You bastards. Leave her alone! She's now in a better place where you can't touch her. With Jimmy Savile.

I can’t take any pleasure in the death of any human being, not even Thatch, much as I despise pretty much everything she stood for. Like everyone else she’ll have been a bit more complicated than that, though, and her family and friends will be devastated.

But the legacy is very much alive and kicking today. At the risk of being a big softie I’d simply say that this wouldn’t be a bad moment to reflect for a few minutes and maybe, just maybe, (and this applies to me as well as anyone else) try to be less of a cunt to our fellow humans in the future. Being nice doesn't have to be a weakness.

Its a 'not really' state funeral, like the Queen Mother and Princess Di had, so no.

I imagine a whole flottila of young tories are breathing a great sigh of relief as they realise they don't have to be carted off to awkwardly receive benediction from her in an uncomfortable ceremony once having made their 'bones'.

As far as Thatcher goes in domestic politics, whilst I despise most of her decisions I can't hate her as she did what she felt was right - even if it did destroy the social fabric of this country. She was transparently destructive, unlike todays political leaders. On her support for murderers like Pinochet, however, I can add a handy feeling of dislike and contempt.

A nigh-irresistable Shakespeare quotation comes to mind, but I can't bring myself to type it.

There'll be a lot of partying at work going on though, especially in my department. It's my day off however, so I shan't be witness to it. Shame.

:this: Although i will add to that, that the country was totally fucked at the time. How would it have turned out if she hadn't done what she did? No idea, but she didn't destroy a perfect society in the slightest, it's quite possible that she made life a hell of a lot better for the majority, but who really knows what would have happened if she didn't step in.

Point. I really need to check out this 'Earth 2' these multiversers keep talking about. I didn't think it was perfect, btw, but it was a society. Societies tend to be good things. I like 'em.

Oh certainly. Heath and Wilson (the 1970s gritty reboot version) probably had the most disastrous administrations since the war, with the exception of Eden, but he was knifed for foreign policy disasters.
By the end of his time, Callaghan started some of the monetarist policies that would make Thatch famous, but Labour were dead in the water by then.

I'm not going to celebrate the death of the individual because they is crass and uncivilised – what I hate us what the individual did, and the long term negative socio-economic consequences of their actions. Issues not personalities, as an octogenarian radical left-winger used to say.

Yep. Why not capitalise on this fervour of 'revolution' and political activism and try to do something positive? Even get someone to record a protest song about the current government and how they carry her mantle. Wouldn't be hard and might actually make some people care. Just laughing and turning Thatcher into a ridiculous caricature so you can laugh that an elderly, senile grandmother is now dead just strikes me as pathetic and worthy of nothing but scorn.

If Hitler had just died there would be celebrations. And many people in Britain and Northern Ireland do actually consider Thatcher to be on par to Hitler or any other remorseless tyrant.

EDIT: note I'm stating the observation that some people are celebrating Thatcher's death as if she was a Hitler, not saying IMO that Thatcher was Hitler mk 2, important difference...
