Yeah, I think he probably was. Or someone who just likes to court controversy, which isn't much better. Great restaurant critic though.

The thing with AA Gill was to not take him seriously, I remember the kerfuffle about his IOM comments at the time and thought 'our' response was wildly out of proportion, the Chief Minister of the time spoke in parliament about it and suchlike.

My take on it was the guy came here and didn't like it very much, and didn't rate the restaurant he went to, and he had a bit of a rant about it, as he was wont to do about things he didn't like very much - end of story. No point dignifying it with too much of a response was my opinion.

His writing was good but he was deliberately provocative and a polemicist, so not worth getting overly excited about overall.

Though she spent her life delivering others' lines, Gabor could turn a memorable phrase herself.

Pondering her good relations with her many ex-husbands, she said: "I never hated a man enough to give his diamonds back."

She also commented: "I am a marvellous housekeeper: Every time I leave a man I keep his house."

Don't know a lot about her, but this sounds funny.

And in the original Moulin Rouge film, which I don't know but will probably watch at some point. Maybe.

A friend of mine had a bit of a thing for him and has seen Status Quo in concert a few times. She was gutted that he'd pulled out of a gig she'd got tickets for earlier in the year.

Still, at least it's her birthday today and nothing could spoil..oh.

For a further Brand 2016 kick in the teeth, I found out a week ago after watching the wonderful Miller's Crossing that Jon Polito had died September 1st, from cancer, aged 65. Polito was one of my favourite character actors, and a super reliable "Hey, it's that guy!" in many a TV show and film. Best known probably for his stints in Coen Bros. movies, playing such roles as incompetent private investigators and Chicago mob bosses, for me he will always be Steve Crosetti from Homicide: Life on the Street. Unjustly ditched at the end of season 2, Polito was there for a run of episodes that mark the greatest police procedural television ever made. His Crosetti, a moody, sometimes excitable blue collar policeman with an addiction to conspiracy theories felt far more real and vital than any number of modern day rote 'high-functioning' anti-social detectives. Paired with the great Clark Johnson as Meldrick Lewis, they made a fun, compelling team of pretty realistic homicide detectives.

His filmography is pretty chunky, but I also have a fondness for his small role in Seinfeld as his landlord Silvio. "I do not like Newman. He is an agitator!"

Looks like 2016 gave him the high-hat. RIP, 'Salami-brain'. :(

Liz Smith. I couldn't find many sources initially so I checked her wikipedia page and they listed her cause of death as 'diarrhoea', which has now been swiftly edited.

And to think she outlived Caroline Aherne.
