Rather splendid empire quiz on video game music

http://www.empireonline.com/features/retro-video-game-music-quiz/

Reminds me of making my parents listen to the Swiv and Silkworm theme tunes I'd recorded onto tape while we decorated the xmas tree when I was 8. Poor sods.

This can fuck right off. Doesn't even contain the single greatest game music ever.

Can barely believe that's real.

Must confess I've not tackled the quiz in earnest yet, waiting for a spot of lunch first.

:D

Should I be worried how well I know that song despite not owning the game?

Didn't enjoy that at all. Fussy way to enter your guess (e.g just Sonic 1 wouldn't do) + loads of generic console games that I never gave 2 hoots about. + no 8 bit tunes. To talk about computer game music and make no mention of SID is a crime.

Aside from Fantasy World Dizzy, does any other game shout its name at you upon loading?

If they rename it to "V8 return to base Immediately" instead of "The Last V8" then that one :-)

And I think Chimera did ?

Most of the Resident Evil games seem to announce its title on the main screen. Not really shouting though.

Generally for those ones having a voice in it was something special and was up front simply because of the amount of memory involved.

I cant remember if the arcade game Sinistar said it by itself - all I seem to remember from the arcade machine was "I HUNGER"

Gorf 'announced itself' but it was something like "I am a gorfinsomething - Insert Coin - HA HA HA HA HA HA ... space cAAdet"

On the C64

"Ghost busters" with the follow the bouncing logo for the song - but you could never get back there once you started the actual game (i assume it dumped all that stuff when you hit the start button)

Hard 14 is a C64 tune.

And that was absolutely amazing back then, along with the "Kung Fu Fighting" demo which was basically a few seconds of sampled music that looped round.

Exciting times!

I think you may be mixing 14 up with 13 and I also think thats the Amiga rather than C64 version (there are quite a few Amiga tunes in there)

There *are* some 8-bits but they are from the NES

CPC Super Robin Hood had more speech than just the game opening. It spoke again when you started playing and every time you collected a heart and if you got a high score. And all in a standard 64k game.

The game intro speech would also alternate between different words. So it may say "Enter Robin Hood...... Good luck" or "Enter..... Good luck Robin Hood".

Easy 7 is 'Tristram' from Diablo, but it only accepts 'Diablo 2' (which also features the tune, but it's still weird)... :p

Adding to Zaphod's list, Medium 13 is Baldur's Gate 2.

Hard:
4. Strider
10. Killer Instinct

Your right - and one of my favorite arcade games of all time but something that even now you cant play well in MAME because of the custom controller.

If anyone else like it then the recent Midway collection (on the 360 / PS3) has quite a good version of it which works with the left thumbstick
