Not least because someone gets to shout "FIRE UP THE QUATTRO" every time coal needs adding.

Which is only open 9-5:30 during the week and 9-1 on Wednesdays!

I has it!

I shall post initial impressions as and when they happen...

Firstly, installing it.
That was really easy, plug it in, set it as duplicate monitor, run the calibration utility and away you go. I'm using the B lenses as i'm slightly short sighted, and they work well.

Tuscany Demo:
Screen door is very noticable. People say you look past it and don't notice it, that's utter bullshit, you can't help but notice it. Nice demo, standing up it really feels like you are there, impressive.

Don't let go:
All you have to do is hold onto the keyboard while stuff happens around you, this is the best thing I have tried, the graphics are simple and that helps with the low resolution a lot. I'm very impressed with this.

Euro Truck Simulator 2:
Managed about 2 minutes of this before nausea kicked it. I'll give it another go at the weekend. First impressions are that it is pretty much unplayable at the rift resolution, you really can't see fuck all as to what is going on. I did crash into a barrier while I was looking right on a roundabout, and it made me jump, so the immersion factor is starting to get there.

I'm now downloading a huge amount of random demos and shit to try over the weekend, and i'll try and get Asseto Corsa up and running with it I expect.

Current thoughts are that i'm glad I've tried it, and I'll almost certainly get the proper version, but I suspect the dev kit will be back on ebay in a couple of weeks, as the resolution is shockingly bad and really takes you out of any real immersion.

RiftCoaster:
MAde me feel mildly queasy. Not because I felt like I was on a rollercoaster, but just the motion of the image without any corresponding motion of myself. Not the most successful of the demos so far, didn't really feel like I was in the world.

VRPlayer:
A virtual cinema, and this is really fucking impressive. The first thing I've tried where it feels real (or as real as it can be with the low resolution). It does actually feel like you are sitting in a cinema. I wonder if this is the most impressive because it is something I know what to expect, and my brain fills in the gaps from experience?

Aye, assuming it is of a format it supports, which is currently the usual crop of AVI, MKV etc... I wouldn't actually want to watch anything properly though, as due to the res you lose a lot of detail, and it doesn't have the best codec built in, so is a bit choppy in framerate.

No, just I imagine there is detail you need to be able to see, such as readouts on your ship and other ships that are more than a few feet away. The Rift just isn't up to that yet, needs a much better screen.

That VR cinema has really got me thinking. How convincing is the virtual massive screen? How often do you think when watching a film "this would be ace on the cinema" but have no means of seeing it like that? Would it be possible to show 3D movies on a virtual screen? Could you link 2 sets together with avatars and share the experience?

These are all rhetorical, by the way, but the possibilities of virtual environments excite me much more than the game-play potential.

That 640x480 is going to look pretty hideous on something with a 90° FOV. Sit a normal distance from a normal telly and it takes up maybe 30-40° of your FOV. I think resolution will be an issue with these for some time to come, even "full HD" is going to look a bit sketchy.

The virtual screen is extremely convincing, and it can show 3D movies. I've got a rip of Life of Pi kicking around, i'll give that a go and report back.

The FOV is the thing that really makes immersion happen, I think. Even with the 110 degrees that the Rift provides, it still feels very much like you are looking at the world through a periscope. The lack of peripheral vision is very evident.
However, this might make it feel quite real for a racing sim, as it's just like walking around everywhere with a full face helmet on :D

Asseto Corsa technically works really well with it. However, it makes me feel ill quite quickly, so I can't really play it that much.

Have to say, the fact that you have virtually zero peripheral vision, no matter what game you play, really kills the sense of immersion for me. I thought a racing game would be better as you are wearing a helmet, but it's the same impression of looking through a periscope rather than actually being there.
It'll be interesting to see if that is a problem with the dev kit and they have fixed it for the consumer.

Ask 3D telly.

Cinema doesn't count, very few people will want to sit in their own houses with an Oculus Rift strapped to their head.

I think there is a huge difference between TV watching, which is just as much social activity and entirely passive, to actively playing a single player game, which is what the Oculus is all about.

I sit in my house with big turtle beach headphones on, its not that big of a leap really. Its not totally what its supposed to be yet is it? Probably worth waiting for the second or third generation with peripheral screens and mind probes that affect your motion senses.

Well I can't imagine anyone clamping an Oculus Rift to their head if there's anyone else in the house with them because it's so stunningly anti-social, and anyone with children is probably a non-starter too.

You're probably going to have a percentage of people who feel motion-sickness or get a headache too, or just can't 'see it' like with 3D. (I couldn't see the 3D effect on the 3DS for eample, I could just about get it focused for a short period of time then it made my head hurt and it went, something to do with defective stereoscopic vision or something.)

The actual market for the thing is very small IMO.
