I do enjoy the enthusiasm you imbue in this stuff. At times I also thought I was watching Stuart Maconie play God of War.

With a side order of "the one with the better exclusives."

Microsoft has done a lot of good stuff with the Xbox for a couple of years, but it's a long way from pulling either of those factors into its favour.

I think the 'pick the one your friends are on' is pretty much a given so I didn't go into that, and focused on which is the better bet for games. (Exclusives obviously being a major factor in that.)

Also back-compat got a mention but I didn't see it as a critical factor.

It's quite easy for me to be enthusiastic about videogames as they are one of my absolute favourite things to spend time on.

I wish I was retired then I could just play videogames all the time.

After their shitshow of a start with all the consumer-hostile bullshit the Xbox is now a very good platform with it's backwards compatibility and all that jazz. It's the games that matter though as you say and there's still not a single thing on the Xbox that would make me even consider buying one. Whereas last time around I was convinced relatively early on that it was worth owning both consoles to get access to their exclusives. I'm genuinely baffled by how this situation has arisen, what in the fuck are Microsoft doing?

Uh oh. When watching the Netflix or playing a game the screen will flicker off and on every so often. Has anyone else had this? Cables are in fine and I cannot think of anything else. Googling doesn't seem to help. How long until PS5?

Have you tried swapping to a different HDMI input on the TV? I had some weirdness on mine where for some reason one of the inputs started messing up and every time I switched the PS4 on I would have to reboot the telly before it would see it properly.

Yes. I swapped HDMI cables and all was fine. Whether it was due to the new cable being shorter or something else, I don't know.

Black flickers like that are usually the HDMI doing the copy protection handshake again, which usually comes down to a dodgy connection. Re-seat the cable at both ends. If that doesn’t help, try another cable. It’s more likely to be the cable than the PS4 or TV.

Sounds like you need a more expensive cable!

But, you should buy a new tv just in case.

pro tip:
start with the component furthest from the floor, replace it and then replace the next highest etc. when you reach the floor, the problem will be fixed.

It was indeed the power switch.

In my (limited) defence, the TV had a (never used) power switch and a power button, and I had never seen the power switch before in my life.

Still, fun story.

This happened to my dad too. I gave him my old 26" LG and it had a physical power switch on the back, which was unusual as the flat screen TVs he'd had before didn't have them. He told me it didn't work and after some faffing around I remembered it!

I’ve started playing Celeste. It’s jolly difficult platforming fun. The pixel art is a bit too chunky to be likeable but the music and sound effects are lovely so it evens out.

I really want to play that. It sounds right up my alley.

Surprised you didn't get it on the Switch though. It'd be better suited imo.

My Switch stays attached to the telly 99% of the time so having Celeste portable isn’t really for me. I bet it looks nice on the small screen though. Mind you, I hate the Switch controllers and their stupid buttons too so using a DualShock is going to be preferable for me.

The game is lovely though.

The Switch Pro Controller is much nicer than a DS4. There, i said it.

Obviously I wouldn't recommend buying one just for Celeste.

Your PS4 in Review

Excellently, my most played game appears to be Pro Evo 2015. So I'm assuming it's a lifetime review, rather than 2018 in review.

I’ll be damned if I can make it embed on mobile but:

My first PS4 game was War Thunder apparently. I played about 10 minutes of this F2P rubbish.

I’ve played 2400-odd hours since release.

My rarest achievement was called ECHO which only 241 people have. No idea what game that’s for.

My longest played game is Rainbow Six: Siege where apparently I’ve got a staggering 294 hours locked in.

So there you go.

Is there anywhere you can see how long you've spent on other games? I'd like to know how long RDR2 took me for instance.
