While Wearing Skimpies'?

I thought it was most entertaining, and very pretty.

The debris: if it's going so fast wouldn't it change orbital path? Especially if it is smashing into shit and going off in all directions? To stay in the exact same plane seems odd.

When she lets go of George: They're not moving! What's pulling him away? Answer: magic.

ISS and the Hubble are nowhere near that close together.

1: they will be orbiting at the same speed (as they're in the same orbit) but not necessarily in the same direction. Orbital speed is about 50,000 mph I think in LEO; so even if the orbits are almost parallel the difference in speed (and hence kinetic energy) between the two frames of reference will be huge. If the orbits are in different directions that's 100,000 mph between them.

2: the physics advisor for the film, who is an astronaut, has stated what is happening in that scene on Wikipedia: the astronauts are not yet at rest with respect to the ISS. They still have momentum away from it, which is being gradually absorbed in the rope stretching. Clooney's character believes the rope will snap before it fully arrests their motion so he unclips himself. That's a viable scenario, but isn't clear from what you see on screen. It needed to be explained more clearly.

George Clooney came back. He smashed his way straight into the "Top Ten Awesome Fictional Characters", although debate is being had as to if it counts.

In all the space/EVA scenes, everything except the actor's faces is entirely CG.

Although Cloony did a superb job, apparently first in for the role was Robert Downey Jr, and now I'm sad that it wasn't him.

By which I mean the film thread you hate, not a thread about hated films. It's very entertaining. Amazing visuals, and I don't just mean Ms Bullock in her underwear. Some moments that mildly irked me, and some admittedly incorrect physics, but I wasn't there to watch a documentary.

Which physicsy bits were wrong? There's been lots of talk about that on the SA forums, but Neil deGrasse Tyson (noted astrophysicist) has more or less tweeted various tweets recently that says they stack up, from what I gather?

In fairness, the director has publicly said they had NASA or similar involved, and decided that to do the film how they wanted they had to take certain liberties. Which I'm absolutely fine with.

I saw this on Tuesday and loved it. The effects are incredible, it's hard to convince your brain you're not watching a documentary filmed in space. Oscar nominations would be deserved. ZOMG Spoiler! Well, when i went to watch it, there was some girl in front of me saying to her boyfriend "I can't believe how they shot this is space!". But i rather have that than those annoying scientists.

Occam's Razor tells us that the simplest explanation is usually correct. I find it far more credible that Clooney and Bullock were in space than the the so-called "truth" that most of the movie is computer generated.
