Most of the Etsy models are 3D printed. There's some amazing stuff on there by LordofThePrint which I'm slowly building a collection of. Currently assembling these.

Ah, I don’t know anything about 3D printing, I just wondered if it was something that could be done. I thought maybe Zardoz had a 3D printer once.

I was reading about people who painted miniatures a while ago, and it said that some people paint with black, then dry brush with grey, then again on the very outer areas with white to set all the shadows, then use a transparent pigment to paint the colours on to help show the detail. That sounded really clever.

I did have one but nowhere near the resolution you’d need for those detailed models.

Yep, Zenithal highlighting. It can work wonders with some models, but I find using black as the darkest shade too.... black. Very much easier with an airbrush.

I've got an Elegoo Mars 3 resin printer and that can do some funky stuff as long as you don't mind waiting 18 hours or so.

So with the higher resolution do you avoid all of those slight ridges that are (I guess) caused by the layers of filament?

I saw someone making a chess set with a 3D printer on YT and they flashed the finished pieces with a blow torch or heat gun (can’t remember which) to smooth them, but I guess that would ruin the high resolution. Even with the somewhat basic shapes he was using I think they looked a bit ‘melty’.

Resin printers are a little different, they print "upside down" by dipping the print into the magic fluid and using a UV led screen to make the resin go hard in specific places. There are rough edges if you use a magnifying glass (or have far better eyesight than me) but heating it up would kill any details like you said, so better suited for big smooth things, like the chess pieces there.

I’m familiar with resin usage with UV light to cure it on a very basic level, but it’s amazing that it can produce fine detail through dipping and curing tiny areas. I’m super impressed by that. What do you use it for? Is it for something in particular or just for fun things?

I printed out a replacement "shelf plug" for an IKEA cabinet the other day, does that count?

One of my favourite things people do with 3D printers is to fabricate little situation-specific home improvement projects. A little clip that holds tiny yeast packets inside a kitchen cabinet, or something that makes a light pull more easily reachable from a door entrance. Small things that wouldn’t be manufactured in mass, but help make things more accessible.

Right, finally finished off the second half of the box. I quite like the bomb collar dudes. Will paint ten red, ten blue, Oxford comma, and ten orange.

Got a dreadnought to build next, and will paint them all. Deadline is 9th June when the AdMech invade and 1,422 points of blood angels (and agents of the imperium) will defeat them.
