How long does that take?

3 days for the sculpting due to waiting for stuff to dry, another 3-4 hours painting.

+ 2 months to grow back the bits of beard that you got space marines super glued to.

I fell off the wagon big time today, and bought the GW foundation paints set and the washes set.

One of us. One of us. One of us.

The foundation paints are very good. They cover really well, even over black undercoat. (GW product in 'does what its supposed to' shocker). They're a good compliment to the more vivid normal paints. Not tried the washes yet, due to being a wuss, and not knowing how to use them. (When I was a lad, and started painting, no-one ever used inks, because they were fucking shit. They gave you a gloss finish. They stuck to where they weren't supposed to too much. And the fucking stuff didn't stay put. )

Everyone who's used the washes says they're brilliant though, so I'll have to bite the bullet eventually.

You can make your own washes using 10 parts water to one part paint mixing. That's all the new washes really are. I'm disappointed that they've stopped making chestnut ink, as it's invaluable in getting horn gradients and lovely slimey rot looks.

I don't want to sound like an arse Dimmers, because I love your work and think this one looks great, but he appears to be a bit 'shiny'. Have you used varnish or something on him?

I varnish them all using a spray "purity seal" he was still a bit wet when I took the photeys.

Purity seal - good for models and dad's with daughters going on their first date.

Dimmers, do you actually have a table that is pure white, or have you cut him out in photoshop and added in a shadow?

He looks great.

I have an L section of a white cardboard box, then jam the exposure up in photochop once I've took the pic.

The problem with using paint mixed thin for washes are twofold: 1: for some reason it dries gloss (don't ask me why)2: because its water based, and you're using water to thin it, it has the surface tension of water, which means it pools rather than spreads. Now, what really good painters used to do was use thinned paint with something called matte medium, which would sort out both these problems.

Apparently these washes are better than inks, self mixed washes or anything. Straight out the pot, bam! Sorted. Dries matte, spreads nicely, penetrating all the crevices. And doesn't wash away. Apparently. As I've said, I've not used them.

Hmm. I find the "badab black" a little too thin for my liking. It sometimes needs 2-3 applications to get the depth of colour I want.

You might not be putting enough on. As a guy at the GW store said the other day 'slap loads on, dont worry about putting too much on, they don't work like that'.

Oh, yeah. Nice mini! Though I wouldn't paint anything like that, because its not my style, sort of fing.

I was going to start on my War walker today, but I failed. Partly because I have no idea what colours to do it in, but mostly because I didn't get out of bed till 2pm today. I blame late night bezzieness.

So which one of you sexy lot were on the 'somewhere in Scotland' - Manchester Airport train yesterday then eh? I ask because I was on aforementioned train at approximately 14:20 when I spied someone reading a White Dwarf magazine type publication. Yes, in public. On a crowded train.

He did keep flicking back to his copy of Nuts (or some such lads mag) to look at topless pics of Jodie Marsh every 2 minutes though. He was trying not to be noticed in his obvious excitement but he kept touching himself in a fidgety way, drawing more attention to himself than he would've done if he'd had just got his cock out.

Not me, I was too busy picking up my NHS thick black plastic framed glasses from Specsavers and getting braces fitted.

Jodie Marsh? He was clearly just trying to get some inspiration for painting Orcs then.

Or add a little washing up liquid to the thinned mixture - a tip I picked up from an aircraft modelling site which solves the gloss and pooling problems. The gloss problem is also a problem with inks, which can be solved by adding a little of the paint colour to the ink.

I've just spent about £10 on one miniature for playing D+D. What the hell was I thinking?

Yep.

They aren't necessary, but sometimes its handy to use objects to sort out what's happening in large combats. If you're using objects, they might as well be more representative than bits of paper, no?

Maybe me and NurgleBeard can give you some tips? Lets face it, painting miniatures is glorified paint-by-numbers. Most of it is technique rather than artistic ability. Practice, advice, reading stuff online, in White Dwarf, and stuff like that is how I've got to my level.

Pundies top miniature painting tips.

1) Don't drink the paint. It won't harm you, but its far too expensive. Even if Sunburst yellow tastes nice!

2) Tape your miniatures to something before you begin the painting stage. I use an old paint pot for standard size bases, and the top off a coffee jar for 60mm monster bases. This helps you to not drop your carefully painted toy soldier. Also, it helps you to get in and around it, because you can happily hold it at any angle.

3) Always thin your paint before you use it. Put some on your palette and add water, this helps it to run easily off the brush, and stops it going crusty on your mini.

4) Limit your colour choices as much as possible. The War Walker I painted is basically three colours, brown, green and bone white. The tau is blue, yellow and silver. Three or four colours (not including flesh/ hair etc) looks a lot cleaner and nicer than 10 different colours on the mini.

5)Never try to copy real camouflage. It always looks horrible. (camouflage being designed to be indistinct, murky, breaking up the lines of the person wearing it. Exactly what you want on your prized mini) ) Simple two colour camo style stripes look a lot nicer.

Oh and also, it's better to be shit and know it, rather than thinking you're the dog's when you aren't. If you think you're awesome, you'll never improve.
