The trouble with guns and shooting burglars in america is that it merely gives burglars a very good reason to bring their own gun.

I have mixed feelings about america's gun thing. I've heard some very good arguments for it, but set against them is the frightening, insanely rabid obsession a lot of them have with their gun rights. Many of them seem to genuinely believe that their being able to pack heat is the only thing preventing civilisation from being swept away overnight. The number of times I've heard someone explicitly say that the only thing keeping everyone from killing their neighbours and taking their stuff is the fear that they have a gun... brrr.

I hear that argument far too often. It's from the same line of thinking as 'Without the bible as a moral guide, what's to stop you raping and murdering?' and 'If you don't believe in heaven, what's the point in living?'

It's a chilling thought, but I can't even begin to entertain it as being in any way true.
