I've recently switched to Big Picture Mode in Steam because it works quite well while sat on the couch with a controller (although don't bother trying to search the store from it or you'll end up wanting to fucking hurt someone). I was just browsing my library of installed games for what to play having ditched Binary Domain* and I noticed that it flags up Tomb Raider Legend, Tomb Raider Anniversary and Arkham Asylum as "relying heavily on having a physical mouse and keyboard". I wondered what it was keying off of and a check of their relevant store pages does indeed have them all listed as only having partial controller support. Given that I played through all three of them on the Xbox the first time around how can they possible only have partial controller support? That's total nonsense.

*Gears of War style third person shooter by Sega of all people. It was alright but wasn't setting my world on fire and the bit I was at was annoying enough that I didn't really care to proceed with it. It had that Japanese thing where all the characters and dialogue are just slightly weird in an entertaining way but the gameplay was pretty bog standard.

I think it says that for games where some menus aren't mapped to the controller, and need you to use a mouse. Not sure if that's the case with those games or what.

I've found the PS4 pad pretty useful for instances like those recently, because you can use the touchpad to control the cursor. A bit fiddly, but less so than putting the controller down and grabbing a mouse. The only games it's been an issue for me in recently have been early access or similar, mind.

I don't remember using mouse or keyboard for any of those games, but maybe they are needed in the menus, like LewieP says.

They can only list them as full controller support if you don't have to touch a mouse or keyboard in any way.

For info the bit that killed it for me was where you were at a fuelling station and you had to wait for a robot to fill a fuel tank then drag it around the arena towards (I assume) a door that you wanted blow open. This was all done while a constant stream of robots were airdropped into the location so you had to fight them while also protecting/dragging the fuel tank around. Obviously the dragging of the fuel tank could only be done at a hilariously glacial pace and you couldn't shoot while doing it so within minutes of setting out you'd be near dead and the fucking robots would blow the tank up so you had to do the whole thing from scratch again. Except ever time round you've got less ammo because you couldn't replenish it from downed enemies quite as quickly as you needed to fire it into their stupid metal faces. After about the tenth shot at it I was more bored than annoyed but, thinking about it, it's like the perfect storm of horrible game design.

Haven't you just typed 'installed' into the search field there? Mine shows as empty if I do that even though I have loads of games installed.

A mate of mine at work has a Steam account and I was thinking of making him play the Portal games by gifting them to him, given that it's currently about £1.60 for the pair. You need to be friends with someone on Steam to gift shit to them though and I just cannot find his account. His user name is steve_richards and his account name is stevesie16 (or possibly the other way round) but the steve_richards that turns up in the search isn't him and there's no stevesie16 in the results at all. Does anyone know why someone's account might be so difficult to find? You can see your profile privacy setting so that only you can see it but that doesn't hide you from the search; it just means that when you try to click through to it you get a message saying it's been set to private so I don't think it's that.

You could send the gift by email rather than direct, which will automatically friend you too.

How do you do that? I tried to buy something as a gift and the only option available was to choose from existing Steam friends. I've got a feeling they've changed how it works.

Could you see her and just not gift to her; or could you not find her Steam profile at all though? Because it's the latter situation I'm in.

Latter. Once she bought something it worked fine.

Thinking about it, they did change the way gifts worked recently, although closing the ability to get new people onto steam readily seems a bit backwards.

Hmm, that might be it then as I think all my mate's bought so far was through Humble Bundles which won't count towards that total presumably. Good shout.

Fucking hell, the Steam sale must've been successful this year as my games are currently downloading at a whopping 35KBps. I put all seven new games on to download at about six this evening and only two of them had completed by the time I finished Firewatch ten minutes ago.

ETA: Huh, I restarted the Steam client just to check and now stuff's coming down at the usual ~4MBps. Oh well.

This is pretty cool if it works:

https://store.steampowered.com/together

Play your couch co-op games online with people using your PC or streaming device.

It's a good idea, but PC couch co-op is pretty rare, isn't it?

I've got an ubuntu laptop sat on my desk. Idle hands being what they are, the devil made me install Steam on it.

Turns out I can stream all my Steam games from home to this here laptop on my desk at work. Isn't the future brilliant?

Hello,

I don’t know anything about Steam (what it is, I mean) and I’ve googled but I’m not quite sure what it does, but a friend has recommended me this:

https://store.steampowered.com/curator/ ... 2599%25A5/

And I wondered if there was a way of working out which games were available on Switch. I think this is mostly for PC downloads, isn’t it? But some titles I think are also on Switch, but I can’t work out how to tell which are.

Steam is totally separate from the Switch store so the only way to find out which games are compatible is to go through them one by one on the Switch itself.

Ah, that’s a shame. I hoped there might be a handy site or similar that listed what platforms all games were on.

The Switch store is a bit painful to navigate, I feel, only being able to see a 6 or so games at once, and the way that a highlighted thumbnail instantly turns to video irritates me a bit.

That being said, I'm sure there are other lists available with a similar intent

eg https://www.nintendolife.com/guides/bes ... -on-switch .... although I'm not sure how wholesome the goose game [be a jerk to people] and Good job [smash things up] really are. They really are fun though, so I'd recommend.

I've succeeded in getting the non-Steam, PC version of OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast running on my Steam Deck, along with the Amiga version of Deluxe Galaga.

I'm now working on general emulation -- I've already got PSX and N64 emulation going, just looking at some Amiga emulation now. It seems to work OK, but is quite picky about the Kickstart ROMs it uses it seems.

Hnng.
Are you using Emudeck? That seems to be the recommended emulation setup tool (although I've not specifically looked at any Amiga stuff, so not sure how much of the legwork it does for you).

Yeah, have used EmuDeck to setup all the emulators — then it’s just a case of copying the Kickstart ROMs (and any other BIOSs, like the PS1 etc) into the folder, then the games themselves and running Steam Rom Manager to add the shortcuts to the Steam library (or you can just use EmulationStation a la the RetroPie)

EmuDeck does pretty much everything for you in terms of the setup, it’s pretty sweet.

The biggest problem I've seen with emulation on it is still anything with a keyboard as the on screen keyboard which works great within steamgames does not cope well with things outside of steam.

Emulation on stuff that just uses a controller runs pretty well and I'm surprised at (after the faff with shaders) how well PS3 runs on here

Some examples of console stuff is covered here :

I stand corrected, the PS3 section starts with over 5 minutes of him waiting for a game to load.

I just played some Super Mario Maker 2 on my SteamDeck, after spending approx. 3 hours in total getting various bits off my Switch to enable the emulation with Yuzu (and a decent chunk of that 3 hours was waiting for things to dump to the SD card etc.)

Quite amazing how versatile this thing is.

I know that this is like saying 'you should get a raspberry Pi' whenever emulation is mentioned, but couldn't you have just played it on your Switch for the same experience?
