That was a bit frustrating. Got to near the end of stage 4 with six lives in stock (from extends and 1-ups), lost one, then took several more to reach st5. Still, only half a stage to learn, now! Might try for a 1CC...

Stage 5 is a long bugger. Think I can beat that score, though... :nerd:

I just want to see some of the second loop. Must be pretty hairy.

I welcome you to the Blue Square league - I wonder if we'll have any other members before the end of this one while we all wonder which one of the two specs in the distance is going to win the challenge for this week

Scores so far :

Code:
Flying Shark
YOG: 457,190
Dr Zoidberg: 412,330
zaphod79: 100,810

I did try a couple of continues once, but I kept dying at the same place over and over again anyway :(

Thank you Sir. At least your score is theoretically beatable (once the bandages come off). The two cyborgs here have already left the solar system. I seem to be unable to memorise the stages well enough (actually, mostly stage 1 in my case). I keep getting plugged by a tank sneaking on from the side at the bottom of the screen. Great fun all the same.....

My scores before that 100k were all around the 40 / 50k mark - its really just repetition to learn where things come out and avoid them - it also for me at least is a 1 life game - when you die you lose all your other lives straight away.

One hint for the section I was going through (which is almost the same point as you) is to not bother shooting enough to kill the boats a single shot will remove the turret from the top so they cant shoot you (so you can concentrate on the planes)

Yeah, the snipers are pretty much the biggest threat. The tanks in the trees on stage 1, the boats that come up behind you on stage 3, etc. Remembering where all of those bastards are makes the game a lot easier, since you can kill most of them before they start shooting...

And basically, never stop moving as some will shoot quickly and accurately.

If you do a continual sweep from left to right across the bottom 25% of the screen in a roughly rectangular pattern that should help avoid sneak attacks.

Sooo close. Recovering from a death on st5 is hard, but if you get there without losing a life you'll have plenty of chances, hehe.

Hmm, don't think I'll be beating my score tonight! Had a couple of days off it and now my stage 5 game has gone to pot... :p

I'm glad I got a score in, even if it was a bit rubbish. At least it gets me some points on the board.

Well, it looks like there's 4 of us still in contention, and Space Harrier is a game I'm really not keen on....

37 - Dr Zoidberg
34 - Zaphod79
30 - YOG
29 - MrC

To the emulator......

Theoretically, yeah, but realistically only if I have the rest of you killed...which still wouldn't work as there'd be no Zaphod to tot up the scores and announce the winner.

I don't suppose I can submit my Space Harrier score from the last comp? :p

Just joshing - it was pretty durn high. I was unemployed then, though, so don't worry about anything like a repeat performance!

I had an issue. I was happily blasting away on level 7 on my last life and the fucking emulator booted me back to Windows resulting in insta-death (just like it did the other week on Mr Do).

So I bunged in another credit and played until I lost another life.

I'll leave it up to you lot if you allow it or not. The score was 8074610.

I have no idea why Mame is doing it and its making me quite cross as I was on a good run. I was right in the zone and didn't last very long when play resumed.

I have no idea why MAME is suddenly playing up.

Others can decide if I submit that score or not. I may not have time to try again. One of those weeks.

Don't think so. All that is turned off.

Never did it before I let it do a Windows update. Something is clearly causing it to go back to the desktop at inopportune moments but so far it seems to be at random. It's only done it twice.

Strange how i never played this one before. It's one of the most 80s looking game ever and an absolute epilepsy attack-bait.

I like it.

I'd not got to the Bonus stage before - most odd, and very hard to control. It took a while to figure out what I was supposed to be doing.

Edit - I think I'll have to take that score down - am I right in thinking that, unlike all the other games so far, the credits you bung in before starting the game give you extra lives?

Sorry about that.....

I wasn't aware of this. Thanks for letting me know as normally I hammer the insert credit button a few times before I start.

It caught me out too.
The first few games were single credit ones, then I mashed "Insert coin" repeatedly, started a game and then wondered what I'd done to get several extra lives by the end of Stage 1. :belm:

Yes.

We're using the 3 lives (20p) play.

Although my recollection is that back in the day most people opted for the 9 lives (50p) option. I always did. The cabinets had 2 coin slots for both options (or at least the sit down ones did).

Did anyone tried to play this with an analogue stick, like with the x360 pad? I suppose that's how the game is meant to be played.

Slight improvement by concentrating on not doubling back.

Does using an analogue stick stop him from snapping back to the middle?

If you release the stick he still snaps back but you can hold it in place part way across the screen.

Sorry I missed out on Flying Shark last week, busyness got in te way a bit but also I forgot to post the meager score I could manage :belm:

This ones a lot better IMO, I like a bit of insanity in a game :)

First chance I've had to play this week. I think I lost lives trying to fly above the weird mushrooms/trees on the third level. They can still clip your feet, I'm guessing...

Ed: hmm, not really. Maybe it was something else.
