I would expect no less. Only a cad and/or a bounder would not make it so.

After initially deciding I'd flog my Galaxy S3 to Mazuma and get a Nexus 4, my Proton Pack finally sold on eBay and I'm apparently getting a small amount of pay from my previous employer that I hadn't even realised I was owed. So I'm now really thinking about a new iPhone and jumping back on the iOS bandwagon.

Hmmm.

A sound decision.

However, if you do, please stop pleading poverty everywhere on the forum.

Ooo I can get an iPhone 5 at the end of this month, thought it was November when my contract ended.

Well get in quickly as they won't be available soon. You'll have the 5S and the 5C to choose from.

I've got a 4s already, DavPaz.

Is the 5C going to be any good? Better than the 4S? What about on comparison to the 5?

And if the 4S is now sticking around, are they making new ones? Coz Doc G advised not buying one as they were all old stock and their batteries would be wank.

As far as I know, the 5C is basically the 5 in a plastic case.

Faster, I think..

Not tempted, the price differential to get all the bells and whistles is not too bad. Which is the way they want it I suppose.

The 5c is very similar spec wise to the 5. It supports more LTE bands, if you fancy paying for a spendy tariff, and (as mentioned) has a colourful plastic chassis.

The 4S is still being manufactured (in 8 GB trim only) and all the 8 GB ones must be new because until this week only 16 GB models existed. I wouldn't recommend buying it though. On a two year contract it'll be a four year old phone by the time you're done with it.

Personally, I think 'in for a penny in for a pound' and if I were shopping for a new phone I'd get the 5s. The camera upgrades look fantastic. But I'll be happily sticking with my 5 for another year -- buying every new model of iPhone is a bit too profligate for me.

Ta. I am very short of pennies right now, because I am terrible with money.

However, since I'm terrible with money I'll likely get the 5S!

After half a decade of iPhone use, I'm opting out of iOS. End of an era. :(

I'll keep my 4 as a sorta iPod, though, if I can wifi it and stuff without a SIM in.

No, obviously. It was really just a bit of idle brain nonsense. The S3 does need to be replaced, because a phone with a battery that rarely wants to charge is a bit of a problem, but a Nexus 4 would be the sensible choice there.

I can get discounts on Apple products through work, though I'm not sure phones count. There is a mild chance I may get one as a work phone anyway.

I've voided the warranty by putting custom firmware on it. Not only that, but the problem is accidental damage - it got knocked off my desk at work whilst charging and it seems to have buggered the charging port. When you plug it in now, it shows as charging but doesn't - in fact if you use the phone at all it will actually discharge. Normally I have to power it down now and leave it charging overnight now to get it to charge fully.

The plan was simply to put the original Samsung firmware back on it, send it to Mazuma, hope it passes their checks, then get a Nexus 4. The difference in price would be £30, if I go for the 16GB N4. I'm sure, broke as I may be, that I can rustle up 30 quid to have a phone that doesn't drive me mental. It does seem to operate perfectly normally anyway if you don't spend too long looking at it.

I appreciate that this plan is somewhat immoral.

Also, don't you now have a large and obvious yellow exclamation mark on boot to show you've custom rommed it?

As my old Ipod Touch died after almost four years' loyal service, I treated myself to a shiny new 4th gen one. Cripes, I'd forgotten how long it took me to coerce both the Ipod and Itunes into loading the music and video I want onto the device. But, I still think it's my favourite gadget ever, and won my first game of 'Ticket to Ride' at around 2AM this morning when I couldn't sleep.

I don't think they care about custom ROMs. Worth checking their website, though.

Small, red exclamation mark in the top left of the screen whilst it POSTs. Sorting that out may be more problematic - putting a Samsung firmware on the phone seems simple, unrooting it and putting the stock recovery back on is giving me the right ol' ball-ache.

Should this all work out and I do end up getting a Nexus 4, I'll probably stick with the stock firmware as I'd probably trade off losing some of the features of CyanogenMod I use over a more stable phone. And there'd be no TouchWiz to contend with either.

So yeah, Apple stuff. I stabbed my finger on a scalpel whilst trying to pry the 'C' key off a MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid-2010 today. Does that make this post any more relevant?

2 things -

1) iOS7 is now available (at least on my iPad it is)
2) How do I access the storage of my iPad? Is there anyway to view the files? I can see the Photo's, but how do I see the rest?

You can't, welcome to iOS. :p

More constructively: iOS doesn't work like other operating systems in that you don't just have a chunk of storage space that you can put files into and then browse through. In iOS each application can only access the files it 'owns' so the files stored on your device are only accessible by using the app that owns a particular set of files to look at those files in isolation. There's no concept of something like Windows Explorer or OS X's Finder to let you just rummage around in the file system. There are very few exceptions (e.g. pictures you take can be accessed by Safari to upload them and whatnot) but these are rare; indeed the camera roll might actually be the only exception.

You can if you jailbreak it. As you said, files are "owned" by each application in that they are in a directory specific to that app, but if you log in as root you can just wander around and access them all anyway ;)

Presumably the jailbreak isn't yet ready for the iOS7 Cookie's running; making me the best kind of correct.

How safe is Jailbreaking? I did it to my iPod Touch 3ish years ago, and I remember there was the possibility of bricking it. Is that still likely to happen?

Before you do that, I'm sure I've got some software on my PC which allows me to view the files on my iPad. I used it to get some MAME roms on there and my iPad isn't jailbroken.

I'll find out what it's called when I get home and let you know.

It's always possible, but how likely it is I don't know as I'm an Android guy and have no idea what's involved or what other reasons there are not to jailbreak (I don't know if it stops any in-built Apple services working or whatever). You probably don't have a choice at the moment anyway as typically it takes them a while to get a jailbreak solution up and running whenever a new version of iOS comes out but it's certainly something you'd want to research a bit before going ahead with I'd have thought.

My iPhone is three years old, and that seems to be upgrading (sort of) fine. Are you sure that model is only three?

Firstly, I dislike ios7.

Secondly, how'd I delete music/albums/songs from my music? I used to be able to swipe and delete but that's suddenly gone somewhere. Any ideas?

In Safari, the auto hide navigational bar means I have to tap twice to use the back button now (once I visit a page and then scroll on it. )

It seems that stock for the iPhones is almost non-existent.
O2 aren't letting business customers order more than ten handsets and some variants were out of stock entirely at 8am when their phone lines opened.

Assuming this is a genuine concern, and I'm reading it right, Apple really are fucking assholes. People selling their stuff are too scared to simply report that there isn't enough stock to go round in launch week, which is pretty much par for the course for any popular product launch these days, in case Apple punish them by withholding stock when more becomes available. Christ on a bike.
