Of course, just because we all went PS4 doesn't mean everyone else did. I'm not sure what Microsoft could have done to magically make your friends be on XBox

They could have given us all free consoles and made Doc pay 10 x the normal price.

They should totally do that next.

Sure, although I think what we all did wasn't uncommon, based on other forums and other gamers I know on the Internet and in real life.

Quote:

"Not sucked out loud at launch", obv:

* mandatory Kinect and associated extra price
* hilariously stupid DRM scheme
* muddled messaging about if it was even primarily a games machine ("TV! TV! TV! Sports! Sports! Sports!")
* some actual good year-one exclusives

We didn't get PS4s until a year or so in, so there was plenty of time for MS to make its case. It didn't even come close. The Xbox One was our default purchase, coming from 360; it was MS's game to lose. And lose it it did.

Ah right. It seemed like you were criticising the X1X specifically, rather than the x1 at release.

Yeah, we were all heavily invested in Xbox at that point. They had to do something really stupid to make us all switch. And they did.

Oh, no, except that the X1X exists within the wider context of the X1 of course.

Indeed, but I guess what I'm inferring is that seemingly the only way back for MS is for Sony to massively fuck up the PS5 launch.

The way I see it, the PS4 being more successful than the X1 is just the world going back to normal. The 360 was just a freak occurrence in the grand scheme of things.

I should be but my monitor doesn't do the right kinds of 4k apparently. I kind of knew it but had thought a hdmi to displayport adaptor would work.

None of them do.

But until that gets fixed it can go in the living room because it's smaller, quieter, faster, prettier and has fewer LEDs than the one.

There's a pretty high chance of this, Sony are past masters are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Also, which ever company is 'on top' always thinks they're bullet-proof enough to start doing some stupid customer-fucking corporate nonsense and they'll totally get away it this time round because when has that ever not worked? (aside from all the other times of course) No entity in the universe has a shorter memory than a massive corporation who've been recently successful.

But on the other hand, they aren't likely to have forgotten.

They are, to my knowledge, the only console manufacturer to reclaim top dog spot.

That's less to do with their own actions though and more to do with MS making such a cunt of the entire situation. I mean Sony rightly just focussed on selling their games console by talking about games, but had MS also not fucked everything up I doubt so many people would've made the switch.

That was my point. Their success was due to Microsoft fucking up. Is Microsoft's only way back to the top now if Sony do the same?

Probably. There's a lot if inertia involved in being on a technical platform these days--not least in this case due to the number of your friends that are also on it--so it's more like you need a specific reason to change away rather than looking for reasons to stay. If MS had announced backwards compatibility early on and not been dicks about everything else they'd have utterly and completely buried Sony.

Xbox One X get. Damn it’s heavy.

But most of all, it’s a damn sexy bit of kit and looks terrific. I’d say aesthetically it’s much better looking than the PS4/Pro for a black box.

I’ve got Halo: MCC, Halo 5 and Quantum Break so far. I’ll be getting that Cuphead an’ all.

I don’t think it’s a bad time to try the Xbox OX and catch up on some of the games missed out on. Most of all I’d like some Halo 3 MP shenanigans again if more people took the plunge... but they probably won’t. :(

What’s this Xbox Games Pass about? Does it allow you to download the games? It ain’t a streaming service like PSN is it?

It's like the EA Access thing - a big catalogue of games you can download and play whenever you want, though some games are cycled in/out every month. No streaming, thankfully.

How do I even know if something is updated? Does it do something for all games automatically?

I researched this SUPER well.

The best thing about the Xbox One X is logging in and seeing all your friends list intact and a bunch of games that you purchased on Xbox Live available for download. I’ve been playing Shinobi on my £450 4K console.

That genuinely does sound appealing. Even though I have some stone cold classics to play on the PS4, whenever I look at my 360 library of unplayed/unfinished games they somehow feel more enticing:

Resi 4
Vanquish
The saboteur
Splinter cell conviction
Split second
Dark souls
R6 vegas

What do you mean by XBox Live? Does that include old 360 XBLA stuff?

Can I play Mutant Storm Reloaded on an XBoneX if I have one?

What do you mean by XBox Live? Does that include old 360 XBLA stuff? (Oh, is The online service for Xbox One still called Xbox Live? I don’t think it is - it just says store or something generic. Even the Windows 10 Store logo pops up).

That’s what XBLA is an acronym of init (cept with Arcade on the end)!?

And yes. Yes you can. As far as I know, most (if not all - maybe there’s a backwards compat list somewhere but my lot just sprang up as Available to Download) of the games you purchased years ago can be freshly downloaded and played on the Xbox One X. And not just the Xbox One X but the Xbox One 2. I mean, too.

It’s telling me I can download Comic Jumper (Jesus, remember that!?), Starina (dunno what that was), Super Meat Boy et all. I kinda wish I’d brought more games digitally now but it wasn’t the norm back then.

That is intriguing, I have quite an extensive collection of digitally purchased 360 XBLA games and digitally purchased 360 'normal' games, I was an early convert to fucking off physical media because fuck boxes and fuck discs, and I loved XBLA.

The XBoneX is still a very tough sell for me though, by all accounts it's quite the loveliest console ever (Digital Foundry were mega-impressed with it), but I've just got a horrible feeling I wouldn't do very much with it.

Total back-compat and all my digitally purchased 360 content being made available would be a big tick in the 'yes' column though.

It's nice to buy shiny things. I wouldn't rule this out, along with a new telly, as a pre-Christmas reward for me not spending thousands of pounds on changing my car again, so I think I've earned it. Ha!

It's not total, and annoyingly there are some games where it's only the disc version you can use, rather than the digital version.
Last I checked there were over 400 games. There's a full list on Major Nelon's Website (Your Mutant Storm Reloaded is one :p )
It's brilliant if you have Xbox Live - Games with Gold has given me quite a few X360 games I had wanted to play, but never got around to before my 360 broke.

Not quite true.

If a game is available digitally, and the disc version is a BC title, then the digital version will be too.

There are some games that are not available to buy digitally (either they never were, or have been delisted) that still work as BC titles (Forza Horizon for one), but if you have digitally, it will work.

So in essence there isn't a full-on 360 emulator or 360 'layer' in there, so all your 360 stuff will work, it is very much on a case-by-case basis?

The thing is, I still have my trusty old bright red Resi Evil special edition 360 connected up to the big telly (IIRC that was the 'Jasper' chipset revision, I'm starting to forget the names, but it's pleasantly quiet anyway), so it's easy enough to play any old stuff that I want to - so the XBoneX needs to start from full back-compat I think to be worth considering.

These 360 games work on Xbox One
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_X ... h_Xbox_One
Whether on disc or digitally. But not all of them are available to buy digitally.

With disc games, you insert the disc, but it doesn't play the disc, it downloads a version packaged up with an emulator, but you need the disc in to play it.

Worth noting that all games run better. They have v-sync whether the original release did or not, and some have smoother framerates, and a resolution boost. Even moreso on Xbox One X.
