That reminds me, someone at work reckons he has a mate who's a driving instructor. He told me that he doesn't make much money off it because he's always being paid "in kind"

18 lessons 2 tests. Had a really good instructor.

My first instructor was crap, and so was his car. I'd never experienced such fear before.

My second instructor was great. Two one-hour lessons a week for three months and I was good to go.

I failed my first driving test because I stopped at the far stop line (shitty bike zone) at a traffic light. Serious fault. It was dark and raining and downhill, and there was no way I could have made the first line even at maximum safe brake-age. I probably would have passed if I'd have just accelerated through it all.

My instructor and I checked the rules afterwards and we confirmed his advice to me that if you're required to stop at a pair of stop lines and it's not possible to stop at the advanced stop line, you must stop at the second stop line. I appealed, but it didn't take. At least I hope I wasted plenty of their God-damned time making them figure it out.

Passed first time when I was 17. If I recall I had 10 lessons, practiced a bit with my mum co-piloting over the summer, then took two more lessons just before the test.

Couldn't drive with my Dad, because like everyone else he was a complete prick about it. He'd tell you how to do it once, and then became enraged when you didn't immediately start driving perfectly thereafter. To this day he doesn't really indicate and it takes him 5 minutes of driving before it occurs to him to put on his seatbelt *shakes head*.

I passed my test 21 years ago when I was 21.

Had a number of lessons from the age of 17 but couldn't be arsed to follow through as there was no car on the table at that point.

The test then was much easier, all about the driving. In those days they asked you a few Highway code questions at the end but could not fail you on this part, even if you got them all wrong.

You could only be failed on the driving part of the test.

You also got to drive more things in those days once you passed, I'm licensed to drive a 7.5 ton truck, even though I've never sat in one. Don't think you get these by default anymore.

I must say, my instructors car was crap. It was a D reg Nova with steering as heavy as hell. Our Transit (which didn't have PAS) either had lighter steering. When I got my own car a few weeks ahead of my test (a Fiesta) I found manoeuvres far far easier. Half the problem with the Nova was it was so bloody heavy that anything simple like reversing around a corner became a battle.

I think this car was a Hyundai i10. Felt like it was made out of tissue paper and there was barely any steering to speak of.

Second guy had a Ford Fiesta Zetec diesel thingy. That was a solid, loud, brummy, fun car.
