At this time, I'd tell him to avoid Windows 8.

Does he watch the films on it or just serve them to a TV? If he watches them, he's going to want a nice big high-res screen, isn't he?

Can you buy a new laptop with windows 7 these days, i'm completely out of touch.

He is completely non-techy, I think the 15" screen is what he is looking for, and I doubt he would notice resolution issues...

This Dell is priced about the same, but has a better screen: http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-17-37 ... redir=true

It's not as high-specced as the HP one, but if he really only wants it for browsing and spreadsheets I don't think he'd notice. Storage space might be an issue, depending on what format he watches the films in.

This seems pretty reasonable, £400 is the budget I think.

I've got a couple of Acers and they're solidly built little things, so that would be a good choice as far as I'm aware.

To be honest, his needs are so basic that pretty much anything would do him, so just pick something within his budget from a retailer you trust to avoid faff.

As long as it has a HDMI connection he could just get a HDMI Cable (which is what I use to watch filums when away in hotels or at home if the media streaming is not set up / working).

Possibly a bit late but here you go, £250 after the £30 cashback.

It's also sporting the newer Intel HD4000 integrated graphics which has a reasonable bit of gaming poke.

Running Windows 7 Premium 64-bit.
