Died on Razor Claw this time. I know I can beat him on 1 life and I know I can get to him on 1 life. All I need to do is combine those and I'll be happy.

Give Punisher a go - it's a very similar mechanic but more varied and a bit easier.

Will do.......I do like having my mind changed / discovering something new. Like I said, I didn't like AvP at all at the beginning, but there's more to it than I first thought.

Am I doing something wrong? I reached Razor Claw a couple of times (and lost), but the score was always around the 300K mark.

I did get past him, but lost a life at that point. My previous post wasn't all that clear.

No problem - if it's any consolation, that post was crystal clear...

I think I can do better at this, but as the next score up is almost double mine, a week probably won't be enough.

Great game, I used to love these Capcom beat-em-ups, although to say that they're 'all a bit similar' would be understatement of the century.

Will probably have another crack at this before this week's deadline, I kind of chucked it away a bit at the end.

Hmmm, both you and Vision are looking beatable :)

Can I just ask zaphod, have you done some sort of personalised compile of MAME or something, 'cause it launches to the five games on the BEEX challenge automatically and is all very clever.

I believe it's midnight on Sunday, so you've got a fair wedge of time to go yet.

Correct - Midnight Sunday (or 00:01 on Monday)

On previous challenges I set things up so that it only displayed the installed games then messed around with filters to only show the romsets we were playing however for this one I started with the version of MAME that was recently released on the iPad and it handled the filtering automatically

Still over another day to go :-)

My best when we played this in the Retroleague was over 1,300,000 (managed to do the queen after a lot of practice) but i dont expect to get that close this week

Well it's an improvement, but I fucked up and lost a life on Razorclaws when I really shouldn't have.

I reckon that zero lives lost at a Razorclaws kill is the key to a good score.

Any reason not to use the Hunter? I like his laser blast. Recharges quickly enough that you can use it pretty much every 2-3 seconds, if you're careful not to mash the button and overheat it...

There's a 10-second supergun power-up in the boxes at the back of Razor Claws' room...

Furthest I've got - the barrels were being really kind until I got right up close to the queen (I think - she kept chatting about her anyway), broke a barrell and ten or so chest-bursters jumped on me and I died.

The woman is clearly the best - once you beat them off the screen she can just pound away at the edge and they can't get back.

[edit]Score retracted because I'm a belmer :)

Nice try MrC.

I'm gonna have a crack this afternoon, the family will be up at the in-laws so I'll crack a few beers open and get an alcoholic beat-em-up rage vibe going on.

I hope you’re not accusing me of underhand tactics.

Anyway, if I were you I’d leave those beers unopened and get in the car– I read that there’s a fruit machine fair in Inverness this evening. All the machines are on free play and you get to keep any winnings you make…..they close at midnight apparently.

Flight booked to Glasgow, I'll take a hire car the rest of the way.

You'd better not be fibbing about this MrC.

TRUE STORY.

So I'm on a fucking roll, Razorclaw is down, no lives lost, it's looking like a good one as I storm through the third level shooting the slimy alien fuck out of everything.

DISASTER STRIKES - family come home a bit earlier than usual, father-in-law walks in to say hello, AE Jnr runs up to give me a hug, clearly I'm ALREADY DISTRACTED and lose a life, and duty bound to then pause the game to say hello to everyone.

After the unpause it all went to shit and I finished off at 710K, which is actually worse than my previous best.

It's lucky for my family that beatings are generally frowned upon these days.

Yeah, if you beat the second boss without losing a life to him, you'll be set up for most of stage 4. (Unless you mess up the shooting stage!)

This time, he got me. :(

I got 80k last night but missed taking a picture cause the frigging scoreboard almost immediately scrolls down. I had a credit in so it wouldn't get off the start screen. I tried resetting but the sodding scoreboard had been wiped!

True story right there.

YOG's right though. You get a clear run to razor and you're set up for a 70+ score. I'll get a picture of a kick ass score if it kills me. I'm liking the baby pred best: you get aliens either side and you get a jumping kick that bounces from head to head/side to side.

Ah, you will! I don't think breaking 1 million is out of anyone's reach, really (in that if you can beat Razor Claws, you can probably get through stage 4). I died on an easy part, due to tipsiness. :p

I FUCKING GIVE UP.

Killed Razorclaw with no lives lost, and still fucking fucked it up and finished with less than my previous high score.

I swear this game has adaptive difficulty, whereby the better you're doing, the more handy it makes the enemies with being able to fucking hit you.

Reached the stage 4 boss (Queen) that time, but only had a sliver of life left and got leathered immediately. Also, maybe I just wasn't playing as well, but I could swear Linn is better for scoring than the others. My last score was from near the start of stage 4, but I was almost at the end before I matched it with the Hunter...

They're bastards, but (as you've probably noticed) they do a little drunken wobble before they charge, and their charge doesn't home in on you very well, so as long as you move away from them you should be fine. :)
