Isn't it the case that if you buy it from a US site for delivery to the UK, you're generally not paying any sales tax at source?

This.

Only an idiot would order $80 of stuff without splitting it into two orders.

Oh, Mr Chris. Gotcha.

Being forced to listen to the extremely loud office bore tell the entire room via the poor soul next to him about how he proudly publicly berated his 15 year old step daughter yesterday, by telling her off about how Facebook is not a communications tool, and how he lectured her thus in front of her mates.

Wish the weekend would come and swallow me up

Had the same thing when I ordered some t-shirts the other week from the colonies. I don't mind paying the VAT or the import tax. I just didn't understand why it cost Royal Mail £8 to hold it in the same depot where all my other parcels end up anyway.

They do a bit more than hold it, they fill in all the customs forms for you.

It's very annoying though, and getting them to put gift on the package doesn't make much difference, if customs believe it isn't a gift they will charge you duty on what they think it is worth. There is no appeal process.

Ha ha. I've never bought stuff from overseas before.

Anyway, given the postage value it would have worked out as nearly the same cost overall anyway. SO HA.

Anyway, the more important point here is the gubmint STEALING MY MONEY.

It always entertains me to picture the scene at HM Customs when my Proton Pack arrived and they started scratching their heads about how the fuck they were going to calculate the import duty on it.

There's a special nerd tax.

We had fun trying to get a shipment of fake weapons (from fillums, mostly) into the US for an exhibition at a museum.

Seriosusly the fuck graunaid?? None of them are even remotely clever, funny or anything.

In fact, "Fuck off you red nosed cunt!" is the punchline i was expecting at number five, and the story to go with it.

In fairness, she gets an absolute slating by basically everyone BTL.

She's also the fuckwit who went on massive rants about transgender people being weird and unnatural and bad, whilst complaining that their actions were sexist, and being discriminatory is bad.

I think you're thinking of Julie Burchill, but Bindel and Burchill are both anti-transgender and both man-hating weirdoes. And completely fucking tedious. I genuinely don't understand why the Graun pays them money. Do they really think there's an audience for this wank?*

*Then again the same could be said of the whole Graun, these days.

I thought Bindel did the article, and then when she was rightly castigated, Burchill wrote one saying 'Stop being nasty to my friend! Discrimination against women is wrong, but against transgendered people is fine because they aren't women'.

No, Suzanne Moore made a comment about transgendered people in an article in the Graun, then said various ill-tempered things on Twitter like "go and chop your bloody dicks off and be more feminist than me then" when someone on Twitter picked her up on her original fairly minor PC-crime reference to Brazilian transsexuals. Burchill then jumped in to defend her mate Suzanne with an astonishingly unpleasant tirade against trans people in general.

Burchill's article then got pulled and the Graun apologised for it.

I hate that I know all this.

It is like a soap opera for the chattering classes, isn't it? I mean, these people HAVE to be characters now. It has gone too far. I can't take them seriously at all as they are too far from any standard deviation from the norm.

Aha, that was it.

Bindel's wiki page does list that she hates trans people anyway, and has written articles on it, so that's where I was getting confused.

I mentioned this in the Yay! thread but I'm mentioning it here too as I need some advice...

Picture the scene: you've made it through the 1st stage of the interview process for a job you very much hope to get. The first was a face-to-face jobbie and you've obviously made a decent impression.

Now you've been invited to a 2nd interview with the first interviewer's boss, only this person works in Europe and thus wants to conduct the interview over Skype.

Do you:
a) try to book the day off as annual leave / throw a sickie so you can take the Skype call from home?

or

b) go to work as normal and try to arrange the Skype call for your lunch break, and take it from the car?

Technical issues are totally notwithstanding - I've got as good an internet connection to my phone at work as I do at home.

Personally, I'd take the day off, have the interview in the morning and then have super fun times for the rest of the day.
