Then phone in sick if he still refuses.

This would probably be my tactic, too.

Spend the Tuesday occasionally grumbling about your tooth and make a request around the office if anyone has painkillers whilst he is in earshot as your tooth is unbearably bad.

Then say you NEED that dentist appointment.

As I am still playing nicely, threaten to tie him to a chair and hit him with the battery pack from a cordless drill until he accedes to your request.

Or just go to the dentist. I'm your dentist. Have him call me. Actually, I'm the dentists receptionist, Mr Afterthought. I used to be an archeologist, you know.

Problem solved. I told my manager that I was also waiting for an important phone call that could take a while, so would he be cool if I buggered off out to the car for it?

He told me that was absolutely fine, and then told me not to bullshit him in future. Fair enough I guess.

Ahh, Staff Councils. Three months of meandering and pointless meetings before it slowly peters out, having suggested a "Company Newsletter", a trip bowling and Dress Down Fridays, none of which have taken place.

Yep. I'm lucky in that I can book appointments with imaginary clients for interviews... I just need to get some interviews now.

This whole situation made me realise that I haven't actually read the Anne Frank diaries, so I now have it on my Kindle.

Now obviously i'm well aware of her diaries, but I was never made to read them at school, as a lot of people were. I've never felt the need to read them, thinking they were a "worthy" read, powerful due to the story behind them and the situation.

Blimey, how wrong was I so far! She was a very gifted author indeed, they are astonishingly well written for a girl of her age.
It seems wrong to say that I am enjoying it though, due to the subject matter. I guess enthralled would be a better word.

Explosion in the Boston marathon:

Wall Street Journal ‏@WSJ
Breaking: Two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon result in injuries, according to the AP

Looks like the explosion occurred in a crowded section at the finish line.

Pop to a biology lab, and look for the thing they use to affix seals to 96 well PCR plates. This is a like a scraper which you roll over, and it could push all the bubbles away. Or, use a thin roller.

That's not the problem. The problem is that if anything bigger than a fucking molecule should come to rest on the screen or the screen protector in the two seconds between peeling off the backing and putting it on then it will cause a bubble that you can't get rid of. These bubbles might be invisible once the screen is on and so arguably irrelevant but it's still quite upsetting.

I've never understood screen protectors; why buy a device with a nice screen only to stick a layer of plastic and glue over the top? If you're worried about protecting the device itself buy a decent case, but what's the benefit of plastic-wrapping the screen itself? Unless you've got especially sharp fingers or you're using a bit of rock instead of stylus or something.

Certainly for most things I don't bother but it's all a compromise, either have a case that you have to open or take the thing out of or else go for one where you don't but the screen is exposed and possible jangling about with change and car keys etc. After using the former with my last phone with this phone, I've gone for the latter and got one of these type:

I'm well pleased with it and was just making light of a minor frustration.

I've just got a new one for my iThing5.

I got through 2 on my iThing 4. Both survived phone destroying events but bot lost the bottom bit of plastic.

The plastic covers the bundle with them *never* go on cleanly.

Ever heard of a "sacrificial part"? The phone *would* have been destroyed. It wasn't, the case took the brunt.

I dropped an Aga door onto the phone. The phone was unscathed but the bottom of the case smashed off. The other case got chipped when it fell off my car roof onto concrete.

The Aga door would have certainly smashed the phone, no question. From the car roof it would have just been some bad scratches.

Fair enough. Speaking only for myself having a nice, bright, good looking screen is one of the main reasons to have a modern smart phone so putting something on top of that is the last thing I'd do. Mind you, I don't bother with a case at all and just rely on good pocket discipline so I'm possibly the last person to listen to on such matters. It's all compromise as you say. :)

Yes, that makes total sense. It's just when you said that the cases survived phone-destroying events I took it to mean that the cases had survived but the phones hadn't.

If it weren't for the two tiny bubbles then I honestly couldn't tell if it was there or not. I think they probably vary in quality and thickness.

Siblings are the key. Someone had put a name up which rang a bell so I did a look see on twitter and then looked at followers. That is not stalking, is it?
Also, how do I clean cache on my phone?

Heh. Will tell a story next time I see you. Not a terribly interesting one, mind, but in 1998 the cool kids went camping in buxton. Brought a lovely smile to my face did that memory.however I doubt I would know all of you had it all played out. So, swings and roundabouts.

Despite the fact our customer facing stuff hangs off DirectGov I haven't looked at it for ages; good to see you've got rid of the fucking Easyjet branding. :p

In fact I didn't realise DirectGov had been superseded, is that a recent thing? Our very recently redseigned relaunched (i.e. two weeks ago!) register and login pages still have a DirectGov banner, should we be removing it to keep up with the cool kids?

Recent-ish, the move for all government content to gov.uk started around 6 months ago, but there are still a lot of agencies that need to move over. Directgov is dead though, never to return.

I actually like gov.uk in format terms, but the level of reduced information from the predecessors (i.e. Treasury) is much disappoint.

Yeah, so we didn't just win the digital category, we won the whole thing :D
We beat the bloody Olympic Cauldron FFS!
