I got so very bored of BF4 after BF3. I bought BF1, played it for about five minutes and thought "Oh god it's just more of the same" and switched it off. Not played it since, nor that Star Wars game I forked £26 for that has no single player mode.

I doubt I will buy another BF now. It's just so stale, I wish they would just make something else more interesting.

It's a 55" TV man. I can tell the difference between 4k and 1080p, as 4k has practically no jagglies at all. 1080p glistens and sparkles with the rough edges. I guess I could put up with it though, if I was playing a game I really liked. What did surprise me was how I couldn't even tell I was playing at sub 30 FPS, over the 70 I play at on PC. Then again I have never been a "60 FPS or die" sort of person as I tend to like slower paced games so for me that part of it doesn't matter.

I expect it was a comment on the distance from the TV, 20ft is a long way

A person with 20/20 vision, looking at something 20 feet away, can resolve details down to approximately 1.75 mm. A 55” TV is about 1215 mm across. This means at 20 feet back a person with 20/20 vision can’t see much meaningful difference between 700x400 or any higher resolution. The eye just isn’t sharp enough to see details that fine.

Is what I said, not simply "20ft". However, just to make sure I took a tape measure, hooked it to the stand on the bottom of the TV and pulled it all the way back to my pillow/the headboard. It ran out at 12ft. I would say it's about 12.5ft. I thought the room was 17ft like the living room, turns out my initial thoughts were wrong.

Still, it's close enough to my 15ft estimate. It's the living room that's about 16-17ft away but I have a 65" in there.

According to many that should not be possible either. But it happens.

I don't think it is that simple when we're talking about videogame graphics. I get what John is saying about jaggies being far more noticeable at 1080p and can believe that the sorts of shimmering effects that aliasing can create would still be apparent from further away than you would be able to discern any difference in a film or a photograph displayed at 4K. Certainly these effects don't all simply disappear when I walk across the room from my 42" 1080 TV.

Post subject:  Re: The Xbox one thread

It's possible the image quality is better in other ways at 4K as well, for example Forza Horizon 4 has more effects turned on in 4K mode than 1080 mode. That sort of thing would be visible from across the room.

It's not just down to the raw pixel count.

It's the edges of large things that I notice it on. Like if I play Gears at 1080p (forgot to put the res back up after watching Amazon) I noticed it immediately. Set it to 4k? it vanishes.

That was the main allure of 4k gaming on the PC, and why I wanted it. As soon as you push a game to 4k (even right up close) the need to use any sort of alias evaporates.

It's an alias thing I think. Basically (now I know, I didn't before) because I am autistic I am very sensitive. To everything. Everything is brighter, louder, smellier etc. Well when I was a kid I was the puker. Every time I was put in a car I chucked. We tried absolutely everything, and then when I was about 17 and started getting into the front of my friend's cars I was fine. Turns out I am very sensitive to light flicker. Like, if I am in a car in the back and we go through a bunch of trees it makes me want to hurl. So that makes me very sensitive to any sort of flickering anywhere. And without edge aliasing images do sort of glisten and flicker. Which makes me feel rough. I mean seriously dude, I can't even go in the front of a car and read a magazine or look at my phone (because then light is flickering away to the sides of me) without wanting to chuck.

That is why I could not play the Xbox 360 I bought. I tried hard, but the flickering from the rough edges in FONV gave me a splitting headache. To be fair that was on a 24" monitor up close like you would be if you were gaming on PC.

I would also surmise that it's a large reason why I am a graphics whore. Because the smoother/clearer it is the less it makes me feel ill.

The XB1X (Xbix from now on) was delivered over the weekend. Sadly, as I've designated it a 'family Christmas present' I can't break it out and play with it for FIFTY FUCKING DAYS. What a numpty.

Anyway, it has a 14 day no-quibble return guarantee so I'll HAVE to test it in the next few days to make sure it works ok. :D

A few quick observations:
The dpad is clicky! It feels a million years better than the 360 dpad.
The bundled games are full disc versions. I was very much expecting download codes.
I want to play with it.

That's interesting, you see, I didn't think the Xbox One pad was as 'solid' as the 360 pad but there you go.

Also, you'll want to plug it in before Christmas as it'll have a shit load of updating to do. If you're not a live subscriber too, you'll have some free games to download as well.

I agree with DavPaz.

Although the elite controller is disappointingly not as robust as a premium controller should be.

I was specifically referring to the dpad there. I wasn't expecting clicky switches. Nice surprise.

Pretty sure I did that with mine, but I had the family account which microsoft stopped doing at some point, now it's just my single account, and they piggy back off that.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not sure but you could always sign up for Xbox live for a month, upload the profiles there and then you should be able to download them to the Xbox One... I think?!?

They still do the family account so you'd be able to look after them.
