Jesus, whoever designed that flyer must have thought it was a sequel to Child's Play.

A tenner and two bags of Wotsits says that score will be bottom by the end of the week.

I did notice that.......anyway, the bet still stands (you can scrap the tenner if you like, it's the Wotsits I'm after as we can't get them over here and I had a craving).

So what do I owe you? I'm not sure what the current exchange rate is for two bags of Wotsits, but it's probably in the ballpark of one and a half cold bratwurst :)

I think exactly 363 question marks would do it.

That's actually not a bad comparison.

The line you draw around the dots "upgrades" them to fruit with increasing values. (cherries, pumpkins or something, lemons and pineapples).

What you want to be doing is killing multiple baddies using the logs (you can either push the logs from behind or run underneath them and kick out their support).

When you kill a baddie with your ball you get more points if the ball bounces off a wall or two first.

You need to collect all the EXTRA letters to get an extra life, but I wouldn't bother as the game gives you plenty of lives to start with.

I'm not really 'getting' this game.

Are you guys going for maximum points harvesting (getting all the fruit fully evolved on a level before collecting it), or just piling through the levels as quick as possible?

The fruit are pretty irrelevant for points - killing monsters gets you far more. The main point of levelling them up is so it takes less of them to collect to get a new shot.

Horrible game, don't like it at all.

I mean, really, all of MAME to choose from and we end up playing this?*

Next please!

* No offence to zaphod, as ever I truly appreciate the effort you put into these challenges, but we could have had Vapor Trail instead of this!

Feel free to blame me instead, it was my nomination after all. :) Then again, it was a democratic process – we all got to nominate as many games as we liked, then Zaphod made the choices.

I hated AvP initially, but I stuck with it for the sake of the tourney. Part of the fun is playing games you don’t know/wouldn’t normally like.

I still think Run Run is a charming little game, perfectly suited to a high-score challenge. To be fair, it does have some extra nostalgia value for me as I played the real thing back in the late 14th century. I wouldn’t want to play it for hours, but that applies to plenty of things on MAME. Each to his own and all that.

While we're moaning about the choices, didn't we do Space Harrier last time? :p

(Flicky is fucking brilliant, BTW. Roll on Monday!)

I certainly wasn't moaning - I got into AvP eventually and had some fun with it in the end.

But it isn't Monday yet, so you're all stuck with this one for the time being. The only thing that annoys me about Do Run Run is Dr Z's score.....I was certain I'd be getting 10 points on my own nomination.

It probably won't help if I say that I'd not played it before, and I've been working away this week so haven't had much time to play.

Sorry.

Flying shark I'm pretty confident with, but I've not seen flicky before and don't like space harrier.

It was an Analog stick in the arcade wasn't it?
That could definitely make it tricky on keys.

It's odd. I played Mr Do! quite a lot, both at the time and on MAME, but never got round to trying any of the sequels despite them being from "my" era of arcade gaming.

That was the nostagia thing for me - we had a Do Run Run machine at the student union among many others and a whole row of pinball machines. Our hall of residence at one time or another had Xevious, Star Wars, Gauntlet, Robotron and probably a fair few more I can't remember. Anything on MAME that you played in the "old days" has that nostalgia bonus.

There wasn't anything Retro in my student union - we had things like R-Type Leo, Sunset Riders, Punisher, Daytona USA and so on.

Take note :

R-Type Leo - 1992 http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=9221 (21 years ago)
Sunset Riders - 1991 http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=9861 (22 years ago)
Punisher - 1993 http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=9156 (20 years ago)
Daytona USA - 1994 http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=7530 (19 years ago)

They are all Retro now !!

Do! Run Run is a good game for a score challenge so just ignore AE's whinges
And I've played all the games chosen with keys and they are all perfectly playable so although you will probably do better if you have a stick its not a reason to give up (for Space Harrier you only need the 4 directions and a fire button and a lot of your time is spent moving around in a square while shooting)

Little known BeeX fact - YOG was a child prodigy and graduated at the tender age of nine and three quarters. For him, GTA 4 qualifies as retro....

Nah, I have pretty much the same view of what's "old-school" as most people here. Even though I more or less grew up on the NES, I find the internet's obsession with it as a sort of Holy Grail of classic gaming endlessly amusing/exasperating...

It's funny because both of those things actually need doing. :'(

Legitimate concerns!

I'll have another go at Mr Do's Got The Runs before the deadline, to celebrate the weekend.

Personally I thought the original Mr Do was a much better game.

I need some drugs, that's what saw me through the Space Invaders week on the BEEX MAME sh'mup challenge.

Fuck. I went to university in 2006 and would have killed for an R-Type Leo cabinet in the union. :DD

The selection of games at Lancaster Uni when I was there (1992) was truly epic. Pinballs such as Terminator 2, Getaway and Taxi could be found across the campus. (The Terminator 2 table was brand new and you often had to queue for that one at peak times, which is why skipping lectures and/or getting there early in the morning was a good idea.)

Video games were in plentiful supply as well, in particular I completely mastered Turbo Out Run because that was in my house's Uni Bar. (And a Konami shoot 'em up, that embarrassingly I can't remember the name of, even though I can picture it in my head.)

Next year I was at Manchester Uni, and they had fruit machines in their Uni Bars, which Lancaster Uni didn't. So that was fucking that.
