I'm feeling a wee bit disappointed and hoped that somebody could help/advise. I had a nice little week of pattern sales last week, so decided to put all of the week's booty into getting myself an iPad, because they are fab for storing and using the pattern charts I draw up for testing.

Anyhoo, it's a really big treat for me, so I have been setting it up this afternoon but have hit a snag.

My iPhone uses Exchange to sync with gmail as it then supports push notifications. I like the iPad mail app as I only want three days of emails visible at once just to keep track of new ones.

But the rather big snag is that unlike with my phone (which works fine) I can't sync my emails via Exchange.

After some stress and much googling I seem to have found out that Google dropped support for Active Sync on 30th January, and so new devices can no longer set up gmail using Exchange.

This is quite a stumbling block for me as I like just having three days emails in the app, as well as the push notifications. The gmail Connectivity in the iPad app doesn't support push and the gmail app displays emails since the beginning of time and have to be hand archived :(

Does anyone know if there is either a way around it, or can anyone suggest a decent alternative to gmail which I can forward all of my gmail emails to and which will also a) work with the iPad app and b) supports push notifications rather than me have to set it to fetch/manually check?

Thanking you for any help/opinion/onion pinion/advice x

Ummm, I just put my gmail details into my iPad and chose push. No exchange interaction needed?

That doesn't work. The push setting only works for accounts that support push via the mail app. If you click on the 'push' selection it asks you what method you want to use for items that don't support push. Under gmail it gives you the option of Fetch, at the best frequency being 15 minute intervals, or manual.

Tested it just in case, definitely not pushing emails through.

Does an email sent to your ipad come through immediately using the gmail type account option? Based on testing here it will still only check every 15 mins at best.

I had one of those when it was still .Mac and you had to pay some extortionate amount for it. I got rid when I realised Google offered the same service but for free. However, I did think the Apple system was really good and naturally it's an ideal fit for an iOS device. If you've got no problem with getting a new email account, I'd have said you couldn't go too wrong with a .me account.

Edit: they support Push too, should've mentioned that!

No such thing as a .me account anymore, is there? It's all iCloud these days.
Sign up for iCloud, which I assume Mimi has already done as she'll need an Apple ID, and you get a cloud email address allocated for free.

Might be worth forwarding your gmail to your iCloud email address if you really need push :)
https://www.icloud.com/ log in there and you'll see your email account already up and running and ready to use.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of doing. My apple account is quite old so I can choose to send from either .me or .icloud

Thanks for the info!
